And yet no mention of how many were actually sold or even made available. Lets not pretend it was some high number because it isnt. They are also giving quite a few of those that were available to kickstarter backers.
hmmm sounds a whole lot like stretching
this has happened twice now once for GearVR and once for this one. oh and DK2 kits were selling for 3 times the retail price once they stopped selling those which also sold out.
I dont see any evidence to suggest this is not a big hit can you please point me to some evidence that suggests its not a big hit? or maybe just the largest scam in tech history which is possible
OR
some evidence vs no evidence
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
I wonder if ESO is ready to deploy a patch to use it? Because if so, I'm game.
If that ever happens or when a game that I actually play or want to play (not 180 random ones including a lot of porn lol) is a better game with a VR headset than without one, that's when I'll begin to consider buying one. Killer apps FTW!
But by all mean early adopters, go forth and multiply. If there are enough of you VR may become a thing.
Just remember though, the Blackberry was the first mass consumed PDA/phone with "Email everywhere!" Have you taken a look at Blackberry stock lately?

They said they were targeting average consumers, wanting to make VR as widespread as possible.
Now they target enthusiasts.
I just hope VR does not sink before it even had a chance due to this..
They are targeting average consumers. $600 for hardware. How many people do you know that have powerful video cards for that much? Or would drop $600 on a state of the art TV? I guess it's about perspective. I'm not saying $600 is cheap. It's not. But it certainly isn't out of reach for the average consumer that would need a high end PC to run this. Chances are if you have a PC that could even run this thing, you could probably afford the Rift if you really wanted to spend the money on it.
Also, they aren't locking people in on pre-orders. You're not charged until they ship. They want people to have time to see reviews first to make a decision. The company is on the up and up.
oculus says they're not making money on the hardware and that it's cheap based on the tech to make. bad news for peeps waiting on the htc and ps4. means it will be just as expensive, if not more. OR it won't be near as powerful most likely if cheaper.
I call BS on that. It is using the computers hardware to power itself, its not like it has its own cpu and gpu inside it. SO effectively it is just 2 screens and a circuit board with some flash memory to hold its instruction set. I am sure the software to run it cost a pretty penny to develop, but the hardware no freaking way. I would be surprised if the things are more advanced than a raspberry pi inside.
There is no possible way in hell the hardware in the rift base cost is 600$.

IDK... it's possible... if it isn't made in a Chinese slave camp like all the other gadgets.

Indeed, I call BS too. Bet you later on we see a much lower price for it but without gamepad and the two games..
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
@RexKushman My sister just got a type of Oculus for her phone (Samsung) and she said it only cost her 160$.
It's a $100 box that you strap to your face and put a $600+ smartphone in to use as a screen. Unlike the Rift, you won't be able to hook that up to your computer. It's only compatible with some smartphone games and 360° apps.

although I agree that is completely true what you say. it doesnt not correlate with what he is saying.
they have to pay CCP for the game, they have to pay Microsoft for the controller...so drop those items the 'at cost' price drops too
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
You can buy a good headset for your smart phone for under $200 (dirt cheap if you go with Google Cardboard) and connect it to your PC. that's the route I'm going to take. Maybe when more games adopt VR and it becomes more standard will I pay a more premium price for a nice headset. Maybe.

You can hook it to you PC, and you don't need to spend $600 on a smartphone, most people already have one and many are much cheaper than that for great quality.

Second in this age of the internet, you honestly think they will be able to blatantly lie about something like that and not be found out? Really?
Third you have the option to cancel your pre-order before they ship the units. Meaning you can reserve one now and wait for the reviews to come in, then decide to cancel later.
So what? They're lying about how much it costs to make their VR for... I don't know...Reasons?

Nah man, he is probably talking about the software development cost, aka him and his buddies getting paid insane amounts of money to sit around and develop it.
The hardware, no possible way. It is basically a raspberry pi with x2 extremely small OLED panels inside. You could get that shit for $120 and make your own once someone leaks their software and thats not even wholesale costs like he would have gotten.

Guy is profiteering, straight up.
not sure why you think this specific person is the one who is of a profiteering by deception type but that part aside.
It has 2 screen each of which are as nice as my cell phone screen which the phone that screen is in cost $600 and it only has 1

The screens in those phones don't cost 600$....lol
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
I spoke to my brother about it - he has a DevKit 2 and currently is working on a Kickstarter to develop his own VR game.
He said: "Oh man they just killed it. In a year when it's half the price it still won't be worth it".
I posted before - the price isn't what kills it for me. I would pay whatever, I mean, I have paid that much for video cards in the past - provided it has something I actually want to play. I haven't tried one out, or any of the software they are featuring, but right now nothing is really calling to me to make me want to spend the money.
Sure, they are neat and all, but you can't do squat with the goggles without something to actually run on them.
The screens in those phones don't cost 600$....lol
kind of like I knew you were going to say that but hoped that the rest was self explaintory
I know that.
so you want to talk about 3 usb cables now? maybe dissect each part per price into its own forum thread? or maybe you can infer what I was saying
It's very simple. They made a bundle thing to inflate the price point, I would also argue we are paying for all the DK1 people that get one for free.
They could easily sell just the rift at much lower price without selling at a loss. That was suppose to be the plan..to sell at cost to get the rift in as many homes as possible and make cash with software sales....guess facebook decided otherwise.
I have been very supportive and enthusiastic about the OR regardless of FB buying it out but I have to call BS when I see some.
It's like the hdmi cables you buy for 80$ if bought at the same store you buy your new widescreen tv that you can get for like 20$ at a different local shop...and it's the same brand/model in the same packaging etc etc

No it's not. HDMI cables have been around for a long time and have been standardized. VR is brand new and experimental in the consumer market to mass produce. The cost will be high like any new technology. Give it a few years and sure it will probably drop like most stuff. But I really don't think they're making a huge profit from this.
I think they're telling the truth. You can cancel your order before they ship anyways, so if all the reviews suck you're not out. It makes no sense for them to price it so high to 'fool' or screw people over because of greed.

First other companies have in the past took losses on hardware.
