Hey gang, I was just given the notification to reserve my download for windows 10. My pc has a pre installed recovery partition for Win 7, What would happen to that and will I able to recover after the update ?

If you recover you will still be windows 7, you would need to update to windows 10 again but it would still be free to do so.

I was so excited when I saw the little windows logo cause I thought that Windows 10 was available but alas we have to wait till the end of July or something.

    I can't stand Windows 7 and 8 any more. I need windows 10!

Why does one need to reserve something that essentially has an unlimited number available?

Its marketing, its free for the first year for Windows 7-8 users. They have also announced its their last OS and from here forward its just upgrades. My guess some time after they get a large % of people on it, we will see how they plan to make money. Seeing Office 365 have a monthly fee, my guess is some why they get money from us every year over waiting 1-3 years to get money for the next OS.

To actually answer your question that recovery partition should remain untouched and you should be able to recover after updating to Windows 10, but if you game a lot you really shouldn't want to.

Microsoft seem to be moving more towards a subscription model, somehow i think that what they did with Office 365, will somehow be incorporated into Windows 10, sure the operating system will be free for the first year, but, i have to wonder, will continued usage, particularly when it comes to upgrades/patches, require a subscription plan to do so, i think its something that we need to be keeping a weather eye on, because in my experience, Microsoft never gives anything away for free, unless there is a profit to it.image

Been an insider for months, the only real issues I've had are DSR not working and the PC not staying in sleep mode. Feels pretty stable, the UI is still a mess but it works fine.

Nothing is truely free ; )   anyway they already type in the reservation presentation, that some online services may require a fee, and some apps might be sold seperatly.

so the promise for the future is in the text. Personally just dont like that there now come one more place filled with "sale offers".

Those are some creepy thoughts. A free upgrade for the first year its OK, but i would not be OK if they start requiring a subscription to use some daily use features or even Windows altogether. I will be keeping a close eye here because if Windows usage becomes hindered by subscriptions its the end of gaming on Windows for many people, including me.

It's free because it gives millions of people who are now on Windows 7, access to the Microsoft app store, which will make MS money. It promotes their ecosystem, it will allow them to more quickly improve cortana, it promotes their Xbox platform and mobile platform. It will also promote their new Edge browser, which will allow them to get more people to use Bing and other Microsoft services.

Remember that most people did not upgrade Windows. Most people buy a PC and never change OS. Now that it's free, many more will upgrade and many more will be able to access the Microsoft store. Those people would have otherwise been people without access to Microsoft's services, which would result in a net loss, because Microsoft is required to update those older OS without any money from the app store, or their ecosystem.

Remember that it's not free for new users, it's only free for people who already have Windows 7 or 8. They are still going to make a profit from new PC. But by giving existing users free upgrades, they can leverage their app store / ecosystem / edge browser / cortana, something that would be impossible if everyone stayed with Windows 7.

Microsoft has never said they would use a subscription, they have never said they would charge extra for other services. I don't understand why people bring this up, it's not that hard to see why they are giving away the OS for free.

Could be a way to see how many are going to adopt 10 as well.  All those "reservations" let them know what the market is like going forward.

games running better / full compatibility with all my old stuff, faster loading times, windows edge (replacement for internet explorer) runs faster than firefox or chrome and with less memory leak issues...

i'm extremely happy with the upgrade and have had basically no issues except having to do a DDU driver wipe for my video card and reinstalling the drviers, other than that everything has worked straight out of the box and better than 7 / 8 / 8.1

I was gonna post to say it would take a major effort by Win 10 current users/testers to convince me to upgrade from Win 7. You did a good job here though.

Still not convinced cause I hated Win 8 altogether.

I have been testing windows 10 Since last year, its still buggy and a mess. Unless you have a PC you dont mind messing up, dont use it yet. Windows 8.1 is still the fastest and most stable OS they have made yet.

People seem to have latched onto the subscription rumour when it's not true. If you upgrade to 10 within the first year it is free for the life of the OS.

Microsoft license sales have been in decline for a long time now to the point that is not where they make their money anymore. Their profits now come from the app store and services like Skype. Think of it like Windows moving from a GW2 B2P model to their own F2P model where the cash shop is the revenue focus.

My only worry with it is i plan on upgrading to Intel's Skylake or AMD's Zen if it turns out any good, MS will may force a new Windows license purchase with the hardware change.

Well, I was at a backyard bbq about 10 years ago at the house of a director at Microsoft.  One of the other people I talked to was also a director at Microsoft who told me that they were kicking ideas about going subscription.  So this was not a regular Internet rumor.  Believe it or not, do what you will with it.

    Hmm

I would be willing to pay a modest subscription for Windows, that wouldn't bother me to be honest, with a model similar to most other software - you get all updates and upgrades while you are subbed, you only get critical upgrades (if that) if you drop the sub. I don't consider the price of Windows to be outrageous as it is, and the pricing they did for Office 365 subscription was in line with what they charged for the Office box license (sub was about 1/4 of the box price, with major releases typically coming every 3-4 years, so Cost of Use if you want o keep up with the latest version works out to be about the same if you use it full time, and less if you don't).

That being said - I can't count the number of times MS has said they are not moving to a subscription at this time with Windows. That the free Win10 promotion is not a bait and switch, and that the people who get the free copy have the same license as someone who buys it.

Regardless of whom you BBQed with however many years ago, this is what MS is saying right now:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/features

Yes, free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required; standard data rates apply. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Our lawyers made us say this:

Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own. Some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device and market. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. To check for compatibility and other important installation information, visit your device manufacturer’s website and the Windows 10 Specifications page.

1 Apps sold separately; availability may vary.

2 Cortana available in select global markets at launch; experience may vary by region and device.

3 Features only available in supported games in Xbox Live-supported countries, see xbox.com/live/countries. Limited number of games available in 2015 support cross-device play; additional games to follow. Stream to one device at a time; Streaming with multiplayer from Xbox One requires home network connection and Xbox Live Gold membership (sold separately); Gold also required for multiplayer play on Xbox One. DirectX 12 only available with supported games and graphics chips.

Please don't spread incorrect information, some people may actually believe you. Windows 10 is free for one year for all existing windows 7 and 8 users. If you upgrade during that 1 year period you get a free copy of windows 10 forever. Basically that's Microsoft way of encouraging users to upgrade. After that one year period is up, existing users will have to pay the standard windows price. New users will have to pay for windows 10 regardless as they are not eligible for the free upgrade offer.

i am thinking Microsoft want to get those windows 7 users to upgrade. People who are on eight are more willing to try new things and they are probably more open to new versions. Windows 7 users are probably like those windows xp users who used it for ages. In any case there will be a lot of features not coming to pre ten versions, for gamers the most notable mention is the new directx, so you either upgrade or have worse looking games.

That's the way I read it.  I'm waiting until they reveal all about this and probably until the last month of eligibility in about a year to make a decision.
