I had the opposite happen with my first experience. With a hub (Lion's Arch) branching all race starting areas, it was amazing imo. Typical games start you out and you complete the quest hubs and continue to the next area. GW2 has some of the best open areas to explore of any game.
on the other hand i remember the time heading vom Freeport to Qeynos in eq2 at early levels and that experience was ten times better than the ability to instant visit all low-lvl zones without any danger or challenge
Meh you're really not fooling anyone here. EQ2 is a typical theme park and they all have there own level of challenge. EQ2 has no more danger than Rift or even LoTRO.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
They made the quests fluid they made things happends regardless if you were there or not.
Sure you can argue that It's all scripted and not much to hazzle about , but the thing is, it is.
The world feels alot more alive than kill 5 rats on the field and get your reward, things happends all around you and you can deside if you want to join in or not.
Why is this formula not worked on?, I mean alot of people are talking about Black Desert, yeah cool nice graphic, cool crafting but the damn world are stil born, the mobs are not moving or doing anything.
GW2 did something good with questing sadly few seems to follow it and improve on it.
Eh they were basically just a train on a beaten path. Just follow each scenario to the next one that pops. The quests aren't dynamic enough.
As a side note I think Runescape has one of the best questing systems. They are witty, engaging, rewarding, fun and make you want to do them.
Originally posted by Ludwik I wish they understood that the reason the triple head wurm, aetherblade path [...] flopped was because they required a level of coordination most players just aren't willing to give to a game.
They flopped? Tripple headed wurm is by far the most fun boss encounter I had in any MMORPG so far (playing this genre for more than 10 years already). The amount of coordination that's required for a 100+ man raid still fascinates me. And it does work...there are at least half a dozen raid orgas that kill the wurm almost each spawn. Just nicely ask on map chat in any major city for a TS ip and join in for the fun. And yeah, aetherblade path is also one of the more enjoyable ones - if there weren't those annoying oozes at the beginning that are a real pug breaker that dungeon path would be top notch.
I almost fell over with laughter because the OP did not see the obvious in his statement.
They did things right.......ooook i understand that part.
"Things happen even if your not there" falls out of chair lol.
You know i don't even need to buy the game to have those things happen ,i can not be there and not spend a dime doing it.
Also there is no better movie than seeing the movie i have not seen ....:P
The best food i could ever eat is the food i cannot be there to taste :P
I think you catch the drift?
BTW i feel sad that soooo many people have not seen through the smokescreen,Arena Net built their entire game around one premise>>>to support f2p and for no other reason.
well the magic of the MMORPG is that the world is not around the player, but the player is into the world. If the world is around the player then this is less MMORPG and more a SinglePlayRPG...
Too bad anet made gw2 a hello kitty aventure world that caters to easy mode loving ultra casual players.
So what do you define a MMO that is NOT a hello kitty aventure easymode ultra casual?
Have 2 trilion HP on bosses?
Camp boss spawn for weeks to get a chance to kill that 2 trillion HP boss and have a 0.005% chance to get that epic loot drop?
One hit kill mentality?
Full loot/perma death?
Aggro that last for a full zone?

No, more like:
- Challenging in-depth content.
- Intelligent A.I enemies.
- Less reliance on themepark content , vanity and gear based combat.
- More focus on skill based combat and build variation.
- More focus on team play, Penalties for teams failing objectives.
- Less focus on the cash shop.
All of these things arenanet is more than capable of doing and still earn a profit (GW1?), The reason they went in the opposite direction is because that's where the money is, casual players (whales).
I never understood this remark when it comes to GW2 "..but the DE's are scripted". Well , every game out there is scripted. Every event, quest, mob, boss, etc. Your car is scripted to , your Windows, and every other program you use is scripted.
Until someone invents AI , get used that everything is scripted! The remarks like "Lololo , shut up! GW2 events are script!" are pathetic, so please, read my post and stop being *REDACTED* !

