Blizzard will fire 90% of the staff running the game because of the lost income, and from there any guess is as good as any other. Will the remaining staff hold the game running? Will the remaining staff cries and let's the game died?
As to the games you list...I have no ideas about AC1, but saying EQ will outlive WoW is like saying the sky is blue and there are clouds in it. Thank you for stating the obvious.
Heck, assuming EQ would not be rentable one day (which I don't think will happen anytime soon in the worst case scenario...maybe never happen), I am pretty sure it could fall under governmental laws about folklore protections and get federal support financing. I can see the US government or the Californian government taking the EQ servers rather than letting them close. In facts, I would wager that SoE have already this all planned carefully to show everyone how great and careful they are about the community properties!
WoW...I don't see how Blizzard could convince any governmental agency that this deserve to be maintained with publics funds. EQ creates a new trend, they lead the way. WoW is the last opportunist in line.
Ultima, prolly would benefit from the same status as EQ if done carefully the days it don't bring enough money for the company who runs it...

You can speak on and on and on about how AC1 and UO are gonna go down so soon. This is nothing I haven't heard myself a million times since about 2001. It is nothing but shallow predictions that seem to think better graphics or newer game = better.
A lot has happened since 2001. Right now, 5 years later, buisness has drastically changed for the main companies behind UO, AC, and EQ. The mmorpg games may still be great, but on the business side, things are not going well. The fact remains AC1 is still not being seriously advertised. The current fact is that back in 2001, EA did not have 2 failed mmorpgs. Right now in 2006 they do. Back in 2001 SOE was doing flawless. Right now in 2006, SOE is in much dire straits (SWG has lost 2/3 of its total subscribers, EQ2 is not doing as well as they wish - led to them flying leaders of various guilds out to SOE HQ, all expenses paid!). WoW obviously never existed back in 2001. The IDEA of a mmorpg having over 5 million accounts within 1 YEAR of release? Litterally unheard of!
People STILL do not understand how insane the implications are on the business end when a mmorpg is able to get 100k accounts, 200k accounts. This is insane true profits! It litterally is FREE MONEY! Now up it to 400k accounts! It is beyond insanity! Now.... up it to... 1 million accounts! Try insanity to the 10th squared! That is how much true profit is being made. Again, EQ grossed 1 BILLION after reaching a solid 400k accounts and needing to re-coup roughly 40 million first before making a true profit. It took EQ roughly 2-3 years to reach that point. WoW took roughly 1 year to reach.... 5 Million accounts. If EVERYONE stopped playing WoW, Blizzard could still keep the game up and running, and still not get hit with a loss. As I stated before, the amount of true profit Blizzard has made = the amount of profits other mmorpgs will make in 10 years of being out! And WoW has only been out for a year.
I am not talking about graphics, I am talking strictly about business, about money, about the bottom line, about true profit. About what the moneymen, the investors, see when they get the financial reports.
In reality however, the only shallowness in the AC1, UO, EQ, and WoW group of games is WoW. WoW is a pretty, but shallow game that leaves gamers bored to death and asking for something more after only a few months, never wishing to return. And this even happens with an 11 year old girl.
I fully agree with you that all those other games have more depth, more content, than WoW. The main reason is they have now been out for a solid 5 years, UO even longer, and thus have had plenty of time to have far more content than 1 year old WoW.
WoW will crash and burn sometime within the next 1 to 2 years.
Oh man, oh man. You KNOW I'm going to have to save this webpage? Today is Thursday, March 9th, 2006. You are now predicting WoW will die on March 9, 2007?!? That WoW will die on March 9, 2008? Based on.... that you yourself are now tired of playing WoW? You are 100% right in whatever your personal tasts are. That is why I said 1-2 pages back to simply find another mmorpg you enjoy, and play it! Have FUNNN! Leave WoW alone. You no longer like WoW. That is good! But you dislike the idea that 5 million other players like WoW? And want to rant because of this? Let them be. I can't stand Britney Spears. To me she cannot sing. She is getting by only on her looks and zero talent. But millions of other people still buy her songs. I let it go. I don't rant about her. I don't complain about her. I find other music I like, and buy it instead.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and I can almost promise you all that WoW will take a VERY hard fall (in subscriber numbers) in the not too distant future.
It does not matter. WoW will never 100% die. It is impossible. Again, it has 5 million accounts. EQ in its heyday had close to 500k accounts, aka a half million. WoW could lose 90% of its subscribers, and it would still be doing better than EQ, AC, and UO were doing in their prime. I am sorry to inform you of this, but in the end, mmorpgs are a business. It is the money that counts. WoW has generated sooo much money, that it is in no danger at all of ever getting shut down "in the not too distant future". It does not matter if ONE person were left playing WoW, it still would not suffer a loss. WoW has not only re-couped its investment money, it has litterally made "too much money".
It won't matter, because it will still be a HUGE success to Blizzard. I'm sure that even Blizzard knows full well WoW won't be a 10 or 12 year mmo like UO and EQ. That isn't what they wanted. They, instead, designed and produced a super stream-lined mmo to bring in lots of money as fast as possible.

