So what's the next "big" MMO slated to come out?

Since D&D Online failed miserably in my eyes for a multitude of reasons, I'm once again left searching for the next MMO to grab my attention. I had targeted MIddle Earth Online...but it's being made by the same guys who screwed up D&D/pulled the plug on AC2 right after releasing an expansion--plus it's not out till end of the year, so that's out.

Is there anything big on the horizon? I saw something saying Stargate SG-1 was being made into an MMO...I'll definitely be checking on that one, but I'm guessing that's a couple years out.

I'm the type of gamer who isn't real big on hack and slash, though I'm not opposed to combat. I like searching for rare components, crafting hard to find/hard to make gear, doing the whole "player merchant" thing. I like to explore....I *love* doing trade runs (Buy at this place, safely transport to this place, sell for profit)...not real big on PvP. I don't like forced grouping (which is why I left WoW--end game was forced raiding, which is even worse than forced grouping).

Anything? Anything at all?

My hopes are at a all time bottom ATM.

My highest hopes goes with Heroes Journey...yet...something in me tell me to not trust them, that I will be disappointed.  I dunno why, call it a disappointed gamer instinct.  Yet, everything I read so far is either acceptable or great.

Tabula Rasa is my second biggest hope.

AA have my attention to kill maybe a month or two, but since I dislike PvP I can't seriously think to play AA longer than a month or two and be confined to ghettoness, nope.

Well, I am divided about WAR...but...the game is sooo far ahead in time and they already seem to be doing some mistakes, now I can be wrong and it may end up very nicely.  But so far, from what I read, I wish they would still work on Imperator rather than what I am seeing.  *sigh*

Maybe going back to CoV after I7...

But now...I am drooling over Galactic Civilisation II, the previews kinda ring like the 1st, but we will see!  Heroes of Might and Magic V is coming a little later (april?).

PS: Yup, I think it is a good idea to start ignoring Turbines and look for real game...heck Neverwinter II is coming...and another D&D title which the guys from BG's have high hopes for, so it might turn to be extremely nice.

For me, I am going to play RF Online (for a while anyway). It is a grind, but for some odd reason the beta was fun for me. Can't quit put my finger on what it was (wasn't the character customization or chat system, that is for sure), but there is something about it that I like.

I think the big game this year will be Vanguard. It is the one I have the most faith will deliver what it is promising and more. Of course, many won't like what it is promising (a PvE game with greater risks than most of todays games).

Darkfall looks to be very promising, but I don't have quite as much faith that they will pull it off. But if they do, it could be very good.

And I still will have some further looks at LOTR. Even though I expect it to flop, it is worth watching for now.

Conan also looks interesting, but I don't know if it is really an MMORPG in the traditional sense, and I don't know if it will interest me.

There are a few others that look promising which have been mentioned already, and a few that I currently can't remember. This year COULD be a pretty good year for MMORPGs. I don't think we will see a WoW, but I do think we will see some games with more variety and challenge.

Next year I am looking forward to WAR. I still think DAoC has the best PvP system ever, and if the game wasn't so old and stale (well, the player base anyway), then I might still be playing it. If WAR can fix the problems with DAoC and keep true to the RvR model then it will be a winner with me.

dont know if its been listed already but you should really check out RO2 when it comes out, RO1 is really well known for its ''merchant'' characters and had all sorts of elemental weapons to make / upgrading equipment / making items via smithing their ingrediants.

Phantasy Star Universe is not to far off the horizion, set to release (currently) Fall 06 for the US. I believe it will release around July or August, most likely.

I as well am big on exploration and rare item finding / crafting and PSU delivers. PSU will have a total of 3 planets, as well as some space stations/colonies, which you will be able to traverse via foot animal or vehicle with a team or alone, and the great part is that you can start off on the planet alone and have people join you as just like in Phantasy Star Online (PSU's predecessor) there will be a team/player listing on the colonies that players can select and join (and if its like pso youll be able to lock the room with a pw to restrict who comes in or if you want to be alone.) Crafting will also be available to everyone, using a Partner Machinery system. By giving your PM a certain combination of items, not only will it evolve but it will also create items for you.

