I would guess not even 50% of Americans know what MMORPG stands for, and its been a thing for 20 years. Shit, many people on this site don't even know what an MMORPG is.
3DTV is fairly comparable to VR, it was hyped as the next big thing and it failed hard because it could not get widespread interest, it just stayed as a niche piece of entertainment. Now it's near dead.
For VR to take off it has to do better than an MMORPG or console, it has to be exciting to almost everyone who is into gaming at all. It's not, not even close.
I just think people will waste money on something that will be dead in 5 years, we will see though I guess.
Even if only 10% of americans buy a VR headset, that would mean VR is a solid success and will be here for the long run.
Unless Facebook pull a rabbit out of the hat, it looks like Sony will take the early lead due to the PS4 tie-in. That's a captive audience that can be directly marketed to.
What will Microsoft do to counter the PS4's VR advantage ? There could be some big surprises there....

your last question is what I asked myself about Microsoft on the phone market until I finally gave up asking the question.
I doubt Microsoft will be a player, Oculus could very well come out the lesser popular option once we see all the options, the best options will likely come from companies that have all the smart phone parts in their factories.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
after seeing how cell phones can pop un-cooked popcorn i wont even attempt it..hell i dont even hold my cell phone to my head 70-80% of the time because of this...i saw a VR device that all you do is strap you cell to a head-set n play..WHY OH WHY would you want a cell phone STRAPPED TO YOUR FACE lmao i dont even want to imagine what it could do to your eyes / face long-term..bad things maaan bad things..

Thats not true though.. and kind of what the articles point out.
Right now VR has been out for months in a retail form. The big expensive headsets haven't been out for a real long time for consumer retail, but VR has been out since the S6 in a retail form.
According to the article billions of dollars have been spent since 2012.
What the article presents is a content desert. Low cost, barely entertaining or playable games that end up turning people off of VR instead of drawing people into it.
When I first tried VR, in its newest iterations it was a Demo on the S7. The second iteration it was a game. The game was the same one I saw in the demo -- just a various mech game and I don't think it was working properly.
People can go into many cell phone stores or electronics stores and see at least the Gear VR if not the Rift or soon the Vive. People expect more from their investment in VR and that just isn't there.
This could create the downward spiral for VR geared towards the consumer base -- at least for the vast majority of hardware manufacturers.
The Rift won't survive. The Vive won't survive. The PSVR might eventually have as much support as, say.. the PS Eye or Kinect did.
am loving how optimistic those for pro VR are. however it a fad/gimmick that i can't wait to see fade away. VR museum, amusement parks, industrial and medical use, sound great in theory but you can already do that with a PC.
putting on goggles that will damage you eyes over time even faster then a PC, is not worth the "extra thrill" or " in depth perception" you feel you will get.

To be clear, an investment first has upgraded Facebook stock and has increased the predicted income for next quarter completely because of predicted Oculus sales.
This debate is getting exhausting, lets just wait until 12 months from now and see if all these positive news articles and all the 'more than expected' and HBO deals and GoPRo cameras all turn out to have an Achilles heal which ends up making you right.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

You're missing the point.
What do you think will happen to XBox's market share if PS4 can deliver a compelling VR experience with its dedicated VR gear ?
PS4 will suddenly be the console everyone talks about. It will be seen as the premium console on the market, head-and-shoulders above the rest. Brand awareness will soar.
XBox will be left looking like the consolation prize of consoles, the one you buy when you can't afford the best, etc. They're already lagging behind PS4 as it is, that kind of "loss of face" could damage their brand beyond repair.
I'd not be surprised if the XBox execs are all developing ulcers at the moment. About all they can do at this point would be to partner-up with Oculus, Vive or Samsung, and I'm quite sure that all those options must be about as attractive as ritual suicide in public.
I think a lot of people know what VR is because of movies and television. The problem is, when people see this "vr" they're like that is not VR. It is not even close. I think that is one of the reasons there hasn't been overwhelming interest in this tech. I have no interest in this "VR".
I do hope it does well enough to garner more development to make a true Virtual Reality (lol i know, almost sounds like an oxymoron), but I can definitely see it going the way of 3d.

Oculus sales aren't doing that well though, they aren't releasing numbers, and production is too slow to saturate the market before the PSVR launches in 5 months. Hardware sales will not continue on that trajectory... they are probably hedging their bets on sales from the Note 6 and samsung using the "powered by oculus rift" to boost what mediocre sales they have from their store.
Most would say that I'm anti-vr -- which is silly as I actually bought a Galaxy VR set for my girlfriends littles.
What I am, is someone that refuses to support expensive, frivolous gimmicks.
I like the advancement idea of VR technologically. I know it will eventually create a better AR experience (which I'm very much looking forward to - and that market is suspected to grow at twice the rate of VR)
But I don't see the point in Rifts hardware. Companies should have seen by now how many different headsets there are.. how many different companies are getting into the HARDWARE portion of VR. When you have too many cooks in the kitchen... you end up with either a bland dish or an overseasoned dish.. either way.. it's inedible.
Just because Xbox one is behind PS4 does not mean it is doing poorly. It is still making tons of cash for Microsoft, and I expect they will want to expand that pool of cash into a lake of cash if they can.
I would bet that just like a lot of the gaming market, MS is taking a 'wait and see' approach to VR. They have all of the tools to make VR stuff, but may be (understandably) gagging on the projected investment.
The OP pointed out that people are oblivious to VR. Hell, I barely knew it was on the horizon until about a year ago, and I stay up with things. So what was said in the article is likely very true.
I would bet that PS4VR will tell the story of the immediate future of VR in gaming and in general use. They have a large market share, and if they do well I would bet that MS and Occulus will put a lot more into the process. If they do poorly, I see the whole thing degenerating until we can get Nervsteel helmets, which unfortunately won't be in my lifetime.
And I did want to say, I am planning on getting a PS4VR setup towards the end of the year.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!
XBox will be left looking like the consolation prize of consoles, the one you buy when you can't afford the best, etc. They're already lagging behind PS4 as it is, that kind of "loss of face" could damage their brand beyond repair.

