For me it's mainly the PvP, as well as other interactions with players. If I want a good story or more interesting / challenging gameplay (when it comes to AI) I stick to single player games since they tend to do it better. I prefer PvP to PvE in MMOs because, along with SP games doing PvE better, PvP offers a challenge not found in any PvE. Competing against other humans who will not act according to a predetermined script and will do everything possible, sometimes very unexpected things,  to stay alive.

oddly enough crafting to make up for the lack of ability to do it in real life because of a sever lack of cash =/

Voted social, but its really about doing endgame content socially, either pvp or pve. I like the challenge of the endgame content, but as with everything in life, its better with friends.

Three words sum it up on why I love virtual worlds, exploration, exploration, exploration.

Voted for killing... Which is part of the reason I don't play mmorpg anymore, I am getting my kill fix from moba and shooters now. They still social games too. Immersion and mmorpg just have never clicked for me. It's tough to beat single player rpgs when it comes to immersion, games like Skyrim, The last of us, and likely Fallout 4 give me a much greater stimulated experience with respect to immersion.

That was a hard one to answer because of how everything overlaps so much, but in the end I went with Explorer. Years ago, it probably would have leaned more toward Achieving or Killing, but like some others said, MOBAs and FPSs do a better job at providing more rewarding content for those paths.

    No place for my vote:

I play MMOs because I like playing in a living world, not just npcs. Sometimes I like to group, sometimes I don't. With a good MMORPG I can play it the way I want, with or without other players.

You could say I chose all of the above, with the added benefit that I don't need to group with others.

edit: Just to clarify, if I feel like soloing, I still like having the other players in the world. I haven't been able to play a single player game since EQ1 for this very reason. Even if I don't talk to them.

    True story . . . .

When I was young my father took me fishing, he told me his father had taken him fishing, and his father's father before that . . . I'll never forget the time when he bought me my first fishing pole and reminded me of the day I too would take my son fishing.

Well, today I have no son because my wife is barren.  The fish in our river have two heads because of the toxic sludge from the local plant.   And as for my father . . . turned out he wasn't my real father, he was a con man named Joe who had 13 different families across the entire United States.

People often ask me, "Coop, why do you play them mmorpgs so much?"

I just tell em straight, "Cause aint nobody going fishin no more"

I picked the social option, but like many others indicate above, it's really a combination. In particular, I love the virtual world aspect, every facet of which is enhanced by playing with other players. If you want to exploration, questing, gear grinding, etc, but don't want the social aspect of all of that, then you should be playing Skyrim, not MMORPGs (as a general rule; there's always exceptions).

I'd like to second "RL crafting is too expensive." and third "Real life sucks." :unamused:
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

I play computer games for fun.  If a game isn't fun to play, nothing else about it matters.

It used to be for the social element, but only when games used to have social consequences, such as being a douche on a server would follow your main until it transferred and name changed. Now its more just to pvp, cause crushing people is fun sometimes and people are honestly becoming less and less social in MMOs, go figure.

I like customizing my character, finding cool gear/combinations, playing with my friends, meeting people, raging, and yeah. ^^

Along with an "All of the above" or  "Other" choice, there could have been a "I currently am not playing any MMO's because none are worth the time".

Like others have said, Other is missing from the poll.  So is 'Grinding mind-numbing repetitive, meaningless tasks' for the OCD crowd.

But of the choices listed, I am closest to the social type.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

  • nimander99nimander99 Member UncommonPosts: 288
Ummmm why no all of the above? This poll is flawed.

No there is nothing missing from this poll...........

maybe the phrasing from the poll could be a bit more clear, but for those that havent seen it yet.... these 4 choices are refference to the types of players we have in MMO's, a bit elloborated.... Explorer, Social, KIller, Archiever...  the only problem was explorer, because the ESKA dates back to a time when Quests and story werent really part of MMO's it was just a whole braod wide world to explore, But then what is QUests and story? I think i explore them all the time, discovering new facts about the world.

Just trying to identify what of these 4 parts people deem most important in MMO's

I really enjoy Lore and Exploration but not questing so terribly much.
I prefer a sandbox type of Exploration in a world with good Lore that allows players to create their own stories.
  • VyntVynt Member UncommonPosts: 757
Some of it contradicts for me. Like the first option, I love world immersion. I basically play for a virtual world, but I HATE questing, which usually makes it less of a world and more of a mini game treadmill that is so boring.

I also play for progression and like to play with others usually. I find the interaction more fun. I don't think I could just choose 1 because the game would feel very empty to me.

If I had to choose, probably the world immersion one because most likely that would have everything because you can't be immersed if it is lacking all the stuff I like, lol.

I play because I've found most single-player games to lack the depth and density of the content I can find in an MMO while raiding.

    Warrior/Druid - Level 90/90 - World of Warcraft
GLD Level 27 - CNJ Level 15 - Final Fantasy XIV: ARR
    Jedi Guardian/Republic Gunslinger - Level 50/50 - SW:TOR
    Cleric - Level 48 - RIFT
    Illuminati - QL6 - The Secret World
    Trickster Rogue - Level 50 - Neverwinter
Summoner Level 30 - League of Legends
    EGO Rating 363 - Defiance