Also, as a PM evolve it gets better at creating a certain type of item and can create rarer items then other PM's (for example, if you had your PM make sabers alot it would evolve to make sabers more effiecently, and get recipies for rarer and more powerful sabers.) This is not to say that PM's can only be good at one thing though, though how proficient in how many crafts a PM can be is unknown at this time. Selling your items will be easy as using My Room (a player space of sorts in which you can invite people, craft items, and list items to sell, as well as store items.) will allow you to list player made items and mob found items on a sort of virtual auction house which every player can view and search through by searching their room. You also have the option of selling your items in a player shop which you can set up anywhere in the colony (not sure on this one, believed but not confirmed.) Lastly, when your PM gets strong enough it can aid you in battle, which is another motivation for players to craft

As for trade runs, no talk of this yet though with 3 sprawling planets Im sure some people will want to back and forth items. The great thing about PSU though is its open base skill system, you become more skilled and powerful based on what skills techniques and weapons you use most. There are 4 races in PSU, Human (balanced) Newman (Technique aka Magic proficient) Cast (android thats range attack proficient, most accuracy) and Beast (strongest in melee, biggest of all the races). Using the open based skill system however you can overcome racial shortcommings, specialize or hybrid based on what you want (I for one am making a Newman who specialzes in HUnter weapons with a side of FOrce magic). I'll explain that a bit, see every weapon in the game is listed under three categories: HUnter RAnger and FOrce.

In PSO HU's RA's and FO's were classes that defined what skills you could use and weapons you could use, although they were also racialy bound (there were no HUnewms aka Human Newman or FOcast, FOrce Cast). However in PSU that all changes with the open skill system, since by using the weapons and skills you like most you gain skill in that type of category, but you arent bound to it (for example, if you used double sabers alot you would become more proficient in the HU type which would up your proficiency with all HU type weapons, where as using a bow or gun would make you more proficient in the RA type class). PSU uses a Fable like system in that you gain points for the weapon or skill you use more, and allows you to switch what you want at anytime. However while it has an open skill learning system it doesnt mean players will be able to be efficient in all three fields, there will be a cap, designing diversity and testing players to come up with different builds.

Theres over 20 weapon types in PSU this time around, so even if you dont like hack and slash you can use all sorts of ranged weapons, and magic. The battle system in PSU is very hands on as well, you control every attack you make, and you can combo in special melee/ranged abilites as well while attacking. It makes for a much more invovled fighting style and doesnt bore players to death with simple "click to attack, hit F1 F2 etc to use skill, rinse and repeat". You can engage enemies freely and certain weapons and magic (such as swords spears shots and aoe magic ) will allow you to hit multiple enemies at once (provided they are in range and you have them targeted). Targetting is pretty easy as you simply walk up to an enemy and it automatically targets, without locking you onto that enemy to allow for swift attacking and retreat if need be. Bigger enemies will have multiple targets on them allowing multi hit weapons to get multiple strikes on them as well as magic users to get more damage on them using aoes or the ranger crowd to aim for the more vital spots on the enemy.

I could go on and on about PSU, but Ill save you the reading time. Check out the links in my sig or post more questions in this thread if you want to learn more.

(And no, Im not a Dev [although I really wish I was] I just have a passion for this game, and Im anxiously awaiting its release).

Agreed, DDO was a joke. Im looking forward to Vanguard. The EQ1 team is getting togetter again and creating what will hopefully be the next generation of MMO's, whatever that means could be a endless discussion but it does indeed look promising and is said to be released later this year.

    Age Of Conan.

    Star Trek Online.

    Infinity.

Thats really the only 3 I am looking forward to. If they fail then I am giving up mmo's for a while.

Vanguard, every ex eq player will tell you this. WoW is based on some of EQ and look how successful it became. And the real eq was better!

There will also be un-instanced player housing and player built towns....not real big on PvPcheck Vanguard is designed as a PvE game but will have multiple PvP ruleset servers. I don't like forced grouping (which is why I left WoW--end game was forced raiding, which is even worse than forced grouping) Vanguards adventuring sphere will be group centric (even at end game) but you will still have casual, and raid content to a degree. The crafting, and diplomacy spheres will be very soloable though, and as mentioned will have equal content as adventuring.

lol j/k, Phantasy Star Online Universe is probably going to be good.

I am looking forward to Ragnarok Online 2. They seem to be doing alot with the game.

Vanguard and Age of Conan. I think that Age of Conan is going to be more innovative and Vanguard is going to repeat level-class-xp-treadmill gameplay with high quality implementation. I would definately try Vanguard, if it would have skill based system instead of class/level system - now I am not sure.

Other games just seem to have too weird graphics (comical/stylish/anime/cartoon), too small company behind them, too simplistic (you really can't call them MMORPGs) or just repeating same old gameplay pattern. But some of those other games are also very innovative. I might look also Darkfall - it doesn't have too weird graphics, it is complex enough and it have skill based system. However Darkfall's company most likely doesn't have enough capital too pull high quality release...

