Again, that's something very novel. Again, if we were to consider Wii. Remember when you could fight with swords on Wii? That was awesome!! For about 2 minutes. Remember how Wii used to be used in old folks homes and stuff and casual gamers. Remember when it had exposed a whole new market? Then it just sort of lost that novelty.
That's what I mean. It's great if they can get a Star Wars game in VR. I do agree that it will sell some units. However, it doesn't mean that it's something practical, either, or good for that matter.
There are a couple interesting directions that companies are going. Obviously Oculus is high-end gaming focused, Sony is Playstation focused, Samsung and HTC are focused on mobility. So I think there's already significant fragmentation in a market whose size we're not even certain about. I do hope, though, that we're able to find more practical, everyday, uses for it.
let me put a finer tune on what I am saying:
I think there is a chance that VR will be a larger hit for TV/Movies then for games.

Actually, this is a great market for VR, and it's one that AR doesn't, necessarily, address. Also, VR is more suited to this due to the immersion that VR provides over AR.

we clearly have different definitions of mainstream.
Mainstream to me mean most people know about it. Its not realted to the products balance sheets at all.
By this definition space shuttles and polka music are mainstream
OK, who doesn't love a good polka?

Pornhub will be releasing Free VR porn. Yes it has just become mainstream. lolololol but in all honesty the first video that was produced with film was a porno. ugh boy
VR will Properly will have carved out its niche by 2018, but now, the prices are early adopters prices. And mass adoption will wait for power of a medium rig setup to be wear a basic high end rig set up is today.

I agree on your time line, I dont agree with your price reasoning.
people keep talking about these prices as if I didnt buy a monitor last year for the EXACT same price as a Oculus Rift...which I did

Its not mainstream yet, the devices are barely out there, and at the moment, its the plaything of those with high end pc's and a fairly large disposable income. This time next year, things might be different, but it is looking increasingly like Sony's VR will be the VR for the masses, while its still expensive, its a lot more affordable than all the other options by a significant degree. The only real question is whether or not PS4 owners decide to buy into it, if they do, then VR will finally have arrived. 2016 isn't the year that VR became mainstream, but 2017 might be.
is there a chance that a company owned by Facebook that has its product being advertised by McDonalds and where there is a Star Wars interactive content for has a chance of going mainstream?
that is how I should have asked the question

Probably not, but it will benefit a lot from other devices that stand a better chance of doing so.
Funny should mention the Star Wars thing though, as the PS Move is likely to be utilised in a Star Wars VR game on the Sony VR device, its probably already in development somewhere. Now if the OR also has a peripheral like the PS Move, then that would be a good selling point, only, the price is already so high, that it again, will be only the few who can afford to get it.
The VR battle was always going to be about money, in the end, which one had the best hardware was always going to come second place to which one was going to be affordable, its like GPU's you get the best one you can afford.

i think you just have a bias toward any VR project that is not Sony or Microsoft.
anyway..I dont see in what I said in that sentence to suggest 'probably not' but ok? i guess?

I am more likely to give Sony the benefit of the doubt than Microsoft i guess, having said that, i am not really all that interested in VR that much, i don't particularly see myself as getting a VR device of any kind any time soon, not even the Sony VR despite the lower price. On another note, i still don't see the current/upcoming VR devices as being good enough, maybe in 5 years or so, they will be, but at the moment, for me personally, a monitor is not just better, but more suited to playing games on.

fair enough. I do suggest however sometime by next year if you pass by a place that has a demo to check it out.

I think you know it's mainstream when you see pop stars using it in commercials.
