I was looking at all the newer games and the best ones out and Daoc made me wanna play. How good is this game? How much stuff is there to do? Is there anything better? What are the downsides to this game?
Please give me your info on the game Thank You

I've been playing DAOC since the first week it came out which was fall 2001 and I'm still going strong almost 5 years later. It has the best pvp system available with the realm vs realm combat. You do need a decent computer though because the game is graphically demanding and like most games, you want to have that edge over you opponent when it comes to lag issues. (At times there are literally up to a hundred players involved in the same battle and certain ocassions, even more.)
I have also recently signed up for Eve online and have been enjoying playing both games at once. Eve has that relaxed atmosphere where you can devote time to an alternate game while you're mining or carrying out courier missions (an efficiency-freaks dream come true.)
All in all, I recommend DAOC to anyone that is pondering the possibility. There is a multitude of activities that will keep all kinds of players busy.
I came to DAOC the other month to try it out.
First thing i noticed was the tutorial was really crap and not new player friendly.
Second thing i noticed was that character movement is really poor and odd. Alot of people i know say this that only decided to play just recently.
Third thing wa sthe interface was horrible!
After 10 mins i got a bad feeling about the game and i quit. If a game doesn't draw me in then why should i carry on playing?

Don't click here...no2
I played for a total of probably a year or so, off and on over time.. I just tried the trial again about 2 hours ago.. honestly, the game is suffering from being out for so long. It doesn't attract enough new blood to keep it interesting for me. It feels old and dry, like a piece of hard crusty bread.
Don't get me wrong, I loved it in its earliest years.. but with any game, after awhile it just isn't palatable to newer players, for me at least.
I think that the imbalances in realm population greatly reduced the game's growth potential, along with some other mistakes along the way. (/level 20).... these combined to drain the life out of the game's possible growth. It was worth playing a few years ago, but now, not worth it.

Looking forward (cautiously) to: Age of Conan, Dark Solstice, Armada Online.
Will soon try: Guild Wars
Overall: Amazed and bewhildered at the current sad state of the artform of gaming.
Actually the realm populations are very well balanced. We asked and the margins are within 3-5% of each other across the board.
As to the game feeling 'old and dry'? How so? The graphics are top notch and received yet another update with the DR client. I just don't see how anyone who's actually tried the game can say the game feels 'old'. I will say that the fact that most of the player base on the *normal* servers is higher level does make new players on those servers feel a bit alone but on the classic servers (Gareth/Lamorak/Ector) that's simply not the case, especially on Gareth.
I will state that for people who really aren't into PVP they are better off with EQ2 because DAOC, while it has decent PVE, is first and foremost a PVP game. If you're into PVP though there's no fantasy MMO on the market that even comes close to it's quality.
There's a free trial. I suggest getting it and going to the DAOC forums here and reading the directions on getting the up to date graphics (you won't have the DR graphics updates but the Catacombs graphics are almost as good). If you don't like it you've lost nothing but the time it took you to download. But if you don't try it you could be missing out on a very solid game that you could wind up in love with.
I will state that the vast majority of people who have tried it recently have had positive comments about it. I know entire groups of friends who left SWG and WOW for DAOC have fallen in love with the game.
It's not for everyone. If you hate PVP you probably will prefer EQ2 or maybe even WoW. But if you enjoy PVP, even just a little, you'll likely love DAOC.

I'm speaking just in terms of the playerbase of the game.. when it first came out, it felt fresh, vibrant, and alive. There were players all around you of your level, and the chats were always buzzing.
I logged in today and didn't see a single line in the chat box over a period of about 45 minutes. I saw hardly any other players.. I felt like I was playing a single player game, but the game is at its essence designed to have 1500+ players per server at a time.
It feels devoid of life. This is what I meant.