I enjoyed GW2. I had a lot of fun playing it. I will probably check out the expansion someday should it go on sale. However, I don't believe ANET got it totally right with their questing. DEs are great. But they came with a trade off. In the traditional Theme Park Questing system, the "!" -> "?" got old. It had been done and done and done again. ANET sought to spice things up a bit, and they did. However, they system the way they implemented it, fell short in one critical area. The DE system in GW2 cannot really progress lore. It can support it, but it's very hard to tell the story in the repetitive and "open zone" manor they used.

Do you want me to explain what they are or how gw2 lacks them?
Ok gw2 did have a few bits of challenging content but in extremely small doses, marionette was good fun challenging content, too bad they removed it. I want the whole vanilla gw2 content to be as fun and challenging as marionette was. Another example was liadri but again they destroyed it by making it easy. As you are aware (if you play gw2) you can beat 99% of gw2 by following the zerg and spamming skill 1.
On the issue of lack of smart A.I again it does exist in gw2 but in an extremely small dose, The only NPC's I believe it is implemented in is in the practice NPC enemies in hearts of the mist. Fight them and you will see what smart A.I looks like, They are easy to beat but they do have smart A.I. Practically every other enemy in the game has dumbed down predictable stupid A.I

You're not really talking about any smarter AI than any other MMO. The change here is scope. You're fighting npcs that are predominantly single target fights. They don't have any smarter AI or abilities than say... mai trin. In fact some of them are even programmed with abilities the class doesn't even possess. They follow you around, they may throw an interrupt, or try to stop you from stomping them, which we've seen other NPCs do too, the few NPCs that have a downed state.
The portion of your argument about following the zerg lies in the fact that a zerg must first exist to follow. If you want to run Key trains, or meta events in SW, sure you shouldn't have a problem. A lot of the areas have dispersed enough to where the only time you see large zergs are for timer boss kills. Even still that doesn't help you in dungeons, fractals, PvP, puzzles and events where zergs aren't present. You can play the game based on running meta builds and doing "best practices" for each boss.. but I still find it funny, even in Ascalonian Catacombs fighting Kholer when most of the team goes down because they couldn't DPS fast enough to drop him before his first pull and they never learned to play it right and dodge it.
There will always be ways to get carried in games.. and you could find a guild that would be willing to carry you.. you can buy all your legendaries spending hundreds in cash, and you can only log in when you know you'll have people there to hold your hand or do the events where you know you won't be the only one. I guess thats whats good about games like this. You have the choice to suck however hard you want. It doesn't mean you can do anything you want at any time like the 99% that actually tries to play correctly.

We have another one that was confused by choice, youre better off in a game like WoW/FFXIV where you just do what game tells you to do with no choice.

Choices, choices, its TOO haerd for some people.
Everything in GW2 is a zerg, there is no escaping it. And everyone is the master of the "solo". A bunch of people in their bubbles converging together to bounce off each other for PvP and raiding never once having to leave their protective bubble. This game is an MMO in disguise.

I have a pretty easy time avoiding the zerg in GW2. Sure there are times where it's unavoidable, like daily world bosses or daily events completion. However, for the MAJORITY of the game world, you can run around and complete events with little to no zerg at all.
Your comments on grouping could be said for just about every single mmo out there as well. Forced grouping to do anything in a mmo hasn't been a "thing" for a good decade. You have to go back to older mmos to find those types of systems.
I really never found GW2 to feel all that different from the rest of the pack, it's a decent enough game, so I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I just don't feel the DE system changes things up enough to write home about.

Fortunately those who have even a litle clue about the game can avoid zergs with ease.
And, FYI, just to show how clueless about GW2 you are, GW2 has one of best group dynamics im MMOs.
Unfortunalely for you, that is also out of reach of plain zergling. Because, you know, it takes a bit of skill. Fortunately for you ANet has included lot of content for you zerglings so even you can enjoy the game.

If they only made it way more like gw1, a real sequel, it could of been absolutely amazing.
But no they opted for a casual wow clone cash grab and sh*t all over gw1's good name.

Having mobs stand around and reading that they are trashing the place is just the same as seeing mobs moving around and trashing the place.
