Read the last sentence.  They shifted to virtual reality.

3D tv is entirely different than VR, since VR is either 180 or 360 degree viewpoints, with motion tracking.

While it's not a must for me, my brother bought my mother a large 3d tv and I have to say, while I wouldn't want to watch all my movies that way, it was a lot of fun. He actually got enough glasses for everyone.

Certain movies work well with the 3d.

Won't that be true for VR too?  Except I expect VR headsets to cost a lot more than 3d glasses.

Well I'm assuming that OP is talking about 3D as far as gaming goes because of the mention of VR. If that is the case then 3D died years ago. NVIDIA has not allowed anyone to buy (yes you have to pay around $40 >:)) their 3D driver for about a year now. They finally were forced to make a trial driver that only last 3 months.

Barely any games are "NVIDIA 3D Play Ready" anymore. You have to rely on community fixes to get the best results for any game, "Ready" or not. No support from NVIDIA at all.

I gamed for about 2 years almost exclusively in 3D and it was awesome. Blizzard games were the best looking ones believe it or not. Diablo 3 is by far the best looking 3D game out there. KoA:R was beautiful too. It's a shame that game devs will not focus on 3D anymore but you cant blame them since the actual creators of 3D cards will not support it them selves. I still use my 32in Vizio 3D TV for gaming but haven't even attempted to play a game in 3D in about a year (GTA 5 when it came out for PC, it was a utter mess).

It was always a fad to begin with, the cinemas will probably follow suit after a couple of years.

The so-called 3D TV gimmick was crap anyway so I say good!

I´d say for now home-3d TV is a gimmick. Way to little use and support.

Will most likely become a standard feature down the line. But for now it need more incubation.

As for the subject of the thread... it read like a kiosk rag. =P

Now i am not going to say that VR is going to have a wide home use, because i do not think it will. If anything make a break it will be more along the line of the type of AR the MS is working on.

VR will always remain a very specific product even if you get the size of the HMD down because it robs the user of the eyesight and hearing at the very least. AR is much better for that sort of things.

This have been a good conversation

The writing has been on the wall for some time now (and you didn't need 3D glasses to be able to read it).

3D TV's were really a gimmick. Our brains are very good at "translating" a 2D screen image into a 3D mental picture. The only difference between a 2D and a 3D movie or TV show is some added depth of field and a few OTT SFX where "jumping out of the screen" gimmicks are used.

Producing 3D content for those TV's simply doesn't justify the extra cost, which is why the cable companies will all "cut back" their 3D offerings in the next year or two. With fewer 3D shows being produced, naturally the manufacturers will scale back their 3D TV manufacturing.

3D will move to the VR headsets and 3D TV's will go the way of the Betamax...

    VR next?  Huh?

VR doesn't take the place of a TV.  That's like saying, OK 3D TV's are dead, are buritto's next?

Possibly the best answer yet, besides, who cares about buritto's anyway when you can have Pizza. :p

And I avoid 3D movies if at all possible (and seem to have plenty of company in the 2D versions I'm sitting in.)

Oh yeah, sure, I guess that's why the market share of Digital 3D movies is increasing each year since 2009 (Avatar) and is the first way people watch movies in theaters nowadays. But the movie industry is full of stupid people who will stop 3D even though it's their biggest income source.

Source for those figures, especially the part about it being the first way people watch movies in theaters? (I spend a hell of lot of time in theaters, has not been my experience.)

BTW, the reason I dislike 3D is I wear glasses, and putting glasses over glasses (which a good portion of the older audience wear)  is just a bad idea, likely I'll run into similar issues with VR.

if you think it's dead, wait for the next itteration, where you do not need glasses anymore :)

seen the system work on fixed screens already, they now try to figure out a way to make those pictures move.

3D can be a fun feature but it's not that well supported.
There is this little girl from next door who sometimes comes over to watch Disney Pixar movies with my family. She  goes as far as trying to grab whatever is shown.

As a kid you are easily impressed like that.
As adult the effects start to become meh at some point.

No it isn't. If 3D was the leading income source, there wouldn't be less than half of the 3D show times than standard and there wouldn't be just one single 3D movie currently playing in first run theaters (Kung Fu Panda).

It isn't about show time, kid. It's about income.

Lemme check the highest grossing pictures since 2009 when 3D became mainstream...

Avatar... Avengers... Star Wars.... Jurassic World... Furious 7... Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollows... Frozen... Iron Man 3... etc... all 3D movies.

The first of the highest grossing movies which wasn't released in 3D yet is number 13: LOTR: The Return of the King. The 12 first are all 3D. But yeah, whatever you say. 3D is dead. ;)
Oh hey, the troll is calling me "kid" as an insult. The great thing about films is that sales are tracked with great detail and revealed publicly. As you can see from the MPAA's own chart, 3D sales peaked at a 21% market share in 2010 and have been on the decline ever since. The fact that the movies are releasing also in 3D doesn't change the fact that actual sales from 3D is not, as you put it, "the biggest income source." Not even close.

So yea, the top grossing films were also released in 3D, but the majority of sales did not come from people seeing the 3D version.

So do I, I bought that Playstation TV they sold at Gamestop years back, $200 clearance for a 24" 1080p 3D TV with powered glasses was a great deal in 2011. I still buy most of my blu-rays in 3D if it's available since you get the standard movie with it.

3D TVs were stupid. VR is pretty awesome, current VR is kinda of bulky but hey, the internet was a clunky  piece of turd when it first came out to the masses too.
  • PurutzilPurutzil Member UncommonPosts: 3,048
3D always came off as purely a Gimmick. Sure, some people can like it,  but its over-all very inconvenient for effects that don't do very much to enhance the movie. VR really is the only thing I could see being a thing, though Its effects will likely not be as prominent for TV and movies and will be more for specific type of content which having a greater view will enhance the experience more.
