A) People who watch the movie and never played might like it and pay another $15 for one more month. . they win
People who quit playing or are behind on expansions like me might go see the movie (so they got my money there) plus try the game out again (maybe more money)
C) People currently playing will likely go see it and likely already own those expansions (the 30 days might be only for new accounts?)
D) People who hate it aren't giving them money either way.
I don't see how they lose here. . someone will give me an e) though
Desperate, that's hilarious. This is a brilliant marketing ploy. Even if they kept 1% of the total going to see the movie for 1 month extra and pay for that sub, that will be huge cash. Not sure how desperation comes in.
Oh my bad i didnt realize that WOW only costs 9$ right now. So I guess giving that away isnt' a stretch.
This movie will be awful. Not even free WoW would ever get me to waste money on this upcoming atrocity.
quoting you so i know to make sure you eat your words if it turns out to be a major success. And regardless if the movie will be good or not, it's gonna make Blizzard millions lol.
You can quote me all you want. I never said it won't attract a fuckton of fanboys. It's clear that Blizzard has a large following. Success and whether the movie is downright awful are 2 different things. Hollywood is full of shit movies that kill at the box office.
While this may have some business sense, this also reeks of desperateness. May still be the largest game out there, but when EVERYONE I know doesn't ever plan on returning and dislikes the current state of the game to such an extent, there is an issue. Looking forward to the movie though!

I think it's a great move also. If the movies a hit it will breath new life into the game and would start a series of Warcraft movies.

Desperate??? They would be fools not to take advantage of this. Literally only an idion would miss the chance to get an extra 1-2 million subs even if only for 1-2 months.
No matter how much people bash it WoW is still the best MMORPG out there with pretty much no competition. It will be for few more years as well since as we can see all new MMORPGs that come out go either on the P2W path or are filled with bots and are grindfest games.
Probably that is the reason why people are slowly moving from MMORPGs to ARPGs/MOBAs/Shooters like Overwatch/Battleborn/Paladins etc...
For god knows how many years I played only MMORPGs(mostly WoW), but now the way things are going probably in the next 1-2 years I'll completely switch to the genres I wrote above simply because there is more variaty to choose from and better quality + they are cheaper.
This is super smart on their end. They aren't desperate. They are roping in the people who quit a couple expansions ago, who never wanted to pay for the expansions or maybe forgot about playing it again. Or even just lost the spark. I know a lot of people who played wow religiously that got burnt out, that kept saying they wouldn't go back ever, but then randomly would get reminded of something from the game and would have a huge urge to play it again. I'm hoping it works for them. I know I'm going to end up seeing this in theaters, and my girlfriend will probably go with me, she doesn't own anything other than the base game and one expansion, so she will be able to play them all. I think it's neat.
The time gap between the movie and Legion release is too wide imho. Even if the film is good, a big if, not many will have it in their minds 3 months later and with the summer season in between.
I've created a event for my 2 newphews to come with me to go see it opening night. one newphew asked if we should wear costumes...im not sure what costume I could wear.
All the Wow bashers made me chuckle. The game still has more subscribers than any other game out there and it is getting a bit dated.
I will probably go see the movie, heck, can't be any worse for all the trash movies out there.
The problem is there is a plethora of huge blockbuster movies launching at "the same time" as Warcraft which are a long way from trash. And that is simple fact nothing to do with bashing WoW. And by huge blockbusters I mean bigger than The Jungle Book and Captain America (the latter releases in the US today but has already opened outside the US to huge numbers).
Is the promotion "good marketing"? Not necessarily. You can always spend lots of money promoting something - that's easy. Good marketing is generating sales without spending loadsa money.
Who is the hot Orc babe? She half human half Orc? Let me guess.... Love story with Ragnar and Hot Orc Chick.
What's with the Moses scene where a female Orc floats a reed basket down the river looks like it's taken straight out of the "Ten Commandments" Probably Ragnar's and Orc Chicks love child.
Looks the movie might be quite cheesy. They probably butchered the lore to Hollywoodize it.

The half-orc is Garona Halforcen who murdered a king and played a major role in WoD. The baby orc floating down the river is Thrall. If you don't like WoW lore, I don't see any reason why you'd enjoy the movie.

Explain to me what huge blockbuster movies are launching at "the same time" as Warcraft. The two you listed certainly aren't.
The Jungle Book is already out as you already noted. Captain America releases May 6, so in 3 days. Warcraft does not come out until June 10th. Thats over a month away, so why would you list these 2 movies as some kind of evidence that they are going to take moviegoers away from seeing Warcraft?

Your definition of genius and mine must be two totally different things .
Obviously, since Blizzards genius will make them millions while you sit in your house tugging your pud.
I'll wait for Netflix

It's good marketing. They'd be stupid not to offer something like this.

And heck yes I am going. This game no matter how I feel about it now had a huge impact on my life and the gaming industry.
