In the real world, you can't start a court case or investigation based on rumours, your "gut feel" or because "these things look very suspicious".

If you have a problem with the regulation of Kickstarter projects, then attack Kickstarter. Complain to the FTC about the fact that you believe Kickstarter organises scams and encourages fraudsters. Don't start a vendetta against one of the projects that was organised via their service. Address the cause, not the symptoms.

... or, because we are not in the "real world" and nobody can be lynched or hanged, we can criticize CIG and CR, be skeptical of their promises and make notes of broken ones. See? It works in both ways - you cannot have a real lynchmob on forums and you cannot have it in "real world" by the law.

About crowdfunding: CIG failure to deliver can have have big repercussions for all future game crowdfunding projects.

Well, the only thing about this is it is Derrick Smart. He has his own game and record of not providing what he promised in a game. He has a history of not being honest with gamers. So he may be right, but I have my suspicions.....

It is just funny that it is coming from him.

Polygon also has a short article that reveals the first smatterings of response from RSI to the issues raised by Derek Smart. Community Director Ben Lesnick was interviewed by a German site about Star Citizen and, for the first time since the war of words began, issued a few statements addressing player concerns

Wrong. Ben Lesnick made several official responses to concerns on the official forums prior to the interview, the following extensive response among them:

    https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/271173/some-thoughts-on-concerns/p1

In fact Smart even embedded screenshots of posts by Mr. Lesnick in the article you linked yourself.

    Do your research properly MMORPG.com.

And it seems people forget this failure of a game. One of the largest flame wars in the young Internet's history and a game that was also held up to do amazing things....

Look people, when you give money to a Kickstarter campaign, you are taking a leap of faith. The money is a gift and you have to trust the people that you are giving it to.

CIG is not a publicly traded company and they are under no obligation to reveal their accounts. If this bothers you then don't donate.

Many of you have an insane sense of entitlement and it's unwarranted.

CIG has had to alter their game making schedule from a their 'one module at a time' plan to an AAA full featured release due to the generous level of funding. Expecting full-featured modules to be complete in two years is unrealistic and impossible for any game company to accomplish.

Bottom line is that Chris Roberts and his team have been quite transparent with the development process. Demanding exact expendatures and precise deadlines is not a requirement on CIG's part.

    This.

I pledged because I've played Chris Roberts games and I believed that he could create a great MMO.  I went in knowing it could be a loss, which was a risk I was willing to take.

As for Derek Smart, I knew nothing about him until this article, but in just a few moments of research I can tell he's a troll.  A direct quote:

"Sometimes when I get online, and it's quiet, and I see something that attracts my attention, I'll post just to piss these guys off. That's why I do it. Because I'm in a good mood that day, I go in there and I start trouble."

No wonder CIG is ignoring this guy.

As for Mr Smart, well unfortunately for you the smear campaign isn't working.

All the  hard work they are putting into trying to convince us Mr Smart is the devil is not working. I'm surprised warly baby and Mr have no fun haven't shown up. Perhaps the anitiation party in the boss private quarters paid for by donations is over yet.

This thread has been going on so long now that it needs a theme song equally applicable to both sides of the character assassination debate... here you go (turn CC on for the lyrics)

Yeah, I just put that there for the youngsters. I saw them do this (and a lot of other great stuff) live a couple of years ago. It was fun seeing all the custom walkers and a lot of hot 55 yr old chicks image

Here's a challenge to Derek Smart-ass. Ok, so foot the bill for the attorneys. However, put up a second escrow account for $15 million and, in the event that he was wrong, that money goes to RSI. THAT is putting your money where your mouth is. Also, there is absolutely zero advantage for RSI to entertain any sort of idea otherwise. That would top up RSI to what CR believes he needs to complete the project in its entirety and it also puts Derek Smart in a place where he actually stands to lose something.

OK. And here's a challenge to Chris Roberts: do what Mark Jacobs does with CU and offer a no questions asked refund to any donor who for whatever reason, changes his/her mind, THAT is putting your mouth where your money is.

That's great that there is a couple projects who offer that. However, the vast majority of projects do NOT offer refunds. The fact that Derek Smart has enough contacts to actually impact the funding and continued development of the game is the only reason they gave him anything. They even said it wasn't a refund. He is so intent on destroying others' work out of, I don't know, jealousy? Someone is doing something he cannot? Shoot, he is so full of bullshit, I bet he actually believes he has 2 PHDs.

It's more than just great, it's how it should always be because it creates a different dynamic that requires more commitment and accountability within a system that requires neither of those things. Non refundable pledges and pre-sales create a development environment that has none of the usual financial pressures driving it... and that's fucked up.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Or you could always just launch under Steam Early Access which has a no refund policy on EA games, right Derek ;)

There's another way of looking at it, though.

Given the long development cycle of an MMO, there's a good chance that many backers will suddenly get a case of "buyer's remorse" after 2 or 3 years. Maybe a new game launches and they're a bit short of cash at that moment. Human beings can be extremely fickle.

It would wreak havoc with your financial planning if your pledged funds could change dramatically at any time for any reason, even reasons totally out of your control.

Fitting song.  MC Hammer threw all his money away on bad projects and declared bankruptcy.
