Does WildStar have a future? And if it does, what does it look like? Following recent announcements, columnist Gareth Harmer examines the possibilities.
We have now the usual PR damage mitigation BS announcement today: https://forums.wildstar-online.com/forums/index.php?/topic/150307-wildstar-update-march-2016
"Last Friday was an extremely difficult day for Carbine. As many of you know, WildStar has not been performing as well as we had hoped, and because of that it was necessary to reduce the size of our team. Events like this are never easy. To be completely clear, this does not at all reflect on the talent, dedication, or passion of the individuals who were affected. Each and every one of them worked hard to improve and enhance the game, bringing their creative energy to work each day despite the challenges we were facing. It has been my privilege to work with them on this team, and I hope the best for them in the future.
That being said, I wanted to make sure that everyone understands that this is not the end for WildStar. The team here at Carbine is still dedicated to the game and its community, and we will be continuing on the path that I outlined in my last state of the game update. Destination Arcterra will launch within the next three weeks. WildStar's Steam release will come this spring, and those updates will be followed by a succession of game improvements, new content, new systems and live events.
Work is continuing on Redmoon Terror, Halon Ring, and Evil from the Ether (our next expedition). The Item Upgrades system is still also in development, as well as new systems—such as multi-queuing—which are focused on expanding WildStar and bringing its players together in new and exciting ways. We will also continue to bring live events to our players—like the upcoming return of the Hoverboard zPrix Invitational—many of which will include improvements that further encourage and reward player participation. We will be talking in more detail about all of these initiatives, as well as many others, in the coming weeks and months. There are still exciting days ahead for WildStar.
It’s important for everyone to realize that the next few months will be a transitional period for Carbine. We still have a passionate group of core developers here who are focused on improving the game and creating new content, but transitions like this take time, and I'd like to thank all of you for being patient as the team gets settled and our development timelines get solidified. We’ll continue to communicate with you every step of the way.
Lastly, I would like to thank the WildStar community that has supported us through this difficult time. I understand fully that events like this affect all of you as well, and we appreciate those of you who continue to play the game and engage with us. As I have said many times, WildStar was created for you, and I’m looking forward to working together to make it even better.
I believe Chad Moore. I believe that Chad Moore is telling the truth. I don't believe NCSoft will back up Chad Moore. NCK will pull the rug out from under Carbine and the western players at any moment without a care. They'll do it to BnS, L2, Aion, or any other game they feel like. That's how they are.
NCSoft hates westerners and I think they grudgingly publish in the west just for the money because they aren't doing as well as they used to in their own backyard compared to their competitors. If they really cared about the gamers they would still offer Lineage in the West and they would actually support their western publications with interest.
Exactly. When i read the statement i was thinking that it sounds like it's coming from someone who really believes in the game's future and so tells us about it ...but forgets that NCSoft also has a say in this.
I also believe that from his point he is telling the truth, but in the bigger scope of things there is still alot more to be worried about than the internal re-structuring and what the remaining team is able to get done -because in fact NCSoft can pull the plug on any given day.
They better get the servers ready for the Steam release and don't mess it up like the F2P launch.
It doesnt matter how dedicated devs are, NCK kills anything that is underperforming with no mercy. Maybe NC will give WS one more year from now on to see how things develop. If nothing or few things change and the revenues remain low, the plug will be pulled.
I believe Chad Moore. I believe that Chad Moore is telling the truth. I don't believe NCSoft will back up Chad Moore.
I agree. This is going to be an incredibly difficult time, but the studio needs to provide as much honesty, openness and certainty as it can. Anything else, and cynics will seize on it.

I'm not normally doom and gloom but this really doesn't sound good for them.
I am shocked they actually admitted the game is not performing as well as they hoped. Usually they don't ever outright say that.
The saddest part is with the future in limbo this is not going to help get their revenues up as many people will be hesitant to spend money wondering if their investment will be gone soon.
I'm a guild leader of arguably the largest guild on Jabbit Dominion so I've been seeing a lot of reactions to Pappy's post and the firing of all the devs last week. I've seen praising of the devs and ''so all the doom and gloom was for nothing'' as well as ''I'm not holding my breath'' and ''I give the new raid a week as it will be buggy''
My personal opinion? I don't think Carbine have the resources to pull it off.
I love the dev team that's left, Pappy has been hands on since the firing event last week. Sunshine's been trying her best to put out fires and reassure people. Caydiem's going through a tough medical period right now so she's not as present. Tyrius hasn't updated his twitter (which we've learned is *the* way to keep in touch) in months. Steven Engle's been on my stream everytime I play WildStar to support us and watch, which is really appreciated. These are just a handful of the people left at Carbine studios and while I agree they're talented at their jobs- I feel there's not enough of them to push out content at the rate they want to.
Because they won't be able to push out content as quick as they'd like, we're going to suffer an even larger content drought. Arc Terra looks okay but I don't see myself playing it for longer than a week. We've been given no time table and they're going to use ''transition'' as an excuse to drag their heels and try to pump more money out of us with mini events and rng lock boxes. And I don't see anything beyond Redmoon happening to be honest.
Pappy told me there'd be a reason to keep my sub, but so far I'm not seeing it. Sure, I want Carbine to succeed, but I've already thrown so much money at them- probably moreso than the average player. But there comes a time where I have to sit back and stop spending my money. I'm not the only one either as most of my officer team have dropped their subs.
But saying all the above, I'm sticking to WildStar until it crashes. I will play the game and enjoy my time left with my guild as we've developed a family-atmosphere and know quite a lot of them in real life now.
TLDR- I felt Pappy's update wasn't enough, I'm done dealing with excuses but will be sticking around to see what happens.
