Well I consider myself at LEAST 99% of the MMO comminity all by myself, and what I say goes (you other 1% shut up you're inferior k thanks...). All MMOs MUST have PvP to keep the game fun and challenging, and it better be open pvp with punishments for death!!!

    /end sarcasm...

But really, everything I said after the me being 99% yada yada is the truth, open pvp or bust!

    PvP + PvE = 2 game elements

I would rather have more, than less. One without the other is less.

I think there are a lot of players who are afraid of PvP, but don't like to admit it, even to themselves. Auto Assault has an interesting take on it - they're trying to make it consensual, by making duplicate zones, where one is PvP, and the other isn't, with no other differences. You can transfer back and forth between the two at any time, except during combat. It's also faction vs faction, not FFA, and there's NO death penalty.

And yet, what's interesting is how during testing of the PvP zone, the vast majority of players won't step foot in the PvP layer, even though that's about as safe as PvP can possibly get. The PvE side gets pretty crowded, while the PvP side is deserted. I'd spent many hours levelling in the PvP side, and not once even saw an enemy player.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Who cares what the percentage is.

The only person whos opinion matters is the one playing the game.

If its not a primarily open-pvp game, I'm not touching it.

I would say the vast majority of carebears dont pvp because their egos are huge, they cant stand being beaten. They want to kill dumb AI all day long to feel better about the rest of their lives.

    PVPers enjoy a challenge.

yeah who cares what the percentage is. I didn't even answer the poll. I'll take that back actually, game publishers probably care

I see games that had sworn off pvp like EQ making a big deal about it now. Means that they see a market there, so the percentage is substantial.

To be honest the attempts of pvp in mmos have been abysmal so I would not expect much of the community to go for it. But I think if mmorpg companies come along with more imagination pvp will be a much more desired option. You have to look at fps' or something like warcraft 3 mods to see Pvp is desired but the current attempts are really ancient in design and things like 'ganking' should not even be an issue in a real pvp game which puts people of PvP in current mmorpgs.

I think you're right. I like Guild Wars for the quests, graphics and social interaction, but when I PvP I always get utterly and completely trashed in 5 seconds. Therefore, I leave PvP to those who really love it. I'd like to PvP some more, but it won't be in Guild Wars, just too many crazy templates out there I can't compete with cuz' I made my characters out of love and dedication, not for the purpose of saying  " OWNED!!!! NOOB!!!!! "

I like fair PVP, such as arenas or some sort of clan war system. What I don't like is getting ganked anywhere just because someone enjoys their PVP. I don't think it's fun running around trying to finish a quest or get to another location and have some random person 10 levels higher than you kill you while you're busy with a mob. If I wanted that experience, I'd just go to an area where the mobs are too tough for me and run through them.

What kind of theory is that? I mean ... what? You put a label on a lot of people (ok, you didn't put it there) and say "they are like this, and that is stupid." The biggest problem with PvP, and the best reason to avoid it, is found among those who desire PvP. You see, among them are found some serious ego strokers who might fit your description a lot better than several of the people you consider carebears. And those particular people don't enjoy a challenge so much as they enjoy the ability to whack helpless targets with higher numbers, stats and loot. They play the PvP game as a one way kick-those-below-you machine. And they brag about it.

The challenge these people encounter in their daily bashings is about as great as if I some day decided I wanted to beat up a little kid, only, if I did that in the real world, it would have consequences. This particular group of PvP'ers find an excellent opportunity to be violent AND somewhat cowardly in their choice of targets, without having to accept any negative consequences.

I want PvP, and I want PvP where these people can't go about their bussiness without getting substantially whacked in return, so that they actually experience some manner of setback if they make a wrong step. That would give them a challenge (and somehow I doubt they would enjoy it) and even out the competing grounds, so that the others could also get a challenge. Either that, or they can redesign the "Log in" button. I think it should say "Thank you sir, may I have another?" (optional for newbies after first logon).

Nah. PvP can do so much for a game. But those who make the game must keep in mind that EVERYBODY is equally the hero in these games, and keep in mind that there will always be newbies who should also enjoy the game. Some say "I've worked hard to get here, he should too, you're not supposed to enjoy the game until level X..." A game should be enjoyable at all stages. At least, most of them should. Especially when there's really no need to make the low level experience annoying and worklike.

Give the numbers of players on a side more significance than their stats, and don't let magical gear make or break a warrior. Give the game some dynamic content (conquest, construction, destruction, and possibly something that makes death the slightest bit meaningful). Give me a good PvP design and I'll be there to play it. UO is better than much out there, but it isn't right. The entire game must be good, by the way, and the PvP must cooperate well with the rest of the game.

