It has the worst combat system of any MMO I've ever played. If you don't give a shit about how combat feels to you when playing, I think it might be worth checking out. Some people like it, apparently.
as a point of reference. Morrowind and Skyrim are two of my favorite games of all time. top 10 at least and top 1 and 2 of ALL multiplat games ever. I am a big Elder Scrolls fan and yet there is nothing about ESO that interests me. I havent bought it and I have no interest in doing so.
Same here, I am still modding Balmorra in old Morrowind, as well as modding Skyrim. LOVE the games.
ESO did not feel like Elder Scrolls to me, other then the UI (a bit).
I suppose I'm (sadly) with you two.
I'm still playing Morrowind and Skyrim and modding skyrim.
I just lose interest with Elder Scrolls Online and usually just boot up the other two games.
Still, it's a decent game and has its strengths. It just doesn't scratch my elder scrolls itch.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

I understand it might feel slightly different than what everyone was used to. But it still feels very much like an Elder Scrolls game and also an MMORPG at the same time.
I think it's a wonderful compromise between mmorpg design elements and Elder Scrolls.
Also, recommend you invest in gaming equipment to play this game, unless you're some FPSer who's used to keyboard crawling.
Get a Naga and a Tartarus or Orbweaver.
Nagas (2014 Edition) were on sale at Best Buy for $39.99. Tartarus is only $79 or so, and is basically an upgraded Razer Nostrum.
This game requires a lot of key binds and compared to other MMORPGs, there are things that require keybindings that you may have been used to just Right or Left Clicking to accomplish (i.e. talking to an NPC, Looting a MOB's corpse, etc.). You can't run by pressing both mouse buttons together, and etc.
Aside from that, there are just tons of key binds that you'll want to use, moreso than in WoW even though that game has more key binds because the gameplay is different.
Being able to bind to both right and left hand is a huge advantage when playing this game.
I didn't find the game playable with only one of each of those devices. Both were needed for me otherwise my left hand felt overtaxed and/or the controls were way too awkward (too hard to run and jump without really awkward left-sided key binds or moving my hand from mouse to space bar).
TBH the game is very good now. It had a rocky start but they have really turned it around. Which is a rare thing for MMOs. Combat is some of the best I've seen in an MMORPG. It's very interactive and less about button mashing. Not much happens automatically, which is a good thing.
I'm just hoping they continue as they are not and not screw it up a few years down the line, like Blizzard did with wow. Luckily so far all the expansions have pretty good (and free if your a subscriber).
The only real down side to the game is the mass PVP in Cyrodil runs quite poorly. The world also isn't as explorable as in the single player games, everything is much closer together and less interesting.
This game is so - so I would say the quests were fun but the multi player part was lacking when I played. I did do an occasional dungeon with people but otherwise it was quite devoid of players but it might have improved now they went multi platform but the players on the different platforms do not play together so hmm may be not. I don't know why I quit playing it . The combat was okay I was not really having that much difficulty but the game has some element that is missing and I cannot put my finger on it. So in the end I don't exactly know why I lost interest at about late 30 ish in level.
Let us look at how they put this 2nd anniversary cake in as a reward. First to start the quest to get cake you need to go in crown store and buy the voucher. I see that as having no vision on how to create a quest to get 2nd anniversary prize. So after you use it tells you to go to dude to get cake, he says to get what he needs to get cake. Everything is right there so just turn around and get what you need. Give it to him, he makes the cake and it is added to momentoes.
I mean wow it was really an interesting quest for this fantastic prize! LOL
Then you eat the cake and 1 it does not stack with other xp buffs you have yet they say it will. FAIL!
Then it does not give you the XP buff it was made to do! Fail!
So the quest in it self had no imagination. Also I thought (IMO) starting a quest in the crown store was just wrong and shows no imagination.
Once again they do some coding that should be pretty straight forward yet it does not give you the xp they say it would.
So once again the coding is like the rest of their game, broken.
Should people buy and support this game with so many issues and bug infestation, answer is clearly a big NO!
I also think that their inexperience with this type of game shines clearly in the progression through the starting areas. There's nothing more frustrating than finishing the starting area (and discovering all the location on the island, not just speeding through quest text) only to leave at level 7 or 8 and then all the quests outside of it are for level 9-11 players. The MOBs in areas like Veiled Keep then proceed to 1-2 shot your character. You're getting loot rewards from quests that you cannot equip for 2-3 levels, etc.
Then, when you finish quests at a certain hub the game does nothing to tell you where to go. These are the very beginning levels, mind you. It completely confuses a new player. The Map System (and honestly, the default UI, in general) is utterly horrific, as well.
I mean, I almost wanted to re-roll just to see if I did something wrong, but I just quit instead because the game became extremely frustrating from that point on.
They either need to bump up the XP those earlier quests give, or reduce the XP requirements in the first 10 levels or so.
Many people have noticed that they tend to hit a gap around level 7-8 where there is no quest content for their level range, and they are forced to grind difficult content for which their characters are under leveled.
Personally, I just quit altogether.
Games are supposed to be fun/entertaining, and that was just frustrating.

I played EQ for like 6 years pretty hard core. Sometimes you have to move on.
It's one of the best MMORPG's out right now. It's the cream of the crop.
WoW, GW2, Black Desert, FF14 - it's on the same level as all these. ESO has its own strengths and weaknesses, but it's certainly worth the money. Just the shear size of the world is worth $40 bucks.
Yup, this right here. ESO and FF XIV are the best mmo's out asides from WoW. Very worth getting and it's Buy to play too.

Just because it's buy to play doesn't mean the game is worth buying, and unless you're going to subscribe, you'll have to pay for all of the DLC as well, so the cost actually isn't all that cheap unless you're willing to put up with missing content packs.
But I see why the companies are going buy to play (+DLC/Cash Shop); if people like you look at it that way...
