Fantasy Earth Zero, little known Square-Enix game that had a brief run in the west with Gamepot USA. Yes it had it's issues, mostly having to do with lag, but hell if that wasn't the most fun I've had in a pvp game ever. Was really sad when it closed, and nobody else picked it up like happens with a lot of the zombie games closed in the west.
"In the previous week" before a closure, no. Both Vanguard and CoH I played a few months before they closed.
Vanguard, I would not have gone back to. CoH, on the other hand, I probably would've gone back at some point.

Such an amazing huge and beautiful world (the hugest world ever made for an MMORPG, you could literally get lost). Flying over the areas with my dragon was breathtaking. I also remember the very kind community this game had, as well as the GM's. They were the nicest GM's I ever met in any MMORPG, and the events they made were really awesome.
I had played CoX regularly but was out long before the shut down. They lost me after they released 'Architect' I believe. Everyone stopped grouping and leveling and just ran certain player-made exp heavy missions to cap. That was my cue to exit.
City of Heroes - First played in in 2008 and was on and off with it, I heard it was shutting down and I log in before the shutdown, to talk with some friends I made on there
Star Wars Galaxies - I played this a lot from 2005 till the shutdown. I loved this game a lot and it hurt when I heard it was shutting down.
And sadly I might have to put a third game on this list in the near future - Runescape ='( My first MMO I ever played all the way back in 2002 and even today I still play it even though during it's history it has had it's up and downs but man after already 15 years I still remember it and still play it (the OSRS version anyways)
Anyways Jagex was bought by some Chinese company and last year Jagex has had some financial problems, and it seems this purchase means the game might be in trouble. =(
I was not sad after City of Heroes closure and while it sucked the SWG closed I did not freak out. But if Runescape closed I will be legit pretty sad because this is my favorite MMO of all time (laugh at me but I am serious)

I logged in on SWG's last day just to take screen shots, then my computer bellied up within days afterwards so those shots are long gone.
Once an MMO announces a closing date, I just don't feel the game warrants any further effort. I can understand that there are many who feel differently, especially those that developed tight communities.
