It can be pretty heart wrenching, especially if you’re still firmly part of the community when it happens. Still, it’s fun to remember the good times, so let’s take a look back at some of the best (now shut down) MMOs of all time.

Of that list, I can only imagine fans of CoH and SWG still wanting their game back after all these years.

I'm sure people would love it back but due to how old both of the games are may not get that many people keep it alive with fix and updates unless they do what Turbine did with Asheron Call 1 or 2 just keep the game running with no updates or much of support.

most predictable list of all-time, didn't even need to open the thread

The Maxtrix was the only surprise on the list

I miss SWG and MxO. The only thing I didn't like about MxO was the missions. They were so repetitive and boring.

Lineage 1 for me. The english version was shutdown, but the game is still thriving in Korea and other countries. The only way to play it now is private servers. They should re-release on steam.

Has anyone ever tried to "recreate" an MMO, but, with a different engine? The game has to have all the features from the original that made the game great.

SWG could be recreated like it was pre-NGE. Couldn't it? The only obstacle would be Lucas Arts I guess?

What about Vanguard: Saga of Heroes?

To be fair for some gamers, certain updates/expansions might have been the same as shutting down the servers. Ultima Online comes to mind and in some degree WoW Vanilla.

Tabula Rasa was a really fun MMO. Warhammer I wish would have been developed by someone else. The Matrix had some really good ideas but I just could not get into it. Great list. I would have put Asheron's Call 2 on that list. Under-rated game imho

Never played it, but I've heard good things!

You and me both! Nothing has filled the void left by CoH for me.

    On the list:

    Obviously CoH.

If TMO was back, I would try it.

People are currently playing warhammer online.  Not sure how they have been so public about it and not get shutdown...

I wouldn't be interested in SWG or TR.

    They're called private servers.
But they're using the same engine? I'm talking about recreating the whole game but with a different engine, different animations, etc etc, or when you say private servers, does that mean they have recreated the game on, let's say the Hero Engine?

hehe- but best?...hmm i cringe at their lack of content and recent cryptic announcements. and that paragraph you talk abt war online= sounds too familiar recently.

Favorite MMO that was closed down: SWG.

Favorite class from a closed down MMO: Warrior Priest from Wahammer Online.

I still feel Vanguard launched in a different state then the bug ridden, hole in the ground mess it was at launch would have been an amazing game. Tabula Rasa I forgot about but I really did enjoy it. Matrix was really cool, think if it released at a different time and day it could have had a different type of success.

I really liked Tabula Rasa and IMO Shadowbane wasnt a bad game either.
