My Inquisitor went through far too much to secure their place within the Sith Empire to see it all wiped away at the whims of EA. My Trooper pulled every dirty little trick in the book to ensure that the Republic would survive, even though she had to drag the names of herself and Havoc Squad through the mud to do it. My Agent... well, you get the picture.
I don't want to be a 'rogue faction' against some new unknown threat that just casually wiped out both major players while I was stuck in carbonite or something for... some reason. That just sounds stupid and lazy, though both are in ample supply over at EA.
As for the CGI trailer... yeah it's cool I guess, but so was the trailer for the original game, and we all know how that turned out.
Maybe Vitiate had success with his plans to destroy the empire and the republic and this new threat of the eternal Empire have something to do with him. And you had to hide in carbonite to escape from the hands of Vitiate, Maybe.
We have to wait till october to find all those answers.

I think they'll still exist, they're just not what they used to be. (Kinda like the Jedi Order and the Republic in KOTOR II)
I imagine you'll be able to side with the Empire or Republic regardless of class now when going through the story content (which is probably where the whole talk about betrayal comes in).

Was mildly intrigued...until i read this..(source at Dulfy's website )......they are not continuing class stories...read that faq slowly and let it sink in....all your toons will be the class they are now, but you will wake (apparently frozen in carbonite) and thus your story "become's that of the Outlander"......So you and everyone else playing will be "Outlanders".....figures..EA hype.
8. Is the Outlander a new class in Star Wars: The Old Republic? No, Knights of the Fallen Empire keeps the 8 core classes, but your character’s story becomes that of the Outlander, a veteran of the Great Galactic War.

It does seem like there will be a lot more freedom in choices though, and how you go through it.
They're even letting you put together your own team of companions this time around instead of automatically getting a certain set based on your class.
And I imagine there will still be a personal touch now and then, depending on who you were before. (A class mission here and there à la SoR)

I think this is a good thing. As it stands, there are too many class stories that would need to be continued. The budget for voice work, for just 5 more levels of story, on that alone would be insane. Most of their absurd budget for the game development went to this. It's not cheap. They needed a way to funnel players, and their stories, into a much smaller scale. This works. I imagine content will come along at a much faster pace now.
So we get frozen in carbonite and when we wake up 10 years have passed and the factions are gone?
how the hell is that supposed to work, all old planets will have no more empire and republic?
and no fleets anymore?
this change is almost... cataclysmic
If I had to guess, I'd say they just plop you into "the future" at the point when you hit level 60 and choose to do the new content. The Galactic War will have happened, and the factions will still exist but will no longer be in open war; much like they were in the beginning of the game.
If it's not that long into the future, there's probably not much they'll have to change. The home worlds might look a little different. Places like Balmorra where there's constant fighting will be in a different state, or will no longer be accessible.
But keep in mind this doesn't have to have any effect on the level 1-50 story at all. 1-50 can happen exactly like it does, and you'll eventually become "the Outlander", after which point the worldscape might change.
Edit: It may be similar to Catacalysm, in that the whole world is changed for everybody throughout their progression... but it doesn't have to be. it could be changed only for those 60+ level people that started the new quests.

It doesn't have to be a "wake from carbonite/amnesia" kind of thing in order to be portrayed in the future. Storytelling doesn't have to be done in a linear chronological fashion, as shows like Lost, Arrow, and many others have shown. Some of the chapters may occur in the future, some may occur in the present, and others in the full out war, in no particular order.
Edit: Looks like carbonite is involved? I missed that bit. Still... doesn't need to be.

But still it will be involved. Imagine Wrath or Nox being frozen in carbonite...yeah right! Idk for which of those two it goes higher(the amount of stupidity involved).
Our characters aren't gods. They can be defeated (and frozen). Hopefully it will be handled well though.
I imagine there will be a lot of bruised egos among the players who are going "But Bioware, my character is frickin' indestructible!!! This can't stand!"
Even the vast majority of movie heroes get their asses handed to them at some point. (Whether they are Luke and Anakin Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi or a hero from a completely different movie series)

I know, but who or what managed to freeze Wrath I wonder. And if that happened, wouldn't the entire Empire be on Red Alert? Idk...this all sounds strange. I think I know what they are aiming for: KoTOR 2 feeling. I also have a nagging feeling they'll fail-why? They aren't Obsidian!
Still...we'll see. It may turn up nicely!
I'm curious to find out as well.
And nah, they wouldn't react any different to when a Dark Council member falls. It's established early on that the Wrath's pretty much on par with them in order of importance (something about him being free to do as he pleases, as long as it doesn't conflict with Dark Council interests).
And we all know how many Dark Council members have fallen over the course of the game. Yet despite this, everything kept going. That and I imagine they'll have their own worries to deal with.

