DC COMICS, SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT AND WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR COMIC BOOK ICON JIM LEE TO WORK ON MMO GAME BASED ON THE DC UNIVERSE

February 24th, 2006 - DC Comics, the largest English language publisher of comic books worldwide and the home of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman; Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry; and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE), a premier developer and licensor of entertainment content in the interactive space, announce plans to collaborate with legendary comic book illustrator Jim Lee to work on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO) based on the DC Comics universe.

SOE will be developing and publishing a game based on the DC Comics universe for next generation gaming platforms and the PC. It is expected that Lee will serve as Executive Creative Director on the game, bringing his artistic flair and talents to the world of online gaming for the first time.

“My position at DC has afforded me the amazing opportunity to dive into projects I am most passionate about. The DC MMO is no exception and joins my current commitments to ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN with writer Frank Miller and the upcoming WILDCATS series with visionary Grant Morrison as dream projects,” said Jim Lee. “The truth is that I love gaming as much as I love drawing and telling stories and look forward to bringing the DC Universe to life for players and comic book fans all around the world.”

“As a passionate online gamer and one of the most creative talents ever to work with the DC heroes, Jim is the perfect person to help build an online DC universe that our fans can become part of on a daily basis,” said DC Comics President and Publisher Paul Levitz. “The SOE team, working with Jim’s creative guidance, are building a new way for gamers and comic fans to unite and enjoy our legendary characters and their complex universe.”

“We couldn’t be happier to have an icon like Jim Lee involved with this project,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “SOE, WBIE and DC will be working together closely on this project and Jim’s contributions will be key to bringing the amazing world of DC Comics to life online.”

“Utilizing his outstanding and widely revered talent, Jim Lee’s ground-breaking work on the DC MMO will help lend authenticity and strength to the game’s design,” said Jason Hall, Senior Vice President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “His iconic art style and creative direction will enhance the look and feel of the game overall.”

“What intrigues me most about the DC MMO is how we can continue to tell the great stories DC is known for in this new medium and look forward in particular to the challenge of perhaps one day, simultaneously bringing stories to life in both print and pixel form,” said Lee. “True to their moniker, MMOs are massive undertakings and I look forward to working on the game and continuing to draw comics for many, many years to come at DC.”

Lee, the artist on 2005’s best-selling comic book in the U.S., ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER, is one of the most recognizable and talented artists in the medium, and a true fan favorite. His recent work on the blockbuster series BATMAN: HUSH and SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW brought critical acclaim, as well as a new look and feel to two of DC Comics’ iconic characters.

The only positive and truth in this merger is that Jim Lee is a great talent in the comic book industry. SOE is about to fumble another great franchise. They say lighting never strikes twice but if its truly God aimed to take out corporate stupidity then Holy Hotfoot, Batman!, SOE will soon be scorched again.

    Two things to note:

    1. SOE continues to redefine the business of online gaming and the creation of active player communities while introducing new genres on various entertainment platforms.

They are right. they have redefined it. No one can turn great ideas and settings into huge piles of dung like SOE. And as for active communities. They really excel at this - my god, I mean look at how active this forum is. That and the countless other refugee cantinas.

    2. Let me tell you exactly how Batman will fit into this SOE made mmorpg.

While prowling the rooftops, 733tNightwingXII sees a shadowy figure (complete with glowing yellow arrow over his head) standing near one of the edges. One look at the cowl tells him what he needs to know. Its the Batman. Wanting to increase his Gotham_Protectors faction, our hero makes his way over towards the Dark Knight.

"Sup, noob? Hear how Crime Alley peeps ph34r my skillz?"

Batman looks over and replies, "I am known as the Batman™. I am in desperate need of help. I recently obtained DEVICEX from the Joker™ and need someone to run it to Starlabs™ immediately. I would do it myself but I don't have the time. Starlabs is located one block from here and I will load the waypoint into your HEROMAP™ device. Good luck. Complete it and come back here for your reward."

    Sarcasm font off.

$OE had to agree to buy and run Matrix Online to get the rights to this, and we all know how well thats going image My money is on this bing another crappy game that will eventually get 'managed' right into the ground, along with all the other $OE games.

As for the DC liscense, about the only one there thats half decent is Batman, I think Superman sucks ass, and Wonder Woman? Ya right. Aquaman? Lame.  Never got into DC comica at all here, liked some Marvel ones but mostly I get into the independant ones, super heros just don't grab me at all I'm afraid.

If I was DC comics I'd be looking for a way out already, and just hire the NCsoft guys who did CoH/CoV and let them put in the liscenced junk if they need to.

I just don't get the continueing pursuit of IP licenses that would work great in a single player or limited group game world for MMOG use.

They get the Matrix, but everyone wants to be Neo, they get Star Wars but everyone wants to be a jedi, the get DC comics and everyone wants to be Superman.  Doesn't anyone there ever go, "jeez, this would be hard to make work if everyone wants to be the hero"?

Whats next for SOE, Jesus Online, where you too can be the son of God?

Even though I prefer Marvel myself, there are plenty of good DC heroes.  But if you don't like Super Heroes, you don't like Super Heroes.  That's kind of like a person who doesn't like chocolate saying, "Man, Hershey candybars suck ass!  Though, I do like Nestle's Almond Joy." image

    Jim.. Jim.. JIM!!!!!

Why must you make such a deal with the DEVIL?!?!?!

Arguably one of the top 3 artists... I just hope it doesn't interfere with his comic work.

And to add.. Notice the word "Iconic" used a bit? It must be on a plaque in the PR office.

Didn't take too much prediction.. the press release from $OE said something like...

"$OE gets license for DC Comics and plan to create an 'innovative" and "groundbreaking" game that is not at all like CoH.... by the way, they also bought MxO."

This seriously makes me ill.  It's like when your sister starts to date the biggest deadbeat, meth-head in town, and there is nothing you or your family can say or do to change her mind.  All you can do is wait for the inevitable nuclear fallout.  Oh DC Comics, why do you have to be our proverbial sister?!  I'm going to my closet to cry...

I would write the CEO of DC to give them the scoop on your feelings of the SWG by the SOE head John Smedley.

I have enjoying the some episodes with characters for starship enterprise. Everyone is work like much a good team. So I aspire to join this crew. But I was worried about one thing that is tiny to do with the show. When I watch I see relationship with men and woman and klingon and android but never for some man to touch man. I try to read this thing on sitesweb but only find answers to not knowing but questions. Why is there none?

    Alas-

lol, that is awesome...  CoH/CoV have the lock on the comic MMO market...  SOE will release something buggy at launch and fleece it's userbase again and again in order to change the game for WoW kiddies...

Its rinse and repeat with this company...  There is going to be a point where the Access Pass for SOE will cost more than to maintain, what will they do then?