UO and EQ are not 10 year, 12 year, mmorpgs. You litterally are doubling how long they have been around. Let's say for arguement's sake that yes, WoW is the worse mmorpg ever made in history. Yes? So? And? From the business end, it is the most successfull mmorpg in history. It has destroyed UO, AC, and EQ all combined, and more. EQ maxed at roughly 400k accounts. AC maxed out at very roughly 100k accounts. UO maxxed out at roughly 300k accounts. That is a total of... 800k accounts combined?!? LESS than 1/5th of what WoW has?

Xplororor, I hate to chip at a great, convincing post for the validity of WoW's success but to say that UO and EQ are not 10 or 12 year mmos is rather silly. Ultima Online was released in September of 1997. Everquest was released in March of 1999, and Asherons Call was released not much later in October of 1999.
Next year, Ultima Online will celebrate its 10th year of online service. In three years, Everquest and Asherons Call will celebrate the same party.
You think Asherons Call might be going down anytime soon? Really? After researching the Turbine website I find this recent announcement from AC's own producer: "As for our plans for Asheron's Call, I'll reiterate that there are no plans to turn off the servers. We as a team are committed to continuing to develop our ongoing stories, provide entertaining content, and add cool features to the game. We have some fun and exciting ideas that I think people will enjoy." He also promises continuing monthly updates and that the support for this game is as big as ever.
We all know EQ isn't going anywhere soon
I think zaxx may have a very good argument. These three games are going to be very hard to outlast, especially with a game like WoW that simply gets old too fast. In fact, they may all owe WoW a huge thank you, when a huge percentage of original WoW players likes the idea of WoW, but looks for something more and ends up playing games like AC or UO for years down the road. I do agree that WoW is about the most shallow mmo I've ever played and that UO and EQ (ive never really played AC) are very content rich mmos by contrast.
Seriously. Go through this websites members own reviews of two games... World of Warcraft and say Asherons Call. If you seriously go through about ten pagees of reviews on each of these games, here is about the most common thing you'll read for each:
---------------
World of Warcraft common review:
"WoW is a great game. Just do not expect to play it for years. It's fun for 2-3 months of casual gaming, after that you are pretty through everything."
So many statements such as this over and over. Oh any statements about it being made for 8 year olds is pretty common to read too. Hmmm, wonder why? Couldn't be because of it's complete lack of depth could it?
------------------
Asherons Call common review:
"The most immersive MMORPG I've played. The story is amazing and intricate. The world is mammoth and seamless! Most of all, this is THE most fun game I have ever played in my life. I will be playing this game until the servers are de-commissioned"
This is BY FAR the most common type of review given for this game.
Lol Wow Is a Great Game i have played it like 12 Hours straight for 3 months until i got bored of it literally but, now its coming back to me , its just like smoking, you can't quit lol (well hard to quit) anywho... Wow will probably last till i'm 20 at least.. but when Star Trek Online comes outa the lab Wow should lose at least half or 3/4th of its customers well thats my prediction cuz I got like hooked just by reading the FAQ o.O anywho Wow will last longer than EQ And those other crappy games you named Oh and one more thing.. WOW is low sys req so thats probably why it has more than EQ . oh and Ultima ONline looks like Runescape i wonder whoes gonna sub for that ahaha

lol, this is about the only reason zax may be dead wrong in his predictions. 3 or 4 million spoiled 10 year old kids who think that wow is the bestest game ever and that "all those other crappy games are crap" even though they've never played EQ or Asherons Call and realize just how much fun/depth they are missing. Their mommies and daddies will continue to pay for them to sit on a WoW server and play in the McDonalds kiddie world saying over and over that mcdonalds is so much better then real camping, fishing, and boating. (Wow is so much better then EQ and Ash Call.) After all combatpoo told you all flat out that Everquest (1999) has much steeper system requirements then does WoW (2004), rotf.
zaxtor99 I just want you to know that I also think so. Unless they really lifts up the game. WoW is great, but it's not a game you play for years. Maby many people join, and that would be the thing that would keep it alive for a long time. But I doubt generations will stay for years.

