As I play in the beta tests for NCSOFT's Blade & Soul western release, I notice a few things. One, the game's still gorgeous despite being three years old. Two, the PVE questing is pretty rote and unmemorable. Three, the combat is probably the best combat in any MMO since TERA. And four... its PVP flagging system seems to make for a game that PVP and PVE fans can get behind.

what is it with Asian mmos that they always have to make it look weird somehow. it's either the way characters run, or the way some races look, or style of armor, or world setting....something always gives me the gag reflex. why can't they just do a beautiful, normal fantasy looking game?
so detailed.....but why always so weird?

It's your western style aesthetics, nothing much you can do about it except to accept that's the style of aesthetics that eastern likes

Maybe to them that's beautiful and normal?

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Ohhh you did not just hate on one of my favorite artists.
Well some people like vanilla ice cream. There's no accounting for taste, etc. etc.
the nice thing with that game though is that you can completely overthrow his style and make yourself a plain dumpy looking character. it just takes time and sliderfu.
But then you say the PVE is quite weak in this game and nothing to write home about. So wait why am I supposed to get excited again?
Pvp holds no interest for me and I found the combat irritating, rather than good. I don't want to dash/run/dodge/hit/backup/kick the whole time. I play mmos because they're one of the more relaxing game types. They're also something I can spend hours in, totally immersing myself in its setting, but I can't do that if I have to dash/run/hit/move the whole time because it will wear me out.
I tried out the different control setting (not the B&S setting, but the 'regular' mmo one, but the game became almost unplayable so I had to revert back to their own system.
As for the story/animations/voice over; everything lacked something. It was cheap looking/sounding. it lacked soul (no pun intended). It was all very shallow and flat.
The only thing I don't much care for is the pajamas your character earns... wear theses pj's and yer flagged for pvp. Wear these other pj's and your ready to be tucked in for a nice nights sleep.
Yeah, heavy eastern themed mmo's just aren't my thing, I really hope there are costumes that make my character look badass... not like I'm ready to lounge about for dinner and a nap
I played beta for a few days. I enjoyed the combat, read the quest text (as I always do) which was pretty standard.

If you look at the wardrobe feature in game. You can preview a large amount of available gear. I thought the same as you at first. But, once you see some of the gear the game has to offer. You might be surprised. A few of the chest pieces I previewed are easily some of the best looking gear I've seen in any mmo.
As so long as I can do my PVE question in peace and without PVP interruption, I'll definitely be giving B&S a try. I hate MMORPGs that don't have a PVP Flag System. PVP should be by my consent and not active all the time. Or PVP should be behind an instanced battlefield map, away from open world PVE questing. I don't even mind Open World PVP Zones in MMOs. That are only for PVP and you are flagged for PVP if you walk into said zone and said zone is only for PVP. In my opinion PVP should always be by player consent and not forced upon a player.
You consent went you sign into the game. I don't mind blade and souls approach to pvp. But open world had its place to.

I really don't understand your attitude. Not everyone likes to pvp. No one should be forced to in an mmo. I personally enjoy PVP. But, I'm aware people like things and dislike things different from me.
Basically you have to wear a certain outfit to be part of the faction PvP, similar to flagging yourself on PVE servers in games like WoW. So basically this is ideal for PVE'ers and PVE' ers that like to casual pvp.
But then you say the PVE is quite weak in this game and nothing to write home about. So wait why am I supposed to get excited again?
For me my problem with Asian mmo's is they are just fun for a few weeks then i don't login anymore. The gender locking and running start to bother me too.
You don't want to get tackled? Don't play tackle football.
You don't want to get shot don't play paintball.
You don't want to pvp don't play a game that has pvp as an integreal part of the game.
Not every game has to be the same or has to have segments for every gamer population out there. It's ok for games to be hardcore pvp and games not to have any pvp at all. Or combat for that matter.

Sorry BS fans but pvp? no no no
looks pretty damn sweet, and if the PvP has real risk vs reward then all that much better.
AGREED! ok just a little insight, A lot of Korean Games/MMOS has a competitive scene in Korean ESports, NOTHING I repeat there's NOTHING that includes Pure "pve" in the Esports its all about "PvP" [mod edit] Player vs Player is where its at people get the prize money by killing other players and prove your worth and get the champion title.

It's not really an attitude, When you play a game that is open world pvp either deal with it, or play another game. Im not saying there should be games that dont have pvp. My favorite mmo of all time is FFXI and there's basically zero pvp in that game. But im not going to buy a pve only game and then start complaining that i cant kill anyone.
B&S is not a PVP only game. It is a PVE/PVP game. So your point kind of collapsed on itself. There will be lots of players there with zero interest in pvp. For those that are interested. You can flag at any point with your faction outfit. If NCSoft wants B&S to do well in NA/EU, they will cater to both.
If this was like Darkfall where PVP was the only thing the game was going for. You would have a point.
-The PvE, in this beta, is indeed really weak. The game is way easier than years ago, and we have a patch that is 3 years old. It has been said that on release we will have more PvE content (pohwaran 4-6-24man dungeons), and patchs will follow quite fast to eventually be the same as in Asia within ~a year.
-The PvP is definitely the core of the game, even if the PvE is deeper in Asian versions.
*As mentioned, you can fight Faction versus Faction (Red vs Blue) every where, meaning you can PvP when.you.want. OP asked about the real purpose of the faction quests, no there is no "territory holding" but you can definitely make the enemies' life hell by killing their NPC, preventing to do their quests, because yes there is a purpose of doing Faction quest, mainly farming pvp gear. So pve lovers won't hate the system cause won't care about those quests anyway, and pvp lovers will find a really challenging way of farming pvp gear, because you need to be good and organized if you want a better gear. By Organized I mean calling other faction members via the dedicated channel, pick up some passersby, ask your friends/guildmates etc.
*Another way of doing open world pvp is by wearing any other dobok (pvp uniform) of other in game faction. Nearly every NPC in the game has a faction, and of course there are rival factions. While this system is less popular than conventional Red vs Blue, it can be really fun to organise PvP with your friends/guildmates/other guild saying : ok I wear this Uniform, wear the rival one, let's spar together.
*The main star of the game would be the 1v1 arena (and 3v3 to a lesser extent). BnS E-sport becoming strong these years, it definitely sparks interest and challenge for PvP lovers with thirst for fame. There will be internal NA/EU tournaments, but also World cup with other countries (Korea, japan, China, Taiwan), making the challenge real. We already organize weekly tournaments (Imperial Tournament), and it is becoming more and more popular, the level of the Western players already really interesting, as shown when they were sparring vs Jaesung (3rd place in the laster WC).
To sum it up : PvE wise, don't let this article convince you to not give the game a try, because it will become far more overwhelming soon as the patchs are released. PvP wise, this game offers the most challenging and skillful experience in arena, while still being friendly and intense in Open world.
And as for catering to both, we all know how well that has worked out for games in the past
