Gaming in the west has always been considered a "basement dwelling nerd" thing... well until recently and it is only now being accepted a phenomenon.
In Asia, there are gamers that are the equivalent of rockstars, celebrities, and sports figures. The general acceptance of "this is what we spend a lot of our time and income on" is widely accepted.
In the west we live in the age of entitlement, we expect the highest quality for next no no cost.
An assumption is made that they view It as P2W. They could view as Pay 2 get a leg up.. or Pay to avoid time consumption.
I think we sometimes forget that different cultures, groups, or (insert a term) don't always look at things with the same lens. Not good or bad, just different.
From what I've experienced, the entire concept of pay to win/get an advantage is a Western one. In the East, Korea and China that is, we almost never talk about these things, especially in relation to the cash shop of a game. This is due to a number of reasons. One, we don't believe in p2w at all. Two, the cash shop system is set up is such a way that non-paying players can also get what premium items they want. Three, we understand that paying real money does not translate into "winning" in the game, as skills are innate and in-game items/cash can be easily earned via the normal way, through hardwork and grinding (yeah we Chinese gold farmer tradition >.<). And this brings us to my fourth point, we like grinding, or at least don't mind it as much as most Western players do, for we believe it is the most reliable way for social mobility within that of a game.
Lately all I read here is either p2w or SC or the combination of the two. Alright! Whoever is losing in an MMO and needs money to win or wants a refund from SC fill the attached form and PM it to me. Free monies! o.O

I think its more they're paying to be better than you or beat you in PvP. Just a thought.
I find it amusing that this subject seems to be repeating itself...
What the hell is pay to win? 99% of the games I've seen with cash-shops and subs only offer cosmetics... Maybe silly stuff that doesn't matter, like xp potions or reputations etc. Which all in all are irrelevant, and no one is forcing you to buy them.
this, status is SUPER important in Korea and it is expressed by spending money, including in MMO
You have no idea what you are talking about
Sorry you don't like facts.
You ever heard of house poor or car poor? How about the housing crash...a lot westerners feel they need to spend money also to feel important its not just Korea...like Blue said you have no clue what your are talking about.

Facts? I am from Korea. My family still lives in Korea.
The
reason why you feel Koreans are materialistic is probably due to the
fact that most people have very limited view of materialism, namely
visible consumptions that are easy to price. Fancy car, fancy bags,
fancy clothes, etc. Depending on your perception of "materialism" you
would subjectively judge materialism level of a society. But,
economists have objective definition for materialism. One such measure
often used is Household final consumption expenditure (% GDP). This
roughly measures how much of a nation's produced goods and services
households (citizens) consume as oppose to export, public projects,
etc. As of 2014, this ratio for Korea is around 50%. The U.S. is around 68%, Japan - 61%, China - 36%. You
look at this ratio in combination of savings rate to determine if
people are spending too much of their income on material things as
oppose to saving for the future or for public goods. Based on data, South Korea spends way less on material things compared to what they make among capitalistic societies.
Oh she just googled a couple articles and became an expert...its amazing how she does that.
That is all she ever does is throw up a google link to support whatever agenda she has while disregarding logic and other links and articles that counter it. Koreans are less materialistic than many societies around the world. We take pride in our education, our job and our family. No different than any other country. We actually spend less on vanity than the US or Japan
People like her dont deal in facts...they live in some other universe where they get to make up their own "facts" and think people will actually believe them. Its hilarious in almost every thread she post in people call her out on it, yet she continues to stick her foot in her mouth.
A fun little game im playing at the moment is Dungeon Fighter Online. It's the pure definition of the East/West split in philosophy and approach to a game. It's made by a Korean company and it once failed when delivered to the west under very poor management but thats not the point. Its a casino with an online game skin. EVERYTHING is RNG and not pure RNG, the numbers are favored against you but gives you the illusion that you have a chance. And it sucks, it really is the pit which is a shame the game is a-w-e-s-o-m-e(imo, I dig the old school 2.5d games like it) and they capitalize on that. Some koreans are spending thousands of dollars to farm their RNG dungeon which gives them the best gear, the entry fee are invitations which cost a huge sum of money so people turn to RMT to get the ressources needed to farm these dungeons and it is by no means cheap. Its the kind of game that is being kept alive by the truest form of whales you can find in games.
My theory why there is so much RNG in eastern games? Culture; asians love having their fortune drawn and base many of their major moves in life around having a good fortune. Blood type, astrological sign, fortune cookies name it, they believe in creating your luck and thats why they ruin themselves in casinos.
Its the asian century so get ready to be flooded by these games and westerners will be the minor voice of reason in all that paid RNG madness.
I couldn't care less about cashshops or what's in them, we've been playing with people buying that stuff since the early days of this genre. If you think you're somehow at a bigger disadvantage now due to people buying power you were living in a fantasy back in the day..nothing more nothing less. That's the bottom-line.

Funny how some say Westerners don't mind P2W, then again, most P2W Westerners solo, so what's the point putting money on virtual goods if you're not playing with anyone else? I'll leave it at that since what I just wrote is way too much to process for 99.9% of MMORPG players. I'll just add this; boy do I miss the 90's where the internet was LIMITED and the few online games available were PURE GOLD. Unlike the 500 releases since WoW that are garbage. 56K U.S Robotic Modem 4 Life~! oh and having 2 phone lines so when someone takes the phone I don't lose my connection! Ahhh the memories!
I don't care if people pay for power , i mainly pay for bank slots , bag slots , character slots or relate stuffs ect... but i feel annoying have to pay for each character to unlock basic systems . Lately i just quit or play very little when see those game .
Yes, in the west we don't care about our status and we don't show off the things we purchase or vice versa. As the matter of fact "Esteem" part of Maslow's hierarchy of needs doesn't even exist in the west. We all have reached Nirvana. Now all join me in today's chant.

I think its a status symbol kind of thing, in Korea etc. if you can buy the win, if you can demonstrate to others that you are somehow a person of substance, it somehow increases your status among other players, at least, thats how it looks from the outside. That kind of behaviour doesn't really appeal all that much in the west though, as its viewed as being a bit shallow.

This is a completely ridiculous statement. It's no different anywhere else in the world because despite our cultural differences we're all humans with the same core traits and characteristics.
The EU is known globally for it's overpriced luxury vehicles like Lamborghini, Ferrari, and higher end models of BMW and Mercedes. The US has its economic status symbols in clothes and cars. Every culture has its status symbols associated with wealth, power, and social position.
There are universal elements of the human condition, but traveling and living in different cultural milieus for extended periods will also reveal that there are some differences that are not so easily dismissed, because histories are different and people choose different ways to adapt. So for the purpose of this discussion and based on my own personal experience of living in South Korea and working with South Koreans for many years, I have to agree with what Kiyoris is saying.
Humans everywhere care about status, but it is more emphasized on some places than others. That's a fact.
Cash shops are still in the newer side in the west even after being around in some form for near a decade. Asian games often come free or very cheap as many players can't afford much to try a new game they might hate and instead make money off of cash shops. This means since it started cash shops have been hanging in in some form. Also Asians don't mind huge grind fests as much or waiting when they can't afford it in the shop while those in the West must have it RIGHT NOW sort of thing.
