I understand the pvp-focused players are the most vocal on forums but casual players are truly the majority. If you want to bring in the most money, you dont focus on gear-based pvp.
^ This to a tee, I want a fun open world pvp/pvp focused MMO to bring back that L2/DAoC feel back in a modern MMO as much as the last person but that's not what sells. This is a interesting thread though, found it interesting how DMKano mentions we get the most polished/content heavy version of a MMO. While he isn't incorrect, with AA we got that and gave hackers time to make the most polished versions of their hacks to bring the game to its knees. When I saw all the hacking/bug exploitation and botting in the RU release of the game I felt there was no way that Trion would allow the game launch the same way here with no countermeasures.
I don't I've seen a MMO launch that had such a blatantly bad series of hacks/botting/exploits so effectively put into place with such a slow response and failure to create countermeasures on part of a company. I know no game is unhackable but god lord did that utterly destroy AA at launch and even now to a much smaller extent. It was alright because Trion made all their money back and much more from all the lemmings that got conned into founders packs and continue to whale out to a game with a great design but such a failure on a technical part and greed in part of both Trion and XL games.
Unfortunately, people still confuse the difference between a Publisher, and a Developer. Hacks are based on exploits of the games code, this is the development teams job to fix; 3rd party publishers don't have the people who actually code the game. Not saying that someone shouldn't take the heat, but at least make sure you know what you're talking about.

I was well aware that trion had very little power when it comes to coding and countermeasures (which is why I said Trion AND XL games),especially with XL games. They wouldn't supply the games code so trion could makes even small adjustments on their own, it had to be done 100% by XL games and include the language barrier and its a huge mess. That being said I didn't have to speak Russian to hear about the horror stories of the EU version of the game. When every single exploit that plagued the RU version makes their perfected versions (even new ones) into the NA launch then you have to to really wonder if it was purely XL to blame.
Its very easy to say Trion is not to blame until we are reminded of how they increased server caps against XL games wishes, how servers were repeatedly crashing due to above decision and especially the launch of Auroria. Its not about how much power they had to make changes, its about how all of this and all the hacking/botting/exploits were HANDLED. How there were ZERO rollbacks when the catastrophe of Auroria happened and the other major game breaking exploits surfaced. None of this came as a surprise since during beta when players started threads about concerns with the hacks/exploits in the RU version the threads instantly vanished and the players that started them stopped posting. The moment I saw that I knew things were really shady, but Trion just wanted to make sure all the founders packs sold before sh#t hit the fan.
The failure of AA was not simply on XL games hands, its about how every decision to every problem was resolved in a very amateur, unprofessional and incompetent manner. For WEEKS after launch AA was the game that everyone got a good laugh at (even if you weren't playing) to see articles on "what Trion screwed up this week" to witness them bowing and apologizing for this weeks blunder and offering their meager "compensation packs". To even see that months later every other article still manages to encompass yet another thing that was "unforeseen" and "not their fault" with yet more apologies and compensation really just makes me facepalm.
The thing that makes me laugh the hardest is years ago players would not stand for a game to charge a Monthly fee AND use cash shops (to sell their pay to advance items on top of that). Yet here we are post Archeage where players that still play it and find no problem with it what so ever while they actively support it and even endorse it such as some on these forums. What has honestly happened to people, have they reached the level of delusion so potent that it dulls their very ability to see they are getting robbed? Not even going to start with founders pack and how Trion is free to regulate what is on their cash shop, don't want to make the fanboys any angrier.
