Megaservers are horrible for a community and cause more issues than anything else.
Minimalistic UI is ok if it is optional but not if its forced and ESO UI is kind of horrible for an mmo.
Freedom of choice sound nice but loosing any class identity and other negative effects of every skill for every player just sucks.
If minimalistic UI is the future then i won't be playing any new games. I'm so sick of articles like this talking this crap up. The only reason that new mmo's are doing this is because dev's think the player is to stupid and confused about so many hotbars.
I'm kinda thinking the opposite as in most players simply can not memorize their key's there for need a endless stream of hotbars/addons and what ever to push on screen.
I often try when possible to play with the most minimal UI i can find in most MMORPG in it's settings. Sometimes I even try playing in "screenshot mode" So that I am not bothered with all the out of game elements cluttering my screen so without that I can actually immerse myself into the game world.
There is really nothing confusing about having hotbars, it only stands in my way/view as a annoyance.
I for one would love seeing lesser UI in MMORPG's so in that I agree with OP.
As for mega server have mixed feelings. For one it's alway's easy to find other people though ESO had his fair share of issue's consurning finding your group members, overtime this started to work much much beter. But those who follow this trend in development might be able to improve on it even more. The downside atleast for me is it takes allot more time to be able to find like-minded gamers ingame where with server select you often choose a server due to it's info and where you are more likely to find likeminded gamers much quicker.
Really love ESO's freedom of choice, keeping in mind I mainly PVE ESO so I do not have to let my character be the flavour of the week. And min/maxing in PVE is kinda useless cause it would make the game pretty easy and renders the experiance as boring for me.
I LOVE Elder Scrolls, I LOVE mmorpg's.....so why can't I LOVE this game?!
ESO feels like a single player game set in the elder scrolls universe, but it does not feel like an Elder Scrolls game, nor does it feel like an MMO at all. It feels more like a Guild Wars hub type mulitplayer game than it doesan MMO. I hate the megaserver crap, which destroys any chance of community, and I hate the temp wars/scoreboard in the pvp that claims to be the 2nd coming of daoc.
^^This so much!
I got hooked on Elder scrolls from morrowind on PC then played it on X box. Then Oblivion, then Skyrim. I thought ESO was going to be the NEXT BIG STEP in the Elder Scrolls universe. Then I logged on...
I absolutely HATE world of warcraft. Played it for 3 years and the mundane plot and general shit stains they call their player base completely ruined it for me. Why bring this up you ask as you roll your eyes? Because that's what's happening to my beloved Elder Scrolls.
The lack of server commiunty, hell even the guilds are stupid and genuinely do not add anything to the game. The fact that there are three separate factions to choose, yet they don't add any type restrictions is the single most ridiculous notion of a MMO. In WoW at least the factions mean something. No open world PVP-seriously? I paid $80 to purchase this game, and continue to pay another $15 each month for the "precious" in game currency that buys you nothing useful either for the gameplay, or as a player save for a mount or potions, or a dumb ass costume for the character that due to the lack of community, can't show it off to friends anyway!
I wanted Skyrim I could play with friends, and I got what ESO is now. Shameful, Bethesda. Shameful.
You just sold me on going back - I just couldn't get the feel of it on my current lvl 30-something Nightblade after being away for months and really didnt want to start over after reinstalling it - but i kept it on my hdd and will start playing it tonight. Probably with a new Nightblade if i still cant regain the feel for my current one
I love it when people complain that ESO isn't the multiplayer Skyrim they wanted. Not everyone wanted multiplayer Skyrim...Skyrim is arguably the weakest of the ES titles. For someone to argue they played and loved all the ES titles, then say they wanted multiplayer Skyrim is interesting to say the least. Multiplayer Morrowind, yes...Skyrim, no thanks.
Very easily. It's the same reason a Christmas dinner at your office feels more familiar a community than going to a concert in Los Angeles. Or, if you prefer, why you'd feel more comfortable, say, attending a formal event with your fraternity brothers (or sorority sisters, if you're female) than you would attending said event with a bunch of random folks from a student body of 20,000. And, coincidentally, the same principle is why you'd feel more pressure to play nice at the office or fraternity event than you would at an event with random folks.
Originally posted by Thillian The same could be said about The Secret World, it has minimalistic UI, megaserver technology AND over 300 skills you choose from and combine in any way you like.
An extraordinary article just highlights the authors rather limited narrow view of the genre. Let's not forget Eve's single persistent universe (surely better than mega server) Guild Wars 1 rather splendid skill system and a whole bunch of other stuff that I am (and the author is) to lazy to recal.
Been playing since launch and will do so until something better comes around. Until then I see the population is still increasing in game which is easy to see when you go into the banks of any town. This game will diffenitlly spoil me from the cartoon MMO's. Its not perfect but keeps me entertained and they keep adding and improving as time goes by. For me EQ1 was perfect but that was for 1999. If they reworked that game with AOC or ESO graphics I would play that in a heart beat. It would be nice if the complainers would at least mention a game that is better instead of bashing a game that only cost you 60 bucks for life , sheesh cheap basturds. Like all games, everything gets better in time and their are tons of things to do before you ever PVP so just do that while they work on the PVP part of the game.

