Is anyone here familiar with the CCG industry. If so I have one word for you.
POKEMON
Same generation. Same meteoric rise. Same fall??? I worked at a comic shop for several years and this argument reminded me of the relationship of POKEMON,Yu Gi Oh, etc.... Vs a much older yet more complex game MtG.
On a side note: MtG is still played I believe. I stopped working there two years ago.
Originally posted by metalcore I doubt a reputable company like Blizzard would LIE to the press and LIE to its share holders, not to mention its managers would get into serious trouble and lose their jobs. Remember these press releases are also designed for the stock market as well. Face facts Wow has 5.5 million subscribers, has blown away all competition. Its game is very good, some people say it lasts about 3 months, true if you just want to get to 60th and give up.
Even if WOW only had half of 5.5 million, they wpuld still blow every other game out of the market besides Lineage 2 who has about 2.5 million. Other than those 2.....it looks like dogs fighting over leftovers.
I just dont see why people care or why they feel the need to downgrade a game. So its doing really really well and you dont like it? So since you dont like it, you have to go on a crusade against the all powerfull WOW machine? Just seems really silly and childish.
I think people feel the need to bash the game are thinking they gain some sort of credibility amongst their peers. People always try to be the outsider so they can bash something people like and look hardcore. I'm not a big fan of WOW myself. I played it for awile and I had fun. I got bored, sure. But I won't bash it.
If they have as many people playing as they do, they must be doing something right. The people that write the wow playerbase off as mostly new to mmog gamers make me laugh....Well duh. Not many other games have had that many subscribers, so naturally there are going to be people new to the genre. That's not a bad thing, new people means more people to play with.
The truth of the whole thing is WOW will be around for years to come. As will EQ and maybe AC...I would think UO should die sometime before any of them. AC will be the next one out of this group, then EQ. That is only my prediction though. I have nothing against any of the games I've mentioned.
..and this defines the entire argument against WoWs longevity and value in the MMO industry
World of Warcraft, the NearBeer of the internets...
By the by, I dont say this because I want to fit in with WoW bashers qotsa, I say it because I played wow for a year and in retrospect think it was a crappy MMO. It is a personally hands on formed opinion they earned from me as a customer.
Frankly, I have said time and again that I am glad 5+million people like the game, it will keep them out of the good MMOs.
With the money Blizzard is raking in now, they probably have enough capital to fund a few low/no profit WOW servers indefinately. Probably could use the AO business model, play free, pay for expansions. Anyways, I've been to Korea on business before... and I have no doubt in my mind that half the country are diehard Blizzard fans. They even have a TV channel that's 90% Starcraft/Warcaft competitions. If Starcraft is still the rage in Korea, that market alone can support WOW for a long time to come.
Okay, I personally hate WoW but one of the reason why it will probably be here for a while, posted by Aseenus:

Though, the top contenders in MMORPGs (as in the companies that will try to grab the market of MMOs by offering many to choose from the most) in the upcoming years has got to be Ncsoft and Turbine. Though Codemasters will get a lot from Europe as they are hosting a lot of MMOs in Europe.
NcSoft has 5 MMOs currently running with subscriptions, 2 currently in beta, an expansion to Guild Wars, and a space MMO that they are publishing.

That is so true, it's actually good that WoW has all those people, so we don't have to deal with them. Those who are playing WoW are neither in-deep roleplayers. Would not fit in RP games like EQ for an example.
If they are deep RP'ers well time to leave! There are tons of better RP games out there.

all be it i despise the lack luster turd called wow. It will be around. Now them shrinking down to maybe 5 servers eventually sure. Lets face it not many mmos have died. Horizons still going shadowbane still going. I really can only think of one game that died mourning if ya call it that i called it a con act and they stole peoples money.
Wow is like a candyland to other mmos. The 3+ age group. As a player gets more skilled in mmos they go to a more grown up game. I have no problem with blizzard getting the preschoolers involved in mmos.
Theres no such thing as a good/bad MMO or Game, it's all opinion and choice. If you have to voice your hate for a game or it's players, than im sorry to say your a sad, sad person...
Now why isn't this topic dead yet...
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
Saying WOW will end up dying before any other MMO is, at best, a very shakey prediction. Most all MMOs that have come out are still around, and even the old MUDs and MUSHs are still kicking with their loyal communities (which may not number in the thousands, but still have enough to justify them existing).
WOW will probably be around as long as EQ ends up sticking it out. But it definitely is going to experience a shrinking playerbase as new MMOs take the field, and people get tired of WOW as it is. New expansions and patches can't save a game from disinterest forever.
That said, look forward to WOW2 within 5-6 years. The money invested in WOW has definitely been made over exponentially, so development of a new game using new technology is certainly a good probability.

Go Ncsoft, would be AMAZING for the Station Pass!