I used to be a hardcore DAoC player, back before ToA. I left after ToA and have just now come back to give it another go.
The Catacombs expansion has made levelling pretty easy in the early levels, which is important to get you into Thidranki, the level 20-24 battleground. This isn't craptastic WoW style BG, this is the original sandbox, do what you want BG. Want to siege the central keep? Go for it. Want to roam around in a group and kill? Go for it. Want to roam solo and kill? Go for it. No time limits, no queues, just go in and scrap.
The game is a bit slower than newer MMO's, you run a bit slower, turn a bit slower, etc. Takes awhile to get into the flow.
It's definitely worth a shot. This is still the king of PvP. The big boys (end game) fight in WORLD PvP. Not instanced farming crap.
I just started DAoC about a month-and-a-half ago, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm not a PvPer by any stretch of the imagination (which is why I avoided the game for so long), but it turns out that the PvE stuff is quite entertaining. I agree with the criticism that the UI is a bit clunky and player movement seems reeaaally slow in the beginning, but many classes have speed improvement abilities, and everyone has access to mounts. The game did have a relatively steep learning curve with regard to figuring things out, but once you get used to all of the shift+click, alt+click stuff, it's fairly straightforward. I'm actually really impressed with the graphics upgrades they've made to the game. The Catacombs engine really was a major step forward, and they've continued to upgrade mob textures and environments within the base game and the various expansions; the upgraded city textures in Darkness Rising are very impressive, if a bit demanding on the system.
It's already been said a few times in this thread, but like every MMO that exists or ever existed, it's not for everyone. It does have a free trial, though, so it's not too difficult to find out if it's for you.
Now that I have played the game for a couple months I feel I can have an opinion.
PvE- Task Dungeon, Task Dungeon and then a few more. Ya sure there are quests if you decide to do them, but all that does is level you slower. Basically you either level up by doing countless task dungeons or by a power level.
PvP- On paper the RvR is amazing, but I find that in action it is much different.
Casters rule the day- I always prefer to play the melee/Tank characters and if you do to, you are in for a horrible surprise. Battles are fought long distance for 99% of the battle. If you try to rush in and do anything, prepare to be nuked to hell.
Zerg Zerg Zerg- Taking over a keep is really just a big mass of casters who do ranged combat for a long time until 1 side gets borred and leaves or until 1 side gets too many people for the other to compete with.
I first took up this game after hearing so many people praise the RvR. But I cannot see why they think it is so good. After doing some RvR in DAoC I actually (I never thought I would say this) want to play in some Battlegrounds in WoW again....
Thanks Guys/Girls for the replys i'll prolly end up given it a go. But about EVE is there alot to do? Free trial ? and witch of these needs more computer to run it?
its not he computer processer or ram i'm worried about its the video card. Bad thing is its a laptop so i dont know if you can buy new video cards for those i just got it and i dont know much about them. And the desktop that i'm on now couldnt handle it thats for sure.
Well my laptop has a Pentium M 1.6ghz / from what i read its as good as a p4 desktop computer. And the ram is 500 something like 520ram but the video card is a intel something so it sucks.
512 ram would make more sense. And your video card is most likely an integrated card. I would bet you could run EVE on very low to medium settings, its not a very demanding game.
yeah eve looks to spacey to me would my pc work on EQ2 or Doac WoW or Guild Wars those are all games i'm lookin at. Daoc and EQ2 looks the best so far.
Bump i wanna see the answers to the last one
Guild Wars - Rorick Aurlith E/Mo pumped up with the best armor and weapon, has all his skills, and runes. PvP King!
Dark Age of Camelot - Leaton 50 Vampiir - Lamorak - Guild: Magic and Mayhem!
I've played DAoC off and on since its release.
I started on the Bors server and moved to Nimue (role play) when that opened. Of course both of those belong to clusters now.
Currently have been playing on Gareth (classic) server and its one of the most populated. Sadly what I would have to say is this:
There are plenty of times that this server shows 2200+ (thats gareth where I play). If you could go into each realm and do a /who nf (shows you the non anon's in the rvr area) you would see close to 200 for all 3 sides. Yet there are hours sometimes even days where nothing seems to be happening.
