Subscriber base does not make an MMO good, it just means they make a lot of money.  People throw money away every day, doesn't prove quality... not by a long shot.

If you consider the international market, WoW isn't #1 by a mile.

Not even with their made up numbers bloated with chinese 50 cent internetcafe tickets that technically never expire and count as an "active subscription" in Blizzard's PR drivel.

Where would you put ESO? I am currently playing that while taking a long break from WoW and I am loving ESO. It is so immersive and graphics look nice.

I don't know where to put ESO, I only played it for the first month.

You'd have to find a reputable MMORPG ranking site.

    No such thing.

Not their fault, while it would be easy for them to do so, most MMOs don't release specifics on number of subs, even CCP went dark once the numbers took a downward trend.

So you are left with at best educated guesses about the numbers.

Its difficult to include multi-business-model games on a subscription only debate. If x number of subscribers in ESO/swtor/etc unsubscribe for a month, the game lost x number of subscribers, but didnt necessarily lose those players as they can keep playing without the sub. And if they decide to use the cash shop instead of the sub, they still count as paying players but are not subscribers anymore.

Yeah forgot about that. I should of asked what are the top 10 mmos by player base.

If it logs to a server you can keep stats on it.  I do think it's a closely keep secret.  Even if different companies have their own record keeping styles.  Actual monthly payments for subs should be easy to track.

This is going to be very subjective and based solely on opinion and bias. Is it even worth speculating?

Lineage 1 is probably the second one in number of subs.

Not sure what you mean by internet cafe tickets that never expire. For internet cafes and game-rooms, players had to have logged in during the prior 30 days in order to be counted as subscribers:

"Subscriber Definition: World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules."
