The internet has been abuzz for most of the last month under speculation of Sony and Microsoft releasing major hardware upgrades to their consoles. Readers of this site are used to the idea of upgrading our PC hardware every few years. Console players are outraged. As a PS4 owner, I understand that rage, but the PC player in me is struggling to find a downside.

"There is not precedent for this, only the shattering of an implicit trust that consoles would be performance-upgrade safe for their lifetime."

I can already see the marketing spin on that allegation: "No promises have been broken here, we're just re-defining the length of the console lifetime..."

More powerful consoles can only be a benefit for PC gamers, because it means that games can be developed to higher standards than the current "console performance cap" will allow.

But having just recently bought my first console ever (PS4), I'm looking at this situation as a very mixed blessing, lol

I own a PS4 and don't see a big deal. It's a relatively cheap device. I do think MS and Sony under hardwared there devices from the beginning though.

You won't regret it. The Dualshock 4 is arguably the best video game controller ever conceived.

What makes you think Sony wants PS4 owners to buy a PS4.5, too?  Consoles traditionally use the "razor and blades" model, where you lose money on the initial hardware sale and then make up for it with a cut of software sales.

More likely, they were going to do a die shrink to 14 nm, anyway, and AMD pointed out that it wouldn't cost that much to scale up performance and asked if Sony wanted to go that route--rather than risk falling behind Microsoft or Nintendo in console performance.

I thought the upgrade was for the VR headsets.  Which is resonable since the VR is new tech and they made it so their ps4's can adapt to it.  They did make it clear that you will be able to play all the games without the upgrade.  I would assume that you cant use the VR without the upgrade but it looked like you could.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Sony said that nothing can be exclusive to the 4K. Literally the only thing the 4K can offer is nicer graphics and/or higher frame rates. Kinda cool in that non-4K owners won't feel like they're "forced" to upgrade.

VR needs 90 fps minimal otherwise its really bad.  Our monitors running at 60 you are unable to tell the difference between 60-400.  But VR is different and you will need at least 90 and no telling what the best setting is for such a device.  Although we always have elitist who want to run monitors at 400 fps but really can't tell the difference once it reaches 60.

I personally believe consoles and PC's are just going to end up virtually indistinguishable from each other sometime in the future.

Maybe we will all just have quantum computers wired in our houses that do everything we need in 20 years.

...Bad article for me , we all know that all consoles of sony got second version of their consoles :

    PS ---> PS1
    PS2 ---> PS2 slim
    PS3 'fat' ---> PS3 slim
PS4 same thing, the name change --> Neo PS4.5

It happens with the PSP too --> PS vita

My first and best game was a RPG on console
Im a mutli-platform gamer , and since 2000's i see only one things to battle from Consoles/Pc :
Pc gamers always thinks they are better , cause they got better graphisme, modding option, betters games prices (some of their game in their steam library will never be played)....Yes it help i admit, but when i buy a game it's not for these little things, It's only and always for the "game"

Maybe you will understand what i mean , maybe not after all t"s just my opinion .
Im just trying to save the game soul .

PS : Sorry im not english

well thats inncorrect actually considering the human eye can only see up to 60 frames per second anything over 60 frames is considered excess, even a true pc gamer would know this.

Sorry, but, your actually completely wrong when you say that the human eye can only see up to 60 frames per second, this has been scientifically proven btw, and the ability of the human eye to perceive things probably exceeds 200 fps.
What you are probably doing is confusing monitor refresh rates etc with the human eyes ability to perceive things, a 60 or 70 hz monitor for instance will be limited by those factors regardless of FPS the PC in question is able to generate, which is why 144hz monitors are becoming so popular, because they don't have the same limits.

PS4 costs the price of a decent graphics card for the Pc. It's good they're releasing an upgraded version as the latest gen consoles do go a little too low on the spec for the modern age. And they need to ship them with SSD not HDD! Current console owners can do an upgrade to a SSD for an improvement. I got a PS4, but I strictly use it as a media streaming machine, as SmartTV hardware & their OS suck when set to do those tasks.