The post saying its a casters game was pretty dead on. If you run into a high realm rank group you pretty much lose by default. They will have various "I win" buttons to ensure they win. Relatively you try and last long enough in the game to leach out enough realm ranks to get your own "I win" buttons.
The keep sieges really aren't so much something that last till one side gets bored. Its more like this:
One side will take a tower or open one to place trebs (siege weapon) behind it. They then try to treb a hole in the keep wall. Recently they mostly don't actually kill the tower lord because then the defenders just raze the tower. That allows them to use siege on your trebs and that is that.
If you are with a batch that decides to ram the door hope to have plenty of healers. There will be a lot of boiling oil dropping on you along with various other damage types.
The keep designs are totally fubar. When a keep is claimed and its level raised to be harder to take. what happens if the outside walls raise to a point that you have clear line of sight to the roof.
This means that if an enemy does manage to get inside your keep and you retreat to the inner. They will have your inner oil points and roof totally covered. Probably Hibernia has a bonus defending in this situation since their animists can just pour shrooms out the windows.
I cannot really give you a complete good the bad and ugly of the game. Or cover the imbalances that exist in it.
Once upon a time it was a very active and fun game. Now it pretty much is surf the zerg to survive. Perhaps after you get the realm ranks join a gank group. The siege warfare which should be fun is totally farked up due to poor implementation and horrid keep design.
The battle grounds are almost more fun than the final rvr product. The game population has dropped by 50 to 60 percent in the last year despite free trials and free time to people that quit to come back. Most people that do play and have been with the game long term... are only staying because there isn't another "comparable" pvp game for them to go to.
I know this sounds very negative and it is... I have been a long time subscriber (since release and was in beta). Its a typical MMO that had a lot of bad decisions from the creator (mythic) and continues to have poor implementation.
They have been trying to rebalance classes but really aren't making headway imho.
Anyway to cut it short here... There is the free trial you can't go wrong with that. The game being new to you may be worth trying but its hard to say that from my perspective.
As far as graphics go... with the catacombs or darkness rising expansions the graphics are relatively modern. The under water lighting and effects are the best I've seen. Other parts are not so good but it looks a lot better than it did before. (I mention the underwater effects because I like to use water potions and ambush people from the water ...).
Sorry for the ramble go ahead and try it but be prepared for what comes later. Just because you get to 50 doesn't open up the world of rvr when there is a ton of RR10 and up people on even the newest servers.
Thank you guys very much for the posts. I see some are for it and some think its crap lol.
I Prolly wont play because it seems to be nothing but PvP and i need a game with more things to keep me working and want'n to play. Do you know what top mmorpg that could fill these things.
1. Chars look and movement/skills are more important then the world to me.
2. Need some kinda Quests or crafting or something besides fighting other people.
3. The People in game are what makes the game. So i need one with a good deal of players that arent supers @$$es
So far you guys have given me more then enough info can you guys just pop a couple more idea's out at me with those 3 things in mind.
Thank You MMORPG lol
I played DaOC very recently and I did no PVP at all so dont let that put you off. All my time was spent doing quests and dungeons etc. Its a good game and the only reason im not playing is that im truly sick of the fantasy genre.
i just bought it, its kinda hard to find groups but its very easy to find a guild and make yourselves at home theres an /lfg function which ironically is looking for guild, not group, that allows ez pickup access. I havent tested rvr out yet which seems to be the best part of the game, my main focus is on leveling atm.
Oh yea thats the other reason I dont play, finding groups can be a right pain.

Erm... What guild are you in? The chat box only shows Alliance and Guild and Group chat. There are no global channels in DAOC. So odds are if your chat is devoid your guild is probably dead. Finding a new guild would help a lot. If you create a NEW character then I recommend Gareth or Lamorak because the newbie guild is best on those two servers since there are a LOT more new players on Gareth and Lamo than on the 'normal' servers.
Gareth and Lamo are just more newbie friendly due to multiple factors than the normal servers.
