What is BDO? IMO BDO = Ultima Online + Warhammer Online + DAOC + Dash of Archeage

SharessSharess Member UncommonPosts: 293
I would recommend the above mentioned subject for anyone looking to figure out what BDO is like. It gives a very clear understanding and is the best mix of games and mechanics that were re-introduced. UO was Open world, no raids/themepark style dungeons, open world pvp with punishments (also Karma based like BDO) and very similar in the way when you leveled skills your 'level' went up (as skills were levels there). Added Warhammer Online for the epic Castle Seiges we can expect, added DAOC for the roaming wilds from castle to castle. Added Archeage in there was for the graphics addition/style and the cash shop.

Anyone have any thoughts on how best to describe/recommend BDO to others so not to misrepresent?

if it would be possible to throw a little bit of wurm in there to I might be inclided to open the wallet.

What I have seen on this game seems to suggest that AAA games are starting to move in the right direction but they still have a ways to go

And that is why i stay the heck away.

UO PvP system... Yeah that one was a treat...

WAR castle siege that quickly devolved in to a mix between tag and nascar...

As for the rest, never played them but i would guess the same kind of flaws can be found.

I´l give them this... If done right and with the right community it could work. But i don´t think we can find that kind of community any more.

This have been a good conversation

I actually LOVED Ultima Online. My favourite MMO to date by far. So much freedom. Freedom gives you a LOT of potential.

DAoC was : non messy RvR with permanent siege battles and holy trinity. Not only that but you had 2-3 healers per groups and very refined strats with Bodyguard + pbaoe comps, caster comps, melee assist comps and many more...
Now you are comparing this masterpiece of PvP game to BDO which has no trinity, messy PvP with clipping and weekly only castle siege ?
Hurts me to see such comparison...

I am willing to bet a paycheck that you havent ever played a balanced combat without the trinity so you are not aware of anything different.

Does it matter? If they enjoy the trinity then who cares?

This bigtime. DAOC RvR is unmatched and to say BDO is remotely close just makes me wonder if these people saying this even played DAOC. Yes I ve played BDO enough to voice an opinion.

I don't think BDO is anything like Warhammer Online. In a way its almost harder to imagine two games that are further apart yet still in the same genre.

Out of the games you compare it to, I think it shares some similarities with AA, although it is still very different and doesn't have the massive p2w element that exists in that game.

I'd toss in some Vanguard, given the importance of the "Amity" (conversation) system. Except it's more useful than VG's was. Or at least than the VG I played back during the early days. It actually unlocks quests, lore and item purchases in this game.

Not quite sure it fits DAoC though, since it has no RvR. Lineage would be a better fit IMO. Lineage also punished PKers with negative karma and the possibility of item loss back in the day.

TL;DR: So... pretty much a hybrid of Lineage and Vanguard in my opinion.

I can't say about the sieges, but BDO definitely does -not- have UO's PvP system. There is no corpse looting in this game, and PKing is much more restricted. First of all you both need to be 45+, so no preying on noobs. Secondly, there's the karma penalties which make the perpetrator subject to item loss upon death if they do it often enough.

BDO is 50% laggy street fighter and 50% hodgepodge of 6 different free to play mobile games.  Boy shiny graphics have about the same affect on you glossy eyed nerds as boob irl.

Super Smash bros+all other typical Korean game design.
Far fetched +realistic ,goes in two totally different directions from one moment to the next. There is actually a lot of Silkroad online in there.

From what i have seen of Korean developers is they have absolutely no clue of North American culture or gaming, they take Korean ideas and stick their game into NA and hope it sells.Yet i have seen NA developers take Korean ideas and use some of them.

It is VERY typical of cheap Asian design though, most buildings are just 2D structures with all the npc's standing on the outside of them. Some completely WHACKED ideas ,like chopping wood from a Birch tree you OFTEN don't get Birch lumber just a plain wooden log   ...LMAO umm ya ok...hello?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Yeah, that isn't a bad comparison. The trading system reminds me of uncharted waters online a little.

Too much sugar, not enough coffee. That is how I see BDO. I would rate it as the biggest mistake I have made this year.

I'd much rather ditch Warhammer and pick Lineage II for the epic castle sieges. WAR had factions where you could only kill the opposing one, while in L2 every clan can sign up for the siege and even kill each other. Add to that that L2 also has clan v clan (GvG) war declarations much like BDO has...

Also, ArcheAge has more in common with BDO than just graphics & cash shop (latter being a BS argument IMO) because of the gathering & deep crafting the game has along with the trading that can be done from crafted goods.