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)

  • MMOCrazyMMOCrazy Member Posts: 53

    PvP all the way.

In PvE, you know what the other NPC is going to do... No challenge.

PvP, there is some challenge to it to make it fun. Plus trying to reach the best is really interesting like in Lineage 2 where everyone tries to reach the best.

That is why I like to play Lineage 2, yes there are many cheaters BUT being in guilds/alliances and trying to gain the castles and the power.

People believe that they don't like PvP because they don't know what good PvP is all about. The majority of the complaints that I see in these kinds of threads are anti-badroleplay, NOT anti-PvP.

If you don't enjoy being ganked, being griefed, being slaughtered by your supposed allies, watching evil players help good players, watching good players help evil players, etc. you are anti-badroleplay.

With that said, I can tell you that no game has managed to solve this problem. PvP done right would be more realistic, more challenging, more fun. PvP being slapped onto a game developed for PVE play is terrible, hence the number of gamers that disavow it.

Don't be so quick to attack the PvP supporters. Attack the bad roleplayers that play PvP games.

I like to see pvp included in rpg games.

I personally don't have a lot of intrest in it, but many people do. I believe it adds an extra element of gameplay, and the more things for people to do in any gameworld, the better.

PvP is cheap and successful way to add a lot of content/replay value to a game.

True and dedicated PvP games however are my preference. I like PvP and I own plenty of PvP games. I do not feel that an MMORPG lends itself well to this format. My competative streak is sated elsewhere.

Call me crazy. But that sounds FRIGHTENINGLY alot what people do in PvE. The whole, "whack helpless targets when they have no chance of winning."

I assumed you meant pvp combat rather then pvp competition.

    Thus I chose 1-25%.

You see, I like pvp combat, but I absolutely require pvp competition.

Sadly enough, most people distuinguish the two from eachother, while the former is just one possible form of the latter. Any game I will like needs to enable the combat part, but if that's the only one I still won't like the game much.

Freeform compatitin is where it's at, economic, political, and combat.

I have no idea what percentage of the market likes PvP. I think PvP is something MMOs should have, but haven't seen it implemented in a way that makes me want to try it yet.

I get my competitive fix from fighting games, and first person shooters. Oh, and real time strategy games too when they actually have strategy involved beyond the zerg rush.

When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

Personaly, I enjoy PvP, to an extent. I do not like to be forced into playing someone's idea of a fun game. If I log on to do a quest or a mission or just farm for some loot/money, I do not like to be interfered with. However, there are times when I sign on just to PvP.

I'm not a big fan of games with open PvP (EVE is an exception because it's a great game) simply because, more often then not, open PvP leads to griefing. Which is something I try to avoid being the victim of in my limited playing time. I like games that offer a choice. WoW is an example of a game with a choice. It does have it's own problems though, which I won't get to in this post.

Games with serious death penalties are also something I try to avoid (again, EVE is an exception). Simply because being a casual gamer, it takes much longer for me to get back to where I was before I died.

As far as percentages, I really can't say. I do know that the majority of games I've played had very low population on open PvP servers, if those existed. Which leads me to believe that the majority of the people are either like me and like to have a choice, or people who dislike PvP altogether.

Very true, even in CSS there are pve "zombie" games. Every game needs a bit of both.

I dont like pvp at all. I can't stand it for more than 10 min.  If that makes me a "carebear", then so be it.

I disagree.  I don't like PvP for a few reasons.  Mostly because I am just not a very competitive person.  I also like adventure more.  I like a good story.  I like socializing.  I like all those things more than just running around in a crazy, lagged up, monkey warfare environment.

I could counter your argument by saying I think people who like PvP are mad because they're too scared to join the military and actually do some real fighting.  If you like a good challenge then go fight some fundamentalist wackos and clean up the world.

i really like pvp, but the only problem with it is that people think you can have real pvp with level/class games. ie WoW

real pvp only works with skill based games, unless some uber dev creates some system... till then yay for darkfall and rakion ^_^

well if you like pve so much why don't you go out and kill real animals? what kind of argument is that?

IMO trying to kill another player is ALOT harder than trying to kill any AI mob.  People like different aspects of MMOs, i personally like them all. Social, political, economic, adventure and PvP. It doesn't make me any more or less of a gamer than any one else. However, the games that are out today are seriously lacking in PvE content IMO.

FYI i like playing MMOs alot, but if there was a real fire breathing dragon in my front yard, my ass would be running out the back door. Does that mean i don't like PvE?
