Inflation based on consumer pricing only makes sense when the average person is actually wealthier than in the past. The average american is broke.
lol, you do know minimum wages have gone up? A cup of coffee may not be 5 cents any more but every average america can buy a cup, even a hobo? lol you killing me.
The average american is BROKE.
A $600 accessory is not something regular people can afford.
I am confused how people don't understand that some things are luxury items that they can't afford. Does everyone feel so entitled now that everything has to be available to them? Some company can actually release an "expensive" product to a group of people who can make the day 1 purchase. Live within your means. If you have the means to enjoy the newest and best technology then do so. No one flips out when someone releases a $100,000 sports car because "they can't afford it". I promise you they sell just fine to people who can.
The Oculus Rift is the highend "newest best thing". The Vive will be no different in this regard. There are plenty of cheaper options for you to try out/enjoy a VR experience. Just like how you can buy a Toyota instead of a McLaren. You get the experience of driving a car...just not the best experience.

Just curious but do you live in either America or Europe?

And in Europe almost no one can considering the unemployment rate.
Broke, does not stop people from spending. $600 bucks maybe to much for the average people now, but in a few years as prices go down. More people will buy into the tech. As more buy into into in the more affordable it will become. Back in 1977, most people could not afford $200 to buy the Atari 2600. Now just about everyone has a $400 console in their homes, a few phones worth $500+ and a few computers to boot. If the tech is worth using it will reach the common man one day.
I tell you exactly what is going to happen, Sony or another Industry powerhouse with the distribution, retail shelf space, and contracts will release exclusive content that only runs on the set they create, they will come into market $50 -$100 cheaper and dominate the market. Occulus will try dropping price and bundling some craptastic indie content but it will be too late.
Honestly someone just needs to get off their asses and make a holodeck, does not have to be a small home unit. Could be like a franchise situation, like gyms. Players have a monthly membership go to the holocenter and play/work out in the holodecks.
VR isn't going to get a second chance, it either succeeds in 2016 or it fails
3D didn't get a second chance either
maybe in 10 years they can try again if they fail
VR has been in development for years. It just so happens that technology now seems to meet the standards of acceptance needed for it to finally take hold.
It's a well-known fact that the price of technology drops as it becomes more readily available
Consoles used to cost $199 in the 90s. Now they cost $400.
Top of the line Voodoo 2 GPU cost $199 on launch. Now top of the line GPU are $600+.
(Quote from Google search) "That honor goes to the Atari 2600. Launched in September of 1977, the Atari 2600 cost $199.99. When taking into account the 258.9 percent inflation rate between 1977 and 2013, the Atari 2600 cost the equivalent of $771 today."
Costs of tech does come down. I can walk into a dollar store today and buy a walkmen for a few bucks. GPU used to have one CPU, now they have more cores. People make more money today then they did in 1990. The price for VR will come down.
Inflation based on consumer pricing only makes sense when the average person is actually wealthier than in the past. The average american is broke.
I don't think you understand what inflation is. Minimum wage in 1990 was $3.80 so your dollar had more purchasing power. Minimum wage now is $7.25. So the system is set up in a way where you can buy pretty much the same things you could in 1990 based on the minimum wage. It isn't based on how wealthy people are. It is based on the cost of producing goods/profit of said goods. Your dollar buys less eggs now than it did in 1990 because those eggs cost more to get into the stores, and they have to make enough money to cover the increase in wages and required government benefits.
VERY VERY VERY VERY FEW PEOPLE in 1990 had luxury items such as the newest home console. You like to throw around that price point from the 90s, but when minimum wage was 3.80 it was hard to go buy a 50 dollar Nintendo game(yes they were 50 dollars in the 90s).
You had to work 13 hours on minimum wage just to afford a single Nintendo game, and you still had to pay to live/eat. Now you have to work 8 hours at minimum wage to afford a 59.99 video game.
Stop pretending that people don't make more now per hour per cost of goods than they did in the 90s. I was there for it.

how much does the average smart phone cost?
and how did you post what you just posted without thinking it thru a little?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
3D is tacked onto TV sets because it costs nothing to do so, not because 3D was successful, it wasn't.
what? that doesnt make any sense on multiple levels I dont even know where to start. Re-read what you said and think hard on it, its a loop you have create

Fact #1: 3D TV sales increase each year. Fact #2: More and more movies come out in 3D.
BUT according to some self proclaimed experts here, 3D is a failure.
The bullshit you can read here is always amusing after a hard day at work.
Uhm what?
Even Sony said 3D was dead, they even defended VR by saying it's not like 3D:
lol...of course they did because its NOT which is something I have been saying for year.
one of the hints? peripheral vision and head tracking and yes those two seemingly minor things make a HUGE difference in what we are talking about here

The average american is broke because they feel they need to have things they don't need at all. You don't need cable/dish. You don't need netflix. You don't need a PC. You don't need a video game console. Hell, you don't even need a TV. You definitely don't need an Oculus Rift. After you cover living expenses you can decide what you can and can't afford. Americans are broke because there are people willing to buy an Oculus Rift on credit because they just HAVE TO HAVE ONE! Entitlement is breaking peoples wallets.
People are breaking themselves so they can have that new shiny. When you have an Iphone 5, and you go buy an Iphone 6 on a credit card because you need to have the newest product...it's your own fault you only have "less than $1,000 in savings".
You add all these statistics without taking into account that people are doing it to themselves, and you are saying that the Oculus should be cheaper so MORE PEOPLE will buy something they absolutely do not need. Which only contributes to their "less than $1,000 in savings".
So....mounting opposition to your position...lets pick on something else and hope no one remembers what you was talking about.......
lol, mounting opposition, everyone knows 3D failed, you have to be a deceptive liar to even try to argue otherwise
no one is buying 3D glasses, I have never in my life seen anyone in front of a TV with 3D glasses
nothing except a few rare movies are broadcasted in 3D
Just because everyone doesn't want one in their home, does not mean its a failure. Even being 10th best TV option in a home is a market. Graph above shows for one vendor 3D TV sales are up 400% since 2010. Also 3D tech is more then just TVs. Keep shoveling. You may make a point yet.

What one is it? It failed in 2016 and no second chance or it gets a second chance in 2026? I also got news for ya, 3D tech is doing just fine.

The fact Oculus Rift fans are trying to argue, against any reason, that stereoscopic 3D was a success....reeks of desperation.
VR has already failed.
