Would you make an mmo if you were a Billionaire ?

delete5230delete5230 Member EpicPosts: 7,081

If I were a Billionaire, and had more money I can handle or spend, my down time inbetween doing all the real cool stuff Billionaire's do would be making an MMO on the side.

Now, I'm not a programmer nor would I bother going to school for it ( Billionaire's don't need to go to school ) BUT I would have the best team of programmers on this Earth.  I would buy them an MMO building and pay them well with the best hardware and software money could buy.

I hate what marketing had become.  HOWEVER, it would be different. Their job would be keeping the public informed and paint an exciting picture of what they can expect.  Full of unimaginable features......Difference being, it would be TRUE....Infact the game will be way better than what is told......Treasures everywhere !

Things I would insist on at our monthly round table meeting would be :

- No cash shop ever.  $60 for the game,$15 a month.  Being a Billionaire why so much ?.........All profits would be directly reinvested back into the product. 100% to insure updates and expansions.  The money would steam roll in because were talking about the best mmo ever.....The product will eventually pay for itself ten fold.

- Fast production, no 7 years in the making.  However it will take time no matter how large the developer team. Even dough I'm a Billionaire, I have to be realistic.

- Graphics.  It's getting downright silly trying to make mmo's with maximum realism........Billionaire or not there is a limit. Graphics would be World of Warcraft quality or LOTRO......100% concentration on making a cool game with a cool world, with a lot of cool stuff to do.......Any thing else would be wrong, period !......If a percentage of the player base refuses, then they could take there power stations and look for something else, good luck :)

- Huge world, Open world, Non-instanced world....Not much time needed on this topic.  Being a billionaire, you could just imagine what I would do :)

- Completely solo game....Completely group game.....And everything in between game.  Why?....Because it's Huge !!!!!!

- Dungeons and Raids at all levels.  Deep ones.  No small ones, if you don't like it then kiss my butt.  I'm a billionaire !

- 3 Factions, 10 starting areas for each.

- Classes, 20 classes or more.  Also, I would search the world for the most open minded thinker to develop even more.

- Fantasy, well that sounds boring :(...........Well, remember I talked about re-investing all profits ?  One Expansion would be a space ship to take you to a SiFi universe to start over.  And I'll have that open minded thinker guy invent other cool stuff that I'm unable to come up with :)

Please feel free to add more features you would like to see.  Remember I'M A BILLIONAIRE, WITH A LARGE BUDGET !

    Off topic,

I would also buy a large city block, put a wall around it, and have the best Kung Fu Masters from around the world teach Kung Fu.

You guessed it, I'm into Kung Fu also :)......And I'm a pretend Billionaire !

No , i like to play mmo's not making  games !

I am ok with spending money on finished product, expansions, cash shops ... etc

  • vgamervgamer Member Posts: 195

Hell no unless I wanted to burn a lot of money. The mmo crowd is fickle, too much taste and too much competition.

Maybe I would start a kickstarter, selling the idea of the best game ever, Sandbox, space, survival, crafting you name it we have it. Also start a cash shop for my would be game selling 'items', up to $150000. Call myself vgamer industries, while hiring an old guy who had made some succesful game years ago but hasn't done anything worthwhile recently. Then delay as long as possible, firing people left and right and put my family in place. Then, when I have relieved these people of their money because they would have wasted it anyway, I release a shitty game hiring some indian guys, and walk away with most of the dosh. And people would celebrate me for bringing back the space-survival genre, calling me the next Mr. Roberts.

Why? Because I would be doing charity, teaching people the value of money. Why would I need to be a billionaire for this to work? No idea.

  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,499

If your focus is on how you would spend the money if you were rich, then that is why you will never be rich apart from getting very lucky, and even then, you wouldn't stay rich because you would spend the money and it would be gone.  Rich people don't get rich by focusing on all the frivolous ways they can spend money.

If I were a billionaire, I would have a very different set of life experiences, which would probably lead to different priorities and opinions from what I have now.  So I can't predict what I would do.

Money is only a motivator to a point - many game devs are already paid to where giving them more money wouldn't make them work harder or better

Overpaying people past the point where money is not an issue has a counterproductive effect to their actual work

In my years of work experience this is true.

Overpaying would not make them batter at all, the only thing this gives is less chance of quitting. Infact pay them too well they don't need the job eventually.

