[Column] Skyforge: Review in Progress #1

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Skyforge is a bit of a dark horse. While I doubt the game will come away with accolades and throngs of fans attending cons to praise it, Obsidian Entertainment and Allods Team have doubtless crafted a unique and engaging MMORPG. I’ve been playing for about 15 hours so far, and while some things worry me, the most important part is there. Skyforge is accessible and fun, with loads of goals to work towards.

IMO, the days when F2P MMO cash shops have to feel sheepish about selling shortcuts to leveling ended when WoW bundled in a level 90 unlock with their latest expansion.

i got also a nice pc. 0 crashes so far and about 25 fps. 100% fine.

The boost you get from founder makes you reach the cap too easily based on forum complaints. Each week the cap limit increases tough, so be wary of that.

F2P Nope not interested.  We have enough sub par MMOs that are P2W.  Go on and say I am wrong.  The only thing I will point out is this.

"Skyforge is not pay-to-win (P2W). It’s pay to progress faster; simple as that."  "Does this translate to power? Yes, but it’s the same as buying an XP potion or skipping levels in other games."

Basically Winning or Paying not to play content.  You might as well not even play a game because anyone who has played games for years like myself there will never be a game on the market that you will like everything in the game.  I go all the way back to Atari and NES games and paying to skip, win, or any of that is pointless to me.  Thats why its either a Sub game or nothing not F2P.

    Edit,

This seems like a game that Mobile gamers would like where they can pay to skip levels or win at levels like Candy Crush.  Good for them.

I don't think you win by being more powerful as all of your adventure, PVP, and teammates/opponents are scaled to you: if you have 1000 power, the adventure/PVP would be between 900-1100 power and your teammate/opponent would be between 800-1200 power. I doubt Skyforge is "Pay not to play content" because the sub does make the main resources progress faster (spark/exp, credit/money), there's always a weekly cap and once you reach the weekly cap, all rewards are replaced by secondary resources that will progress you in a not so obvious way (follower, costume), thus you can always be playing and feeling rewarded.

Paying to win by using xp potions, skipping content, unlocks faster, etc... this is more of the same, these game developers know we live in an instant gratification world today, they are pandering to this notion and making money to do so. There is nothing wrong with it from an ethical business standpoint. Unfortunately those of us whom have loved these games, grew up with them, formulated expectation through experience, we are simply not going to get what we expect in these games anymore. The market is highly monetized, gaming is more mainstream today, the end is not in sight either, not even kickstarter will save us. As long as there is no accountability, no governing body, this will be how it is from now on.

For me 25 fps is not fine at all, realy want to hit around 50-60 in games .
  • MikotoMisakaMikotoMisaka Member UncommonPosts: 34
Hmm, framerate thing may be an Nvidia issue? I run on max with an average of about 70 fps (drops to 45-50 in high pop situations, mainly the hub) with a R9 Fury X.

Also, other PC specs are similar, just 8GB less RAM, no SSD and have my 2500k at 4.4GHz

I'm sorry to inform you.. but subscription models are a thing of the past. No one wants to pay a box price + subscription to figure out if they like a new MMORPG. You're not going to see subscription games coming out and on the rare occasion that they do, they will go F2P eventually. Look at TSW, ESO, Wildstar.. any game that has started with a subscription is now going F2P because subscriptions don't work anymore.

I don't understand what peoples problem is with P2PF (Pay 2 Progress Faster) - it is not P2W, it does not give anyone combat advantage, and if anything it shortens the life of the game for those players.. but not for those that choose not to.

No.. you probably won't like everything in a game.. but honestly I can't think of a game that I liked 100% of everything.  There's no way for a game developer to please every player.. that's something that you'll just have to get over.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with desktop crashes Bill. Originally I thought it was due to overheating but last night I had 3 crashes, all while I was in the Observatory using the horrible buggy chat system.

They do have some things to fix like sometimes having to double or triple enter text in chat, disappearing mount hot key, etc.