I think we all uplift WoW to a platform where it really doesnt deserve to be. WoW isnt even great - after playing it for 8 or 9 months and quitting I can safely say that WoW is NOT a good MMORPG - at my standards. Comparing it to EQ, AC, UO it doesnt compare.
It would be accurate to say that WoW is the pinnacle of your current, average carebear-ish MMO. It has very restricting classes that give you 1, boring role to fill - many instances and grinding which dulls down the game making it harder for you to stay awake at night; deaths that turn you into a ghost with no penalty....you die. who cares? Nothing happends; and of course, unfufilling PVP. PVP is boring, I have to wait to participate, and no real FFA. Its boring.
At to the OP, even though I would love to agree with you, I dont think these classics will outlast WoW. WoW has set the standard for many of the next generations of MMOs, and has 6 million+ subscribers. People will become ignorant and I fear soon forget the real fun and immersion of the games that came before these new pieces of crap. I doubt that we will see a classic based game like that with real character custimization, real PVP, real teamwork, real fun. WoW has taken out the fun in games and placed in them the machinery of character classes and the almighty GRIND.

Why dont u just drop it, I dont understand why numbers matter, I like full servers but if its not fun your most likely not going to drool on your credit card and subscribe.
And I wanted to say unless EQ starts a classic server with only kunark, old skool players like myself that really were Campers and Fishermen of that game will play it again, until then I will play WoW.

I see what you are saying. In a way, we both are right. I agree it is extreemly unlikely UO will die before reaching its 10th year. BUT it still has not officially reached it's 10th year. Heck, UO has not even reached it's 9th year yet. (Not until Sept of 2006.) EQ, and AC are far, far, further away from being "10 year, and 12 year mmorpgs." But back to the main subject of this thread, which is not how long AC, EQ, and UO will last, but that they will outlast WoW. Meaning that if UO, AC, and EQ made it to 20 years, they will outlast WoW even if WoW makes it to 19 years. I am stating, with the business evidence backing me up, that WoW is in far less danger of being shut down than those other mmorpgs. That either WoW will outlast them, OR, that ALL of them - WoW, UO, AC, EQ, will ALL never, ever, get shut down.
You think Asherons Call might be going down anytime soon? Really? After researching the Turbine website I find this recent announcement from AC's own producer: "As for our plans for Asheron's Call, I'll reiterate that there are no plans to turn off the servers. Holy cow, now go check out the AC2 forums at this site, and read all the treads on pages 1-5. The SAME company said the exact sqme thing about AC2. Did you know they even released expansions right before they shut down the game? Did you know they STILL sell AC2 to stores, even AFTER they officially announced it was getting shut down? LOL! The KEY word in your quote is "He promises"..... Mr. Reality could care less about what anyone says. Mr. Reality only cares about one thing - hardcore business. The hardcore bottom line. AC1 si currently struggling. And again, Turbine still to this day refuses to make any serious attempt at advertising the game to draw in new blood.
We all know EQ isn't going anywhere soon
I agree. And stated so, and why. But there is no way EQ1 will outlast WoW. IMHO both games will never, ever, never, get shut down.
I think zaxx may have a very good argument.
He has spoken and made a prediction. Based on.... business facts? Based on his current personal dislike of WoW because he is now bored of it. His prediction? That on March 9th, 2007 ... WoW will cease to exist. His 2nd prediction? That on March 9th 2008, WoW will cease to exist.

second thing, why talk about this ? do you think if we come here and say WoW is good and all other games suck that blizzard will give each a million ? or otherwise, if we say DAOC rocks and WoW sucks that mythic will give us a million?
you people, you ignorant people, including me, stop talking about these useless topics and senceles subjects, stop this ignorance that has befell on our age, it's realy not good for your health.
there's absolutely no need to brag about WoW having 5 million players or NCsoft having 7 million subscribers, there's absolutely no need, it won't make you any richer or any famous, on the otherhand, it will only make you poorer, because you're spending money on both internet and playing games.
but let me tell you something, games are made to entertain people, they're not meant to be discussed in this matter, WOW SUCKS EQ RULES DAOC IS SHIT EVE IS THE BOMB UO IS EVERYTHING, nono, you pick the game suitable for you, you pick a game you enjoy the most, and play it, if you play a game that you don't enjoy, there's no need to come here saying it sucks, because there are more than 1000 people who love it, and you're only .001% of the ppl who hate it, so basicly it WON'T FUCKING MATTER YOU MORONS.