However you can flood them with resources. Better equipment, helpers and such.

I would buy Age of Conan from FunCom.  I would then start to use those resources for several things:

    Phase One

    • Bug fix pass
    • Finish crafting revamp
    • Finish Tier 5 raiding
    • AA revamp
    • Full skill tree revamp for all classes
    • Do a full balance pass on existing classes, especially Dark Templar, Guardian, Ranger and Barbarian.
    • Put Tier 1 and Tier 2 raids on a 24 hour timer.
    • Remove "World Boss Week" and replace it with a random chance to spawn for all World Bosses at any time.
    • Last part of phase one is to pump money into advertising
    • Fix Shrines of Snorri.  Add an arena for 1v1 and GvG pvp.

    Phase Two

    • Graphical revamp.  It could really use HD textures and better lighting/shadow effects.
    • Second full expansion.
      • Expand the "old world" by several zones.
      • New race
      • New six person dungeons
      • New 12 and 24 person raids
      • Continuation of Archetype story
      • Other stuff

If I were to have to re-vamp an existing mmo, it would be World of Warcraft.

I would have taken it in an entirely different direction.  Keeping the Vanilla formula.  Not the crap they did to it, that's called butchering.......No one EVER ASKED for the changes they made, that was a lie !

    If I were a billionaire, I wouldn't make a game unless I wanted to become a millionaire.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Maybe invest in one already released and try to buy it if the company no longer wants to really support it. It would have to be a game i really like though.

You'd have to be more than a billionaire to buy WoW off of Blizzard.  I'm sure that Funcom could be persuaded to part with Age of Conan for a few hundred million dollars.

  • KopogeroKopogero Member UncommonPosts: 1,685
LOL, billionaire...If I had only 50 millions I would use the 40 on developing game. 10 would be more than enough to keep my life comfortable for rest of my natural life. When that would be finished at least I would have something to do before I die...experience like no other human has had in the last 10,000 years.

lol ... Why waste my money on something that is already saturated to the point of what's the point releasing a new MMO for the next 10 years?    I'd much rather enjoy sending a 18 wheeler Lego truck to my local child's hospital once a year and put some smiles on kids faces :D.     MMORPG's are a waste of time now a days, there are so many titles, all look a likes that people are starting to quit the genre all together.  Besides, if it were that easy with a few billion bucks, Microsoft would have dominated the market 2 decades ago, but no, it's Blizzard instead that started it all with Rock N Roll racing back in the early 90's ... ah the memories "VIPER IS ABOUT TO BLOW!"

Anyway, MMORPG's is a dying race way passed it's prime.  MOBA's are the new thing and will replace MMORPG's sooner then you think.  The glory days of boss camping and grinding 10-15 hours a day in MMO's are long gone and barely attracting anyone anymore.   Nobody wants to sit at their computer for days or even weeks to reach End Game to actually start having fun in the game.  That's where MOBA's come in to play, and Hack N' Slash Diablo style, which in fact in 2016 3 awesome HnS are releasing.

So basically I'm answering your question without even knowing it, if I were to create a online game with a few billion bucks at my disposal, it'll be a MOBA or a HnS, since they're the new kick now a days.   MMO's are like old flip phones that people ditch for the new smart phones, which are MOBA's.

Yep, that's exactly why I would go for AoC.  FunCom is in financial distress and may be in more distress soon, so I think they could be persuaded to part ways with that title for a very reasonable amount of money.

Also, I have a deep love of low fantasy settings such as those that Robert E. Howard wrote for much of his life and I would be a careful steward of the game with his works in mind.

Yes I would produce one. And then, because I'm a billionaire after all and don't need more income, I would open it up only to those able to pass a series of tough IQ and personality profile tests... But don't worry, I'm sure one or two of you would get to play it :)

I absolutely would create my own studio and hire the best devs to create the MMORPG that I want and think a lot of other MMORPG fans want as well. It would have old school+modern mechanics (think Archeage without the suck). It may not be the next WoW, but I rather it not be. It would certainly promote community above all else, and reliance on your fellow adventurer. It would be soloable but encourage grouping by giving group xp bonuses and drop bonuses. If you are not interested in playing this MMO guess what? I don't care! I'm a billionairre!

    One can dream.