Agree, add some more depth to World PVP and optimise PVP performance and this game is delivering big time.

If they do the Imperial City properly in a Darkness Falls kind of way, that could do the trick... but then, they could screw it up

Ye im looking forward to that. In the balance of probability Mmorpg's tend to get more stable and mature with age rather than the opposite, so just need to be patient

I also want to point out that since almost all weapon skills, class skills, world skills, AVA skills, are available to a player and can be trained at the same time that the skill bar must be limited.
Think about it. You can't have a game where a player can learn 95% of the skills possibly available and not limit the given number that can be at use at one time.
This is not dumbing down for a console, it's forcing you to prioritize which abilities you want access to. Otherwise you would be insanely powerful. The limited bar is really part of your character build with the ability to swap and customize outside of combat for different situations.
Sorry, II have to completely disagree with your response. It most certainly is dumbing down of the UI so it can be played on a console. It is so obvious that I find it hard to believe anyone could believe otherwise.
Secondly, Eve has had a single server for 12 years. Certainly not a big deal.
Not bashing the game, just that a minimalist UI is a negative for most of us, not a positive.
Where do you get this decided majority from? Tens of millions of Oblivion and Skyrim users are apparently happy with a minimalist UI.
Yeah, no kidding! Hell, I used a mod or two in Skyrim for the explicit purpose of minimalizing my UI further. A lot of RPG players are trying to increase the immersion factor by running with fewer bells and whistles.
TSW has a megaserver, minimal UI and over 525 skills. With a better plot, better quests and the ability to actually group with people. Instead of ESO's broken system where you can not quest with friends in the open world unless they have never done that quest before. If they have they get phased out.
I agree with the article, ESO is not for the instant gratification player, it is not for the player that is used to being hand held from area to area, it is not a wow clone thank the maker.
I have played mmo's since the 90's and ESO is a good throw back to some older times in a lot of ways without having the harsh penalties which would never fly in the market today.
I have played all the Elder Scrolls single player games and I think ESO fits nicely in the Elder Scrolls family.
As a lover of all things Elder Scrolls, I have had a delightful experience with ESO, despite its flaws. I think we should admire the hard work people put in to make these kinds of games.
The "minimalist" UI is horrible. It might be nice for prancing about solo or taking screenshots, but actually playing with other people is impossible without addons. The incredibly clumsy weaponswap mechanic isn't helping, either.
The whole game is just completely halfassed.
A nice world, lot's of lore to discover....and then the Quest-NPCs don't even recognize the player's race.
Great battles between 3 factions, just like DAoC....which are all the bloody same, down to the castles. But hey, they even emulate the lagfests and zonecrashes from back then.
