Yup, it crapped its bed, it went to the merry gpu hunting ground, it is in short DEAD!!!! I would like to replace it with something a little bit better but I have not searched for a new card in 4 years. Any suggestions? Any suggestions about company I should but it from? Thanks in advance for your help

What is your budget? Also, are you sure it died on it's own or something else killed it (electricity spike, bad PSU etc.)?

A cheap solution would be Nvidia 950GTX. Don't buy anything from Radeon or AMD this year, they will be totally revamping everything with their ZEN next year.

Not sure what it's pricing is like elsewhere but in the UK it's been priced at almost the same price as 960 and 380 making it a pointless card.

@The OP, a 380x sits in the same mid range price spot as your 7870 did back then and will give you quite a nice boost over it. I wouldn't replace a 7870 with anything less than a 380 or 970 tbh.

Zen is a CPU and the original poster wants a GPU, so that has nothing to do with anything.  New FinFET process nodes being available next year means that I'd expect both Nvidia and AMD to redo their entire lineups.  It's just a question of when cards launch.  With a video card dead now, you don't want to wait an indefinitely long time to replace it.

As for the original poster, exactly what do you have in your current computer?  For what it's worth, your old Radeon HD 7870 basically still exists, but has been renamed twice to now be a Radeon R7 270X.  To give some idea of performance, a Radeon R9 390 or GeForce GTX 970 will offer about double the performance of your old 7870.

They are changing their GPU to Zen tech too. Read it directly on amd.com.

sorry i had to laugh at u.. ZEN cannot be applied to Gpu.. 2 DIFFERENT techs impossible to make. and also Amd will never get back they failed over 5 year's ago and kept falling year after year. drivers, and hardware.

Sorry but its a fact. Even HBM 1 failed so much it had a very low memory speed around 500 if i remember correct. while Nvidia with HBM 2 will bring the 5-7k

i would recommend u trying to get a gpu that is in the same price range as 7870 was.

That's completely insane. No matter what AMD releases next year, it's not going to make GPUs bought this year perform any slower.

OP: What kind of computer you have otherwise? If the computer is already getting older, you might want to just purchase some cheap GPU to match the rest of your system.

Alternatively you might also consider purchasing high-end GPU if you're planning to update the rest of your computer soon, so that you won't have to buy another GPU when you make the update.

Computer is as slow as its slowest part, so you should consider the system as a whole when deciding what to buy

The hate is strong with this one.

I wasn't really commenting on your AMD hate, tough. Personally I don't take a stance on AMD vs. NVidia, I think people should by the best graphic card no matter who made it. I also think that on most situations in today's market the best is NVidia's card. So I don't want to start arguing for AMD.

I just argued against jesteralways' logic because it was so completely stupid.

Theres really not much to discuss, theres price brackets and you choose from:

    r9 390 (300$)
    r9 380x (230 $)
    r9 380 (170$)
GTX 950 only if you cannot get couple of $ (20-ish) for 380 under any condition ;P just buy 380

depending on how much money you want to spend ;P

Oh, and never NEVER buy referent model (cooler) because they generally suck....a lot.

ANd its a good idea to buy GPU with 4 GB of RAM if youre buying for longer term and play on 1080p (and 1440p)

Fort instance this is great deal for 180$

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131673&cm_re=r9_380-_-14-131-673-_-Product

ALthough, both NVidia and AMD reduced prices on their whole lineups recently, and it will take a bit to hit the street so its wise to wait for a week or two prices should go down, if you can manage.

If youre asking about brands, MSI (gaming), Gigabyte (windofrce), XFX (doble dissipation), Powercolor (PCS+), Zotac, EVGA, all good. Asus (stix) is behind and more excpencive

Is that why amd regained market share for the quarter fury x/fury/nano released :P

The Radeon R9 Fury series with 512 GB/s has far more memory bandwidth than any other GPU ever made.  The most that Nvidia has ever made is 336 GB/s on the GeForce GTX Titan X and a few other cards.  I'm not sure why you'd focus so much on memory bandwidth, though, as even the Fury X has more bandwidth than it can really put to good use for graphics purposes, let alone the slower cards with the same bandwidth.

AMD's CPUs have been problematic for the last several years, as Bulldozer was a disaster for reasons that doomed all derivatives of it to be problematic.  But Zen is a new design, not another Bulldozer derivative, so it's not doomed for the reasons that Bulldozer derivatives were.  Zen could be awesome, or maybe it won't be.  But that's a CPU and the original poster isn't looking for a new CPU.

HBM was co-developed by AMD and Hynix.  Graphics vendors can only use the memory that the memory fabs can build, and presumably you can only buy HBM1 so far.  Given AMD's expertise with HBM, they opted to use it on the Fury series cards, while Nvidia hasn't used it at all.  When HBM2 is available, it will presumably be available to any vendors who want to use it.  But that's waiting on what the memory companies can build.

Given that AMD co-developed HBM and Nvidia didn't, how likely do you think it is that Nvidia will adopt HBM2 while AMD will decide that they don't want to use HBM at all anymore once HBM2 is available?  You could argue that HBM2 will be better than HBM1.  You seem to be arguing that HBM is awesome if Nvidia uses it and terrible if AMD uses it, and that makes no sense at all.

Nvidia intends to release it's GeForce 1000 series Q2 next year. The next generation graphics processor is code named Pascal. AMD released their HBM1 cards this year while Nvidia plans to hold off on HBM and release theirs with HBM2 which allows for significantly more 3D RAM to be stored on a GPU.