Who says we think chatting about this will get us a million bucks or make us richer or even make a difference? Lots of people around the world chat about the weather too, but it doesn't mean that they think they can change the weather... they still talk about it! People can talk about whatever they desire, and you coming along calling everyone who talks about a subject you care less about a moron certainly doesn't change anything either. Well, except maybe we might think you are a freak who needs mental help for letting a forum thread piss u off so much, lol.
Radlin you're so sad, not understanding what i meant is a proof of your lack of vision and understanding, from the comments i've read, everyone is just argueing which game has more players playing, and based on the numbers of players each company have, they're the better games.
it's exactly the same thing that my friends told me yesterday, that my character i created in the game is ugly, when their characters look much more uglier, get a life man.
I am so sick of reading folks here repost Blizzard's propaganda.
WoW does NOT have 6 million paying subscribers.
Players in Asia play in places called Internet cafes. Why, well frankly because many parts of Asia are still stuck in 3rd world conditions without even electricity in some cases. The majority of these people dont have home computers in their houses.
Also, the Web is strictly limited by many asian countries. Even google is facing a banning by china unless they redo their search engine (gotta keep their population ignorant of outside info). Thousands of sites people in freedom loving countries take for granted are not accessible to chinese and other asian non-democratic nations.
Asian players therefore go to these internet cafes as many are run illegally and give access to forbidden sites. These internet cafes sell game time for pennies an hr. A dollar's worth of time lasts for hundreds of game hours.
Its nearly impossible to track these players as they come and go. However, to count them like we count other countries with monthly subscribers is plain misleading. I guarantee you WoW doesnt have 6 million players paying $15 a month. More like 1-2 million (from north america, europe, australia)paying $15 and 4-5 million dropping a dollar or 2 each month.

Sorry admriker, but this whole post doesn't even make sense as your claim that WoW doesn't have 6 million+ subscribers. Ofcourse they do, atleast that's what they are reporting to several trustworthy websites.
You state that in Asia, most people and gamers use internet cafes. From what I have read on this subject, I would certainly agree with you. So, most WoW players in Asia and probably Taiwan etc play from internet cafes. The internet cafes charge those people to use the internet, not to access WoW! They are, afterall, "internet" cafes... not WOW cafes. So once Mr Asian dude is in an internet cafe on the net, he still has to access the WoW servers. He would have to pay his monthly fee to do so, or I'm sure Blizzard would not let him play, and therefore not count him as one of their 6 million active subscribers. The cost of Asians to access the internet is totally irrelevant.
I doubt a reputable company like Blizzard would LIE to the press and LIE to its share holders, not to mention its managers would get into serious trouble and lose their jobs.
Remember these press releases are also designed for the stock market as well.
Face facts Wow has 5.5 million subscribers, has blown away all competition.
Its game is very good, some people say it lasts about 3 months, true if you just want to get to 60th and give up.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Would also like to add I tried EQ again (free 21 days) I downloaded the latest patches, tried the game for about 5 minutes (was a EQ Crack user for 3 years) and thought "god this game is old", turned it off.
I doubt many people will switch from an enjoyable game like WoW to an ancient looking game like EQ or AC.

Actually about the internet cafe's it's not just people with accounts who happen to be playing in a cafe because blizzard even shows them as something different on their website. I'm not sure how it works but it's not exactly what we are getting here....well not we i'm not part of the juggernaut pre schooler.

BIG DIFFERNCE.

Typical WoW fan. Nothing further your honor.
- Zaxx
lol, this is about the only reason zax may be dead wrong in his predictions.

And I don't want to hear anything about "I don't believe in vampires" because *I* don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what *I* saw is ******* vampires! "

You guys must not have lives to argue about MMORPGS, you sound like a bunch of 9yr olds arguing about Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh (whatever its called).
You may proceed 9yr olds

to everyone who participated in posting their comments in this topic, including me.
have you guys noticed something? how long you guys talk, and however you talk and keep talking, no matter what, no matter how, you will not convince each others.
second thing, why talk about this ? do you think if we come here and say WoW is good and all other games suck that blizzard will give each a million ? or otherwise, if we say DAOC rocks and WoW sucks that mythic will give us a million?
you people, you ignorant people, including me, stop talking about these useless topics and senceles subjects, stop this ignorance that has befell on our age, it's realy not good for your health.
there's absolutely no need to brag about WoW having 5 million players or NCsoft having 7 million subscribers, there's absolutely no need, it won't make you any richer or any famous, on the otherhand, it will only make you poorer, because you're spending money on both internet and playing games.
but let me tell you something, games are made to entertain people, they're not meant to be discussed in this matter, WOW SUCKS EQ RULES DAOC IS SHIT EVE IS THE BOMB UO IS EVERYTHING, nono, you pick the game suitable for you, you pick a game you enjoy the most, and play it, if you play a game that you don't enjoy, there's no need to come here saying it sucks, because there are more than 1000 people who love it, and you're only .001% of the ppl who hate it, so basicly it WON'T FUCKING MATTER YOU MORONS.
ok i'm done, thanks for your time.
... feel better?
Who really cares if they have 5 million or 5, when you're a whinny cry baby that hates a game for no other reason than it's popular, you don't need real facts to complain about anyway.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
