It’s rare that an MMO comes across my desk for which I don’t have much background or context. It’s rarer still for that MMO to be in closed beta, with a lot of localization work and polish needed, and still leave a tremendously positive impression. Enter Black Desert Online (BDO), the upcoming fantasy MMORPG from Pearl Abyss and Daum Games, which just completed its first CBT this week.

Definitely been wanting to give this one a try, but haven't been lucky enough to be selected for Closed Beta. Hoping to get in on Open Beta to see if its something I'd enjoy. Does look beautiful though from all the videos/screenshots I've seen. But I realize that eye candy on top of a terrible foundation won't make for a game that will last.
Just buy a CBT2 key when they get released. I bought my CBT1 key for 3$, and worked perfect. I plan on buying the game because of buying the key.

There is a LOT to this game that is never really discussed in most of the articles and forum posts. Everyone just focuses on the combat, and PVP element, and lacking end game PVE. I was doing so much other stuff during CBT that i never even hit level 20. Workers and the knowledge system have a lot of depth. I played around with the personal professions and house upgrades a lot, but barely even had a chance to get into the trading and farming.
It definitely is beautiful, and what's more impressive is how smoothly it runs, and how well the characters interact with the environment. Jumping is detailed, and you don't get stuck on every little thing. You can lean against walls, and enter a spectator view to look at your surroundings. There are some things to iron out for sure, but it's a very impressive game.

Didn't get past gender locked classes on character creation. Sorry, maybe it's my loss, . But gaming is visceral to me, and I've learned if it doesn't feel right and I have to rationalize it then it won't hold me very long anyway.
Merry Christmas!
Every class is receiving a male/female counterpart. Warrior/Valkyrie .. Witch/Wizard .. so on so forth. Theres a female/male ninja and soon well have the male ranger counterpart.
It goes with the lore - and the lore in this game is so disgustingly in-depth that it makes sense - and they are being released super fast in KR .. so we'll get em pretty fast as well :) ...
Its not worth overlooking this game because of the male/female thing - it really is one hell of a game.
PS - All mammals have nipples.
Get over it already.
Merry Christmas everyone :)
It has amazed me, and I love the way you can do a dungeon from anywhere, and you are joined with anyone acroos ALL servers great idea.
Looks like I will be getting these two come 2016.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
--------------------
1 - The game is beautiful, but honestly not as extensive as I had thought it would be. ESO looks nearly as good at max graphics levels. Environmental graphics at max are better for ESO in some areas, better for BDO in others, although character models are definitely better in BDO. Altogether graphics are about the same IMO, although BDO gets a slight edge here.
2 - I would prefer less gender locking (although some should be in place; The Berserker is male only in the local folklore, and there really is no real male counterpart to the Sorceress in asian folklore), and I see no reason why they did not include the character type I really want to play right now, the Blader (Samurai).
3 - They have a long ways to go with conversation translation, and some voice acting would be nice. I assume most of that will be fixed before release.
4 - I understand why they have the system in place with character trust building, to help build player immersing to the game, but it is too extensive. By the time you earn an NPC's trust you outleveled the NPC. I can't see anyone doing any of the trust building excursions unless the reward is gangbusters!
5 - GREAT combat! Quite fun, and that's enough to carry a lot of players through a lot of boring content, although this game, at least up to level 20, has good content.
6 - I am very concerned that the PvP crowd is going to drive away a lot of potential players (and money!) from this game. I saw a lot of gankers waiting for players to hit 30 (the PvP enabling level). I don't mind PvP, I do a lot of it in ESO, but I do not want it forced down my throat. Maybe PvE only shards would fix this, where the only PvP is duels and the Black Desert?
7 - there are a lot of new interface methods in this game. Not really a negative though, as its just adapting to the new buttons to push. After a while I was starting to like the new interface, although I wish we could have more than a half dozen abilities on the taskbar. But ESO is the same way, and I got used to that.
8 - The Black Spirit is actually a fun part of the game, an interesting guide character that you KNOW has a devious plan that involves you, maybe in ways that are not so nice! The interaction with the Black Spirit was a fun way to learn the basics, and I'm sure eventually he shows you what your past was.
----------------------------
While I enjoyed my time in CB1, I think I am going to skip this game, as there was no really compelling reason for me to give up my time in ESO.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!
Is there any hard PVE? Hard areas with hard NPC mobs? I like the open world, but I want some hard pve mobs and dungeons (open world dungeons is fine) to go with it.
From what i've read in the past, no. It's mostly open-world gameplay just like Archeage. I wouldn't expect good dungeons or raids. It's mostly world bosses. The same with pvp. It's either dueling or open-world, and no instanced pvp battlegrounds. As much as i like open-world gameplay, i like instanced content for group play more.

What the hurry, why not just wait for open beta and try out the game for free? I don't ever remember not getting an open beta invite on a game I applied for and most of the time end up getting a final closed beta invite for free.
There will not be an open beta for BDO, it says so in their FAQ. I believe CBT2 will be their last "test" and then it will go b2p.
no open beta huh ?? do they fear something hahaha ???

Usually open betas are held to test server stress that comes with a large pool of people. I believe there are going to be enough people for the closed betas for this purpose, so no need to an open beta.
Almost forgot, I fell in love with the game right after I played the closed beta. The gameplay can be a bit different compared to other MMOs, but feels really rewarding and fun. A whole lot better than Archeage in my opinion.

I personally refuse to buy a key from the people who "steal" them from the "contests" on sites such as this one.
Here, have all of my love <3
By having unique classes for either gender they are doubling the diversity of classes in the game.
Why is it better that a female magic caster does the same moves as a male magic caster?
I've seen people say that the kind of genderlocking they're doing in this game is lazy. The lazy thing would be just to have the exact same class for each gender.
Clearly it's a thematic design decision and it actually caused a lot more work for them than it would have if they went the normal way and have males and females do the exact same things.