Plus from this expansion onward, you are no longer Jedi Consular in the full meaning of the word(story, character, mechanics). Now you are a J.Cons only in the mechanics. And I don't remember anyone requesting such huge changes tbh(so much about their "players have asked and we have listened" crap). I don't remember anyone mentioning new story in the last year or so(as a "I want" feature), so from where did this come?
By that same sense of the word, Yoda was no longer a Jedi after the temple was razed in RotS; if that's what it means, then that's not such a bad thing, IMO.
We're still missing a crapton of details that we might not even get til beta. For all we know*, our characters were frozen willingly, or we were betrayed by our crew. Or we betrayed them and so they were forced to act. Hopefully we'll get to have some effect through our actions in how it goes down, as I'm not a big fan of arbitrary amnesia/timeline inactivity, both of which are a really obnoxious cliche in games and have been for years.
*I should say "for all I know" until I can find a vid of Hickman speaking as I didn't get to see it. I came to this thread expecting to find such a link, but no dice. I only know what people have said about it.

Full trailer incoming on IGN in 40 minutes from now as well.
sweet, the content in that first peek looked really good.
Sounds like people might get that permanent 12x xp they've been asking for when the expansion goes live. (Or at least something very similar to it)
Are they also introducing some kind of scaling to keep lower level content interesting (think GW2), or is this a whole sale dump of all quests but the class missions?
You see, I hate 12x XP for class missions as you miss out on all the gear that 'normal' levelling gives you. Unless they tweak the class quests to give you a full set of level appropriate gear every few levels you end up grossly under geared. Unless you have a bunch of crafters to craft it all yourself. Which I don't.

Not true at all. You get a ton of commendations for doing the story quests (choose those as your eligible reward). Then buy armor that allows you to modify it and repurchase new mods every several levels. You stiill will have an excess of commendations afterwards.

That's more or less exactly what they did this time.
Class mission rewards now give a ton of commendations, enough to easily keep yourself and your companion geared.
Not as easy as simply giving an entire set of gear, but close enough. (And besides, most people would transfer the mods anyway so that they can keep wearing their favorite armor. )

What Grimal sez. That was true the first time they did it, but this time they give you 12x commendations, too. I use the adaptive armor they give you for Galactic Starfighter and update the components every 5 levels or so. You get more than enough comms to do it for you and 1-2 companions.
It's so nice to just be able to focus on the class story; it's much easier to follow without having a half dozen other quests in the way.
So the new expansion is design to get players to subscribe and the continuing chapters are designed to keep them subscribed. Just one story instead of eight. Free level 60 to start new content. New companions with their own stories (wouldn't this be side questing?). Very little talk of f2p, except you get current expansions for subscribing for at least one month and must resub for future chapters. Current factions working together against a third?
Sounds interesting.

No problem here at all. Loved original Swtor, expansions were for sure not up to original but they were still very good. Now as it looks they are returning to roots. And can barely wait. Currently Swtor is my game No.1, 2nd for now Wow, close 3rd Gw2.

That's kinda where I'm at, as well. If there's any part of the story narrative that I don't like in SWTOR, or in BW tales in general, it's the buttloads of "ass-kissery" and "King of the Worldiness" that our maxed out characters experience. The last 2 Xpacs have kept us there with no real growth potential on a personal level.
From the sounds of things, it's looking like our characters are gonna get knocked off their high horse with this coming Xpac. To me, that's mighty appealing.
Using Yoda as an example, I think a story of something he did after his exile would be far more interesting than one with him as a high and mighty member of the Jedi Council. And it kinda seems like that's where this Xpac will put us.

It's not too surprising. I remember back when the game was new, and I was talking about the stories with some friends. One of the first things that came up was "Well, I don't know where they can go from there. Everyone's pretty much risen as high as they'll be able to go." Which would be the Emperor in case of the Sith, something that was never going to happen.
It should be interesting watch things unfold, and it'll probably be easier on Bioware to come with new stories as well now that we're no longer such a big deal.

Why did nobody know this new empire existed at all before this?
Why are the two brothers stronger than both factions considering all of our galactic war heroes are there to defend them? My Juggernaut alone would destroy both of them according to my personal story.
Why do the brothers look like Joel Edgerton and their father(?) look like a young Odin played by Anthony Hopkins? lol
I just feel like the game will end really fast again and with only one story for all classes to complete, regardless of choices you made, it will kill the replay value even faster. And I like being called a Sith Lord, I don't want to be known as the Outlander.
The one thing that I will actually enjoy is if I get to finally kill off companions like we could in beta. TIME TO DIE VETTE!!!!
Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.
Well it all sounded swell and dandy until I read "free level 60 character" , then I was in shock. Then I started a thread about it on the official forums find it here
I am no longer a subscriber, not out of lack of money or desire, but because of a lack of ability... player ability and skill to be precise. Due to my real life age and handicaps I have struggled with for years I now have gotten to the point where I can not play the game on an acceptable level past say about level 37-40. I took my time over the years and took many breaks from the game and was leveling a full team of crafters simultaneously as well, and now I know I will never reach 50 with those characters, let alone 60.
This game does get tougher as you get higher in level... you ask the question... will new Players be able to get up to speed and handle the content of the new expansion without previous experience learning to play their class in the old content? Good question.
I hope the current Players are ready to do some serious training with these new Players.
Very good question. We will see how this rolls out.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I'm skeptical about this expansion.

I agree with you on at least one thing BadOrb.