@VenusRising A refreshingly honest post by an actual player. I bought WS shortly before it went F2P and I like it. However my character is only level 20.. there is just something about the game that it can't hold my interest for too long. Now I am worried that it will die before I got the chance to experience the full game at least once.
Btw Is your name completely random or were you a follower of Alex Allen too?

I know what you mean about the game not holding your attention, the game is not newbie friendly and the leveling content gets more grindy and harder after level 20. It helps if you find a good guild to keep you entertained while you do the same quests again and again as end game is definitely worth it- especially as a new player.
Niliana was my WoW name and I've never heard of Alex Allen sorry ^_^
Didn't like the game but it certainly showed talent and artistic flair. While well made it just didn't appeal to me personally. But it is always sad to see so much time, effort and money go to waste and for it to affect peoples livelihood. I hope everyone comes away from the project with good experiences and is able to successfully move on. Always a shame when a game closes.
A lot of words to say:
WS is still going to launch on Steam (we are told).
If Steam generates lots of new players - and revenue - WS will continue.
If Steam fails to provide increased revenue WS will be closed.
NCSoft have - based on their reported revenue and the staffing talked about - been losing $10M+ a year since the game launched so we can't question their commitment to "giving it a go". And it is unreasonable for them to continue losing money. So if it doesn't change its sayonara.
I don't know... They just let go of 60 devs and it was said to 40-60%, can't remember the exact number, of their developer count. I think we may be overreacting on this one. I don't think anyone can argue that the game has under-performed. To be honest, I was shocked more that they still had that many devs working on it than the actual layoffs.
If this were any other MMO I don't think people would be as worked up as they are. Since it's published by NCSoft though it, understandably, has players nervous. This game still has a decent chunk of devs though. If a second wave of layoffs comes along soon then I would worry, but not right now.
Then you have the people who always hated the game for some reason (legitimate or otherwise) and are giggling with sadistic glee at the idea of it being canceled. I won't name names but you know who you are.
Personally I found that while the game may not be totally newbie friendly in how it doesn't explain how to do key things like tanking or what the number in the shield means apart from "this is really tough to kill", it's not a grind. I've leveled up nearly every other session and more often than not, I'm of higher level than my missions making them pretty easy. Most of the times when my character dies it's because I got too ambitious in taking on more minions than I should have or I accidentally got the attention of one of those shield monsters.
There's so much to this game to keep me playing, but so much that it got wrong for me that I'm not going to be too sad when it gets sundowned. When that happens, I'm going to quit MMOs and go back to regular games. I'm tired of games I enjoy getting the axe. First City of Heroes, now this.
A few days ago, I looked around for a new sci-fi MMORPG to play and I immediately thought of SWTOR.
I knew of WildStar, but I didn't give it a single thought.
Therefore, I think the job of WildStar's advertising executives is to tell me why I should play WildStar instead of SWTOR. What makes the WildStar brand better? I have no idea. I'm a typical busy person and I'm not going to do their job for them.
I personally enjoy the game, I dont like couple of stuff like crafting been a gold sink, I dont like the merge of servers PVP with PVE and some of the bugs that are still pending to be fixed.
I think the developers missed a great opportunity of making this game a relevant game when they chose not to listen to their players. Also the obsession with end game dungeons etc it is a great factor in the decline of the game.
What is amazing to me is that people harp on the combat while it is much more engaging than stand-still tab target. It has a very unique look and feel to it. A lot of quirky humor to keep you going. A lot of little systems. The world was awsome to run around in, loved it. It seemed VERY lore heavy. I truely loved my time in Wildstar. I just don't understand how it is doing so poorly. Really think about it...the combat IS an upgrade from what we typically see. It DOES have a lot of lore. It DOES have a vibrant world.
What killed it for me was their consistant stance on endgame and raiding. Pre-launch, I voiced my opinion VERY loudly on wildstar-central about the game rolling out with 40 man raids. I said that it would never work and would turn a lot of people off. One of their devs, a Carbine dev, pretty much mocked me in that thread. Well, here we are.
What I basically said:
1. The people that are nostalgic about good ole' WoW 40 man raiding days WERE mostly between the ages of 17-25 most likely. These are people that might have a bit more free time, aren't tied down to starting up a family or a career taking off, etc. They are able to make the commitment. These people NOW are 27-35. These people now have familes, careers are starting, less time to play, less drive, etc.
2. The people that are currently 17-25 now and were so Pro-40man raid never actually experienced it. They were 7 and 15 respectively. I doubt their mommies were letting them stay up to raid.
So, and I know this is all presumption and speculation, why on earth would they put all their marbles in the 40 man raid basket knowing that people have either out grown large scale raids, or were still picking their noses when 40 man raiding was prevalent? Why do you think WoW has augmented their raiding so much as to incorporate EVERYONE? You don't even need 10 people anymore. Yet, Wildstar thought they had an ace up their sleeve or something? A magic pill to change peoples minds? It was Carbine's arrogance that was their downfall with this amazing game.
Sure, include attunement-less raiding. But incorporate endgame systems for solo/casuals beyond the run of the mill "5 man / heroic dungeons, pvp, crafting, daillies". Give a solo player, or a duo an endgame instanced experience of their own to go nuts in. Do something end-game wise that hasn't been done before. And reward the players for it. One more thing that I think is becoming more and more popular across all game types is some sort of PVE competition. PVE leaderboards for one thing or another. People love to solo content themselves and try to beat their personal best or maybe move up a few rungs on the leaderboard. Its a constant carrot.
Still, sad day. Loved the game. Just think the devs had their heads in 2005 which ruined it IMO.
NCSoft hates westerners and western developers. I'm honestly surprised the game has lasted this long, given how normally they kill off any western game at the first sign of trouble, or even the first sign that might be considered the precursor to the first sign of trouble.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