I hope that Elder Scrolls: Obsidian will open MMORPG developers eyes and they will stop manufacturing those level-class drones...

@Necbone: What can I say, Im passionate about this game. I'm really trying to make up for the lack of media PSU is getting and I want as many people to know about its features as possible. My ISP screwed me over with an email account so Im not fortunate enough to register at pso-world, but by passing on what knowledge I have of the game I hope to get my fellow gamers excited about this game. PSO didnt get nearly enough coverage and as such its playerbase wasnt nearly what it should of been. Now I know SEGA dropped the ball more than a couple of times with PSO and rehasing the same game for multiple systems with slight modifications wasnt the best move but the game had alot of design behind it. SEGA's learned from past mistakes and is really putting its all into PSU, and I think it is worth a look to every gamer out there.

Also, PSU is of Japanese orgin, not Korean.

@Cleffy: Ah yes, I got so wrapped up in PSU I forgot about RO2. RO2's another game to look out for, has alot of features like multi classing and an armor upgrade system which I think is real neat (no longer is it about whatever has the best stats, you can go for looks and upgrade from there.) Theres a wiki on the game if you want to read up on RO2, its another great game on the horizon. However PSO was my first mmo (and we all know what thats like) so you can imagine Im passionate about it, also the Phantasy Star games were some of my favorite games of all time (along with the sonic games). Ill be trying to balance time between both RO2 and PSU definitely though, as my gf is a real passionate RO'er (her first game.)

Cleffy, I advise you to check out PSU... it has alot of ro-esque qualities to it.

    -Shojin

(and you're right, I should really start getting paid by SEGA but I dont care =p, I just want the playerbase in PSU to be as good as the gameplay)

Don't really care what the next "Big" MMORPG is WoW is the current big, I tried it and it didn't suit. So I'm more interested in the next "Good" MMORPG.

Too which I'm hoping one of the following provides - The Chronicles of Spellborn, Pirates of the Burning Seas or Age of Conan.

Im most looking forward to PoTBS and Age of Conan.

However I think it is VERY premature to be talking about D&D in the past tense when it hasnt even been released yet.

I think the next BIG mmo to come out (not necessarily good) is going to be Warhammer.  The game will bring in another massive "nerd" influx to the MMO genre, this time from the realms of tabletop gaming and miniatures (which is a HUGE market).  I think it will be the next WoW.

Unfortunately, it's slated for what looks to be a late 2007 release, and there isn't any real indication on whether it will be "good" or not.  They have a massive lore and rules base to work from though, so I expect it to be a pretty good effort.  (Thank goodness that it's Mythic doing it, and not someone like Turbine or SOE)

    LOL

He left WoW because it is to Raid centered.  And you dare recommend Vanguard?  You realize that by using Brad's logic,  WoW have prolly 30% solo content, 65% grouping content and raiding is merely 5%, yet it is in the END GAME and thereby extremely problematic.  Changing the numbers and putting more into raiding is not going to make that grouper/soloer happy...

Especially that this player say:  He doesn't like forced grouping!  He consider WoW to be force grouping (he is right, but that would be a topic on itself) while Brad will consider that a game like WoW is WAY to much solo oriented and not enforcing grouping at all.

Those Vanguards fanbois deserve some bashing, and I intend to provide it!  image

This thread about sums up DDO to me (it should, I made it)

Keep in mind that I got to level 8 (of 10 max) in well under 2 weeks. And did every quest along the way. That game's ultimate downfall will be not the fact that you can max out during your free month, however. It'll be that if you make another character...no matter what character you choose...you're going to be in the same starting point as before, doing the exact same quests as before.

In general, I appreciate all the responses, guys :). Can someone give me kind of a rundown of what some of these other games are "like", though? Age of Conan stuck out in that list, and Pirates of the Burning Sea, I went to their forum and it looks almost like a version of a game Koei was going to release some years back that I was looking forward to, but never did--Uncharted Waters Online. Phantasy Star Universe...I didn't even know they made a Phantasy Star MMO...is it an Asian game? Never have been big on FFXI or Lineage mainly because of cultural differences. What is Dunadurium? It's not even on the games in Development forum list. Vanguard sounds like a grinding game, so don't much care on that one. But can anyone give me a cliff's notes version of what these other games are? Are they like UO where you can be a "profession" if you want (i.e. a farmer, a merchant, etc.)? Are they like WoW where it's kill endless mobs, max out, form raids? Are any of em like Earth and Beyond or EVE or the abomination that was SWG or...whatever? What do they closest compare to?