Actually Microsoft has positioned itself pretty well in that area. They've planned to open up Xbox as a service now... looking forward to making it cross platform. This actually puts them in a position to move XBL games to Hololens when it comes to retail.
It also opens up opportunities for Windows 10 compatible devices like the OR, HTC Vive and even PSVR (they said it should be compatible with PC as well) to work on any windows 10, hardware capable device which could include the Xbox.
While a partnership might be a good idea, I don't think it would be necessary.. all they would need is content.
Well the same goes the other way i guess... Most of the anti-VR crowd are VERY pessimistic.
But then again most of them play it off like A: gaming is central... B: the 1st gen is the end all be all version.
As for a phone being able to cook a popcorn... Well i guess heatstroke is a actual issue.
Anyway.. As i said before. Most people actually realistic about VR see what we have now as a beta stage at best and a PR fling in general. A way to anchor the idea of this new (actually working) generation fo VR in the mind of people.
That does not stop a great many people trying to make a quick buck from it but that again always happen.
VR as a concept have for the first time been proven to work on a level that is at least acceptable (yes... I did actually have a chance to try the previous full VR headsets... those lovely un-textured 20 polygon models and flat barren worlds... Would not call that meeting customer expectations) so i am not expecting miracles and i have already pronounced the PS4 VR thing to be dreck... heck SONY them self have pretty much admitted that their current hardware can not run VR.. Hench the upgraded PS4 coming soon.
XBox will be left looking like the consolation prize of consoles, the one you buy when you can't afford the best, etc. They're already lagging behind PS4 as it is, that kind of "loss of face" could damage their brand beyond repair.

... They've planned to open up Xbox as a service now......
wait what? very cool.
I heard someone say this is what Microsoft needs to do about 3 years ago, I agree and I have been predicting that they would actually do it to. do you have some details on this?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Folks this generation seem very pessimistic about any new technologies, I think VR is just being lumped in there with colonization of Mars and sustainable agriculture as pipe dreams (regardless of how real and feasible they are.) A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and many folks seem to have just enough scientific knowledge to poopoo over any and all society changing advances.

Just MS up to their usual tricks, lol
They can't win the console wars, so they will attempt to leverage their domination of the OS market (Windows 10) to do an end-run around both PS4 AND Steam !
Soon you'll be able to just subscribe to XBox-Live and play the games directly on your PC without even owning a console...

It's leveraging windows 10 -- and thats why Xbox has slowly migrated its OS to windows 10.. opening up more features with each iteration until one day either the hardware will be powerful enough or the code will be streamlined enough so it's indistinguishable for developments sake.
They're bridging them together so you can buy a game that's for Xbox but play it on your PC without having to own an Xbox.
When VR games start showing up on the PC market, I wouldn't doubt many of them will make a debut on the new Xbox console that supports "your preferred headset".
Soon you'll be able to just subscribe to XBox-Live and play the games directly on your PC without even owning a console...
And i am fine with that... Especially seeing how the PC port of Arkham Knight ended up.
and that is basically what I heard someone suggest a few years ago.
Basically they said 'what is one thing that xbox has that isnt easy to manufacture?' Xbox Live users. so make Xbox a 'service' that can work on any device that can support the game or service.

Thats a good thing. The whole console thing needs to pass. Consoles were great when the average person didn't have the time, money and knowledge of PCs and their hardware to play games on their computer, but that age has long past.
I got to try this game below in VR and let me tell you I am now a believer...there is sooooo much immersion and potential for VR games aside from the rinky dink games coming out now. Give it time and we will see more serious looking games like The SoulKeeper VR and thats only first generation, imagine in 5 - 10 years what we will have available content wise.
Not sure what else they are going to be doing next or when the game is coming out but they have a setting that made me want to explore, plus the spell casting with VR controls was alot of fun, you actually have to use hand motions to trigger the spell rune in the air to cast it plus picking up objects as if it were a natural movement...I mean the potential for cool stuff, unfortunately after talking with the devs they explained that MMOs in VR aren't really viable yet unfortunately due to latency issues making for terrible VR experiences.
Still, I bet but only a matter of time before we get a VR MMO that looks like this :proud:

What you didn't see in that game was -- movement. In many games like this you can't just walk around.. and it ends up killing immersion quite a bit. The Vive is better than other systems with moving around a room, but chances are this runs on either a controller... or a "blink" system.

Which means that adopters of the PSVR system in the US is less than half the owners of the PS.
Regardless.. survive is different than thrive.