I just couldn't get past the progression mechanics.  So much repetition of the same 4-5 instances is just not fun.  Particularly when the combat consists of spamming a boss for 5 minutes straight and calling it "challenge".
  • FranconsteinFranconstein Member UncommonPosts: 99

I'm running with a Geforce 970 G1, a very old AMD CPU, and 8 GB of RAM, and I haven't dropped from 30 FPS, not even during PvP.

At any rate, the game is fun, kinda well done (feels cheap in some areas), and it's definitely not P2W. Money makes you have to play less time, but doesn't make you "win". If you're solely doing PvE, then there's no one to win against anyway.

Hmm I have an i5 and a 280 Gfx and get round 50-60 FPS

Ah and while I detest F2P games with all my heart, this puts to shame most AAA titles on the market..

    PS

Ah and I haven't had any crash, just a weird reload of the zone I was in, sunday afternoon

  • JudgeUKJudgeUK Member RarePosts: 1,701

I'm stuck with the game not recognizing extra buttons/keys on my gaming mouse & keyboard.

Also for some reason it's not recognizing the L & R arrow keys, despite repeatedly keybinding these to A & D

Not progressing much further until they get this sorted,

  • muthaxmuthax Member UncommonPosts: 703

Oh I think this might help some people with performance problems, especially the NVIDIA guys (it also makes the game look awesomer with no impact)

you probably get better performance and results forcing AA and filtering from your gfx control panel or RadeonPro

I'd give it a shot again on the 16th. The repetition and mechanics of bosses after the first few are much improved.

Two hours in, I had logged off and thought about uninstalling it at least 4 times. Wasn't enjoying and was going back only for the Ggraphics and the UI, hoping some decent gameplay would come up. By power level 7-800 I was already havign a lot of fun. It does help, instead of spam clicking, actually THINKING and doing the right combo or attack at the right time (like you point out in the review) but I feel that a lot of people aren't really suited for this game or action RPGs in general

It's ok, it feels kind of  like Vindictus in a cyberpunk setting.

I don't care for the caps, they're just a thinly disguised energy system.  As you get closer to the cap you're essentially using up energy and once you run out the main way to progress shuts down hard.

100% Agree with Bills review, tech side I have a 2k+ rig and I am also having some problems. They do need to nail that down. For me it could also be windows 10. I am wishing I had not made the switch to beta test it right now as I dont want to takethe time to back up and format reinstall windows 8.1 lol.

Only thing Bill missed was time factor. You can play 20 min and feel like you progressed but this is not at the cost of being able to play for hours on end and get the same feeling. This game is great for people who have busy lives and need to play and get out. Finding people to play with has been a breeze so even on short missions you can get the bigger rewards and challenge.

So far its been my fav MMO of 2015 but I have yet to play Trove =-) May get to that later but somehow it looks like a 9 year old should be playing it. Said the same about the Lego games and I grew to love them greatly =-)

If you have time to kill, give this game a shot but make sure you get past 500 prestige or you have no clue what this game is about. Somewhere around 2k this game really opens up.

The Cap is making the game a bit aggrevating to me but it is still fun. I just find the adept stuff as a background thing perfect. Send them out to do stuff and work on my order while I personally work on my atlas, awesome cool stuff. Once I reach cap tho only working on the order got boring really really really really fast. So here is hoping the cap goes up so much that i dont notice it anymore.
  • muthaxmuthax Member UncommonPosts: 703

@nafoodle I am running on Win10 too, what do you have? AMD or NVIDIA?

Totally agree with your post BTW, specially the 500 prestige mark

PS Now I have to go try Trove, another game I snobbed but after this might be worth a try

When you get your adepts, more or less? I mean you get them at some prestige level or is it tied more to the Atlas?

If you are debating on getting into Skyforge and would like a founders key so you can get in a few days before they fully open the gates, drop me a msg here. I will give the first person a key so they can get in :)