People are way overrating the whole PS4.5 thing.

A lot of sites are claiming it's going to support 4K gaming, which is just not possible, unless they going to price the PS4.5 at 1500 bucks or so! /shrug

All they going to do is just beef up the GPU a bit to be able to support stable framerates for the Playstation VR that is going to release end this year.

And at most (but totally unconfirmed) they might support 4K HDMI output and maybe even 4K bluray drive support, so you can stream native 4K video to your 4K TV.

As I don't have a 4K Television, not interested in VR either.... this will not impact me in any way at all! So I really don't see the big deal here.

It's basically the same as it was with the XBOX 360. The first edition only came with SCART and Component output and Microsoft later released the Elite Version, which was the exact same console hardware, just larger Harddrive and a HDMI output for 1080p support. That's it!

    Was also no big deal.

4K gaming on Consoles is still years away, as the required hardware is too expensive still.
Not to mention the cooling requirements! People will be up in arms to have a jet engine running under their TV while gaming lol!

That Sony is going to release an 'updated' console should really come as a surprise to no one, both the XB1 and the PS4 were underpowered at release, a 'power gap' compared to PC's that has only got worse as the months rolled by, they were based on old hardware that i doubt anyone would consider using in a PC either, and MS's choice of not using DDR5 for their graphics is one that probably caused as much trouble as their decision to include the Kinnect, multiple bad choices, not that Sony really nailed it either, but at least they created a more capable games machine, but you only have to look at games like The Division to see how limited even the PS4 is compared to not just the current PC hardware, but the average PC games machine, not even the high end ones, that the XB1 trundled along at 790p and still struggled with 30fps, compared to the PS4 that managed 900p, but still only 30 fps, to the PC where never mind 1080, but 1440 and 60fps were minimums, and the writing was on the wall, the consoles needed an upgrade, fast.
But i think Sony and Microsoft are approaching this problem from different directions, Sony with the PS4.5 probably because they have little choice in the matter, but also because they will need Sony VR to be successful, and 60 fps is probably not going to cut it for VR, but, if the 4.5 can hit 1080 and 90 fps that could work?
Microsoft has pretty much ruled out improving their console, and given the numbers of XB1's out there compared to PS4's, i can't say i blame them, but they have an alternative, and that alternative is UWP and Win10, its too early to say whether this is going to work out for them, but, they probably have little enough to lose at this point, chances are though that any future MS exclusives will probably be Win10 UWP ones in addition to XB1, though for how long before XB1 is relegated to the sidelines, is anyones guess.
But there is one thing for sure, Consoles no longer have a 10 year lifespan, that might have been okay for earlier version, but currently the hardware is advancing too fast for even a 5 year lifespan to be considered 'viable'.
The PS4.5 though a huge improvement on the PS4, its still not really all that powerful compared to the average gaming PC, so, this could be a turning point for MS, it may in the end, not matter all that much that their console is not as good as the Sony one, because most people won't be willing to buy a new Console every 3 or 4 years anyway, particularly when there may well be some backwards compatability issues, something that probably won't be an issue for games made using UWP, there is also the possibility that Xbox games converted to use UWP could be 'ported' over to the PC fairly easily, it would also probably mean that UWP on the PC would be the same software used on the XB1, which might just give the XB1 'extra life', particularly if you can stream your PC games to the XB1, a far more likely scenario than anyone wanting to stream an XB1 game to a PC after all.
Well its interesting times ahead. :p

I've seen and read a number of articles about this issue and the upgraded ps4 "Neo".

Now, Sony wants us to believe that their "upgraded" console will run games at 4K.

    Not even in their dreams..

I am sorry, but The Division is just a badly coded piece of crap and not a good Reference game.

Just look at some other games that do manage 1080p at solid 30 and 60 fps and still look absolutely amazing.

