400k preorders for NA and EU alone is pretty big for a Korean MMO with no known brand. When you consider that the MMO market for new titles has now ceased after BD it has nowhere to go but up from there. There is pretty much nothing else coming out after this that we know of.
It will have a cash shop going forward no matter how many pre-orders it has or what other monetization systems it has in place, so saying that is irrelevant. A cash shop in an mmo is standard and not only that, it's something players seem to want with great desire.
Keep in mind that this is a publisher making money from an already established game, they don't really need massive profits at all because all they need to pay for is the license to run it, pay for some customer service agents and servers. Go look at how well Tera is doing in the financial statistics (top 5), it's doing well not because it's a behemoth like wow but because it runs in 6-7 different regions with low overheads for each publisher...just as BD will.
People really need to keep in mind here that the MMO bubble has now burst and there are no new mmo titles being made or launching any time soon after this, the only sandbox MMO titles that are around are Archeage and BD (and eve?). Nothing is going to replace these and also sandbox titles doing poorly means there is even less chance of anyone else taking a risk with that type of game in the future.
Given the state of the MMO market right now and how little interest publishers have in it, it's a little silly to mock a game like this having 400k pre-orders.
5 years form now the MMO market will look identical to how it does right now, there won't be many or any new titles in that list and we will all still be playing WoW, GW2, BD, B&S, Tera, ESO, FFXI, FFXIV, SWTOR, EVE and whtaever else is around atm.
The MMO market is stagnant so take pleasure in this new mmo, it's the last you will see for a long while.
It is not Korean Overlords. It is a company who makes a product. If you do not like the product fine but there is no feeling in Korea that Western people are stupid. Hundreds of thousands of people actually just like the game that was made. Nothing wrong with that.
So what's your explanation for them going B2P with this free game on western market? That's actually the part i was referring to. I don't care if people like game or not, that's irrelevant to me.

Because the market has changed and this is the last MMO that will release for years, why would they not make more money up-front? What it is in Korea is irrelevant to this publisher, they could make it a subscription game i they wanted to.
If you hate it so much go download the russian one and play with the english patch.

There is no hate, If i was Korean developer this is exactly what i would do. So it definitely makes sense. But really the question for me is how they are going to justify this up-front payment in terms of gameplay and cash shop? My point of view towards this game is totally neutral there is no point to get so defensive about it.

No I get what you are saying. It is F2P everywhere else so why B2P in the West? It is a fair question and to some a concern. Yet This game was made with the intention of appealing to a Western market. All MMOs (nearly all) have a cash shop regardless of pay model used. ESO does, GW2 does, WOW does FF14 does. The cash shop is not the issue since most MMOs have one. The concern is why B2P rather than the F2P used in other markets. Changes were made to the game to cater to a more Western market. Plus for the amount of content in the game a B2P is not a bad idea. Housing,Crafting,Trading,Taming,Farming, Questing,PvP and a beautiful seamless world to do it all in. That is honestly more than many MMOs on the market today. B2P as a model does not work in many territories like F2P does. In the West the B2P model has proven to be a model that is liked and supported.
This is a great foundation for a game. If the Dev's are able to take constructive criticism and evolve the game accordingly this game will have a bright future.

yes but the question still stays are the changes impactful enough to justify that up-front cost? Specially this choice of payment model should show in the cash shop, but does it? Just in theory lets say they are noticing that no one is buying their game after 3 months from launch anymore, they decide to switch it F2P. How it would make you feel? Personally i would feel quite cheated.

Sorry but the current number is over 1, Million Pre Orders.
The topic on the forum was not updated.
Where are you getting that number from? If you're still looking at the Order Numbers, the creator of that thread already stated that Order Number cannot be used to keep track of amount of preorders(and upgrades) anymore. It now includes free pearls given out during CBT2 and refunds.
Preorders (or founder's packs, early accesses, what-have-you) are usually not the problem. It's the amount of those people that actually stick that's laughably low. Well.....low....you know....with it being relative.