I personally can't wait to see how much of an improvement HBM brings to the table. Next year will definitely be interesting for the IT world.
And what makes you think that AMD will never again release new GPUs?  The 14/16 nm FinFET process nodes will be available to AMD at the same time that they are to Nvidia, and it's obvious that there are huge performance and efficiency gains to be had provided that the nodes are anything remotely similar to what the fabs are promising.

To take a historical example, AMD had GDDR5 well before Nvidia in the Radeon HD 4870, and then in the 4890 and 4770.  By the time Nvidia started to adopt GDDR5 in the GeForce GT 240 (basically a test card, like the Radeon HD 4770) and later most of the GeForce 400 series, AMD didn't suddenly abandon GDDR5.  Rather, AMD offered it in almost their entire lineup, outside of the bottom of the line.  As with GDDR5, AMD invented HBM with the intention that they'd use it in a lot of products, not just one and then forget about it.

Thanks for the responses, I can spend up to $250, just deciding whether to stick with Amd or nvidea. Should I buy from New Egg?  yea it was my video card , it started making wavy lines across the screen , I took my 7870 out and put in an old 4870 and it worked fine, my computer no longer recognizes my 7870
  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,499
I usually link stuff from New Egg just because they have good deals that are easy to find.  For comparison, Amazon has good deals that are hard to find, and I'm not willing to spend half an hour fighting with a search function that doesn't work just to help someone else.  Some sites don't have good deals at all.  But if you find a better deal from other site rather than New Egg, have at it.

I see three basic ways that you could go.  One is to get a Radeon R9 290 on clearance:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129316

That's much faster than anything else that fits your budget.  The down side is that the reference cooler is pretty bad, so the card will run relatively hot and loud.

    A second option is a Radeon R9 380:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125794

    Or if you like rebates:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131673

That's significantly faster than what you have, and competitive with a Radeon HD 7970 that was likely AMD's top end when you got your previous card.

The third option is a GeForce GTX 960:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127844

That will use less power than a Radeon R9 380, but it's also slower by perhaps 10% or 20%.  For most people, I wouldn't recommend it at current prices as it's slower than the R9 380 for the same price, but it does use significantly less power, in case you're really sensitive to that.  For temperature and noise, the R9 380 will be fine.

hmm I like the r 380 for 179 w 20 rebate, plus good reviews, I was able to play witcher 3 on high settings with my 7870 no prob so this card should be fine, thanks Quiz

I am not sure where you are from, but Best Buy will price match new egg or amazon if there is one near you.  I have not had any problems with new egg stuff, but its a pain to send stuff you buy online back.  Best bet is just to search around.  I have an AMD r9270x and it is holding up well.  If you are just looking for 1080 a mid range card ($150-200) should be fine.

It is not about performance, since they are revamping and bringing in new tech they might stop providing support for older tech completely. I don't know about where you live but in my country importers and sellers do it all the time, for example : when we got gtx 960 here, all the importers and sellers declared they would no longer provide any technical support for 700, 800 and 900 series that came before 960. i had several customers who bought gtx 780 just 6 month before that announcement and i even told them they had 3 years warranty and technical support. If it is not like that in your country then that is great but my suggestion was based on that fear alone.

As for confusion about Zen, even on AMD innovations page the new cpu and gpu info are under zen announcement. So i thought they might be applying same tech on graphics card too. Sorry if i created confusion.

When my GTX 770 bit the dust i got an 970 and the performance has been excellent.  It has handled everything i threw at it and if you aren't looking to run everything at ultra max settings but close too its a great choice.

The MSI version in particular is fantastic.

What tech support? I confess I've got no idea how tech support is handled in your country (Bangladesh?), but where I live you might get installation help from the store/importer, and after that you'll get no more tech support from them. All future tech support gets handled by the manufacturer, AMD or NVidia in this case, and their tech support is going to continue for years even if it's usually limited to driver updates.

Warranty is separate from tech support, and it's handled by the store that sold it. Where I'm from the store will replace your old GPU with newer and better version if the old one is so old they can't repair or replace it with same model any more.

If you're a business then the rules are different and you might actually get something like 3 years of tech support from the store, or if you're buying a complete computer that might also be different, but you're the first one who's ever talked about a store giving years of tech support to a single GPU bough by a consumer.

EDIT: Maybe someone from USA should comment on how tech support is handled in there. Comparing tech support of Bangladesh to tech support in Finland is not going to be a good indication on what kind of tech support the OP should expect.

In my country tech support and warranty are almost synonymous, if device is acting poorly they test it out and if they face the same problem they send the device to manufacturer for replacement if the customer is still within warranty period. And sometimes they just disregard warranty period by saying "your product has been discontinued by manufacturer so we can not provide you replacement.", it mostly happens when manufacturers bring something completely new like in my case MSI brought in brand new GTX 960. Fortunately for me that none of them suffered any problem with their 780 until at the end of 3 year warranty period. But i don't know how it is handled in other countries, so i just suggested not to buy anything from AMD/Radeon at the moment in case things like that happen somewhere else.

Ok, that explains the difference then. In my country "your product has been discontinued by manufacturer so we can not provide you replacement" is desirable because then you'll be given another and usually better product as warranty replacement.

I didn't know it worked differently in other countries. Ty for info.
