imageGame Update 100 to Require All-Access Membership

EQ2Wire has posted a live blog of last week's Spring Update live stream when several members of the EverQuest 2 team discussed Game Update 100. One of the things the team caught was the reveal that Game Update 100 would require membership to play and to use items.

    So....

If I am reading this right they drop the new game, are looking to double down on the toolkit they were using the make the new game and make money from that, they are now restricting content updates to members only....

Now all they need to do is remove the F2P model from the game and we might start to see a sliver of what EQ2 use to be.

i have always paid a Sub for Everquest Games

The best PVE Franchise in mmo history  =)

DBG still have one of the best "optional" sub models around.... all that stuff you get across their selection of mmo's + they give cash shop currency for a single months sub price.

Wish other big publishers would follow this model but nope... they all wanr $15 per every single mmo with less stuff offered in them and laugh at you thinking you should get some cash shop currency lol.

This is one of few that is definitely worth it if you play any of their mmo's.

I think what he means is, they introduced the sub model years ago and totally screwed the player base into the ground. Charging a sub on top of a cash shop/f2p model totally screwed up the game. Instead of focusing on new content and improving the quality of the game they spent years putting together the digital Amazon in game so that you could buy stuff that you use to actually play the game and achieve. They screwed up in so many areas it's disgusting.. at least there is a sliver of hope here that they are getting their head out of their ass.

    Yeah go fuck yourself DBG.

In all fairness the amount of content available to free players is staggering. I sub so I am happy that my loyalty is being rewarded.

I have subbed on and off myself too. The problem is they are not rewarding loyalty but membership which is just paying for the content. I would be happy if the entire game was sub only but when it went F2P that is when I actually stopped subbing. So now we get the worst of both worlds. A F2P game with subs, with a cash shop, with members only content...throw that is which what has happened to EQN and the fact they are turning the toolkit (Landmark) into the ONLY game for all that effort and I really don't see anything but what this is. DBG trying to suck every last penny from the pockets of as many people as they can before they shitcan the lot.

I have a bit over 25K in DB stored from YEARS from when I was subscribed to EQ, EQ2, & Vanguard games. I have not been a subscriber for years now. I do play EQ2 a bit from time to time to scratch my EQ itch. The games are SO massive now with content it's a chore to redo the leveling & relearn how to play proper or you pay to level up. As a free player I agree with some previous comments that EQ2 offers a great deal of free content. I think there is nothing wrong with offering subscriber only content as well. They deserve it since continuing to subscribe. I keep trying to find reasons to use up my former Station Cash but all of Daybreak's deals seem to be for subscribers only LOL.

EQ2 was, is and remains, an amazing game.

Still subbed to it to this day, and have for most of the last 10 years. Top 2 MMOs on the market , IMO.

Sub game turned f2p turned subbed again? lol interesting

Ooo no, you need to pay for what you want to play. Still tones of free content in the game.

It never stopped being a sub game. The sub option has ALWAYS been there. Every time I have played over the years, I have subbed, even after they went f2p. You dont HAVE to pay to play most of the content available. The amount you get for free is massive.

I see a trend in this thread:

The people that play EQ2 (or have played it recently) see this as not remotely a big deal
The people that don't play think this is some diabolical move worth blindly bashing a company over

Smedley saw the shitstorm coming and got out at the right time.

I think the issue is them withholding content unless you subscribe, not the fact that they already have a hybrid model. If I remember correctly you only get Station Cash--or whatever they call it now--when you subscribe to Total Access, which allows you to buy the typical cash shop items.

It's not uncommon for subscribers to get little perks here and there when the model is hybrid. I'm not aware of Western MMO's outright requiring you to subscribe to get access to content...though truthfully I don't follow all the games as I once did so it's possible there are many others.

I agree, with already tons of free contents free players should be satisfied.

It always amazes me how hard people will complain for the products that they not even bought. With what exactly you think those devs will get paid? Hopes and dreams?

Are they talking about EQ2 or Landmark for needing alll access pass?

EQ2 if you want to access the specific content. Landmark is fine without it.

Smedley already announced that his game won't be F2P.

Since he left Daybreak, they have been moved away from F2P as well.

I think the only thing someone smelled is financial reports saying F2P wasn't worth it.

Death comes to EQN. Long live EQ2!

Played a lot EQ2. Long ago. Now there is no way I would play anything with that horrible grapchis for 2016! Yes, it is not all in graphics but it is also not all in rest.