Don't get me wrong. The Division looks fantastic on the PS4, but it's badly optimized and contains lots of bad code (just look at their poor netcode and all the exploits and hacking that has gotten completely out of hand).
Massive are amateurs and still got lot to learn when it comes to Online Competitive Multiplayer games.

So again, not a good comparison.

Destiny. Amazing game, incredibly well coded and optimized and runs at a solid 1080p consistent 30fps.
I played that game for 18 months straight and had a total blast. The amount of times I experienced lag in those 18 months can be counted on a single hand.

The Elder Scrolls Online looks Incredible on PS4 (I play it regularly) and runs incredibly smooth without a hick!
Same for Final Fantasy XIV, which I played on both PC and PS4. Looks and runs amazing on PS4!

The PS4 is a very capable console with 8-core CPU and custom Radion 7870 GPU capable of 1,84 Teraflops, which comes very close to the performance of the GeForce 670 GTX. Which is a damn good card. I still have it in my own PC and can still run everything on High settings.
The PS4 also has the latest GDDR5 RAM (compared to GDDR3 in XBox One)

The XBOX One on the other hand..... that's a sad story. Hence, why I upgraded my XBOX360 to a PS4 and not a XBOX One.

For a mointor this is true.  VR is not a computer monitor.  You cannot put it at 60 fps and live with it.  Read the article from a developer.  You need at least 90 in order to play it and anything less is absolutely horrible.

I actually do not think this will be a win for PC gamers. Here's why...if you read the info currently available Sony is going to require all games to have a version that runs on the original PS4. That means developers need to have a standard and 4k version in theory. The install base of the PS4.5 and is going to be significantly smaller than the install base of the PS4. Therefore, there is even less incentive to make games for the 4.5. This is the same thing that happened with 3DS models. There's only like 6 games that are exclusive to the newest 3DS and it's for these very reasons.

Even if Sony didn't make a requirement to have a version capable of running on the standard PS4 developers would still overwhelming choose to do so due to the size difference that will exist in the two markets. This is going to be especially true for the initial time they roll out a console "upgrade" like this as it's a completely foreign concept to people that solely use consoles.

For those suggesting Sony "needs" this in order to be successful with PSVR, that does not appear to be the case. For the standard PSVR unit there is a piece of additional hardware that is connected between the headset and the device that picks up the extra load.

As an ex-PC Gamer and now a PS4 gamer, indeed the upgrade enraged a lot of people, but i entirely disagree that it'll create more PC Gamers.

First, you cannot build a PC Gaming Rig with the same power of a console for the same price.

Second, the upgrade is NOT obligatory, if you're ok with what you are getting now, you're not obligated to upgrade, everyone will have the same games, only the neo ones will have better framerate, if that's you'r thing.

Third, the main advantage of the console is the worries-free experience, you sit on the couch, press one button and you're back where you stopped on a previous game. On PC, There's Windows, Drivers and most important, a Interface totally designed for the Keyboard and mouse combo, not only it's totally unfair to play games (like CS) online with a controller, than it's a headache to try to use you'r pc with only a controller.
I know this because i tried to turn my pc into a pseudo console, and it failed, hard.

To sum up, the worst thing that can happen is that more people will buy PS4s now that the base model, will be costing a LOT less.

Coming from a former, Hardcore PC Master Race Gamer =(

Honestly though, the "lifetime" of PS3 and Xbox360 was entirely TOO long.  And basic things like missing 4K make me sneer at my systems.

What is MORE troubling is that they said these things could be "patched" into the current systems and we're finding out they aren't able to do so.  That's a blatant lie.

I think upgradable consoles is a good thing for PC.

There was an era where finding a true high end PC game was hard to do because:
    1. developers wanted to make sure it would run on console as well.
    2. the indie gaming world was considerably smaller than it is now and the pricing model for graphic tools was different than it is today.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

For you it's cheap, for me when I was a kid, my parents wouldn't buy me a console, I had to earn the cash myself which was an all-summer type thing before I could buy myself... a Gamecube. :/

Not everyone is rich and can blow $400-600 on a game machine every few years, or wants to.
