Animations are still placeholders currently. We will see improved animations in Beta.
This, and understand that you have some great artists employed at CSE..just watch their streams from the past or actively when one of the modelers is working... trust me when I say the graphics will be awesome.
that being said keep in mind they aren't going for the cartoony crap of WoW and Crowfall... its a more realistic look. It's going to be really really cool.

You realize games don't just appear out of thin air, right? They do have to be worked on over time, and things are iterated on and things do become better over time. This is how game development works. Don't be so cynical.
This game is all about large scale PvP, 50 trillion polygon models would only lag everyone into the ground. If you want kewl graphics go play a solo game like BDO.
It's possible though. Perhaps not a 50 trillion polygon model, but I'm going to assume you were exaggerating to emphasize your point.
If you look at Planetside2, you've got a game that has absolutely gorgeous graphics on the highest settings. Granted, because it's a shooter there's not much intricate melee combat animation going on. But you've still got people running, shooting, crouching, walking, flying, driving vehicles etc.
Thousands of players on a single continent and 100v100 battles aren't uncommon. All in an open world. Game still runs just fine.
You may want a slightly-above-average rig if you want all the settings on max, but it's quite user friendly and able to be reduced to potato graphics for better performance.
It could be the engine they use, or just good optimization. But it's absolutely possible.
How fun is the group PVE and PVP? That is all that really matters. Out of date models is perfectly fine with me.

Guess we are back to these old excuses. Been like ten years since there was serious mmo contenders, and during the betas, they all looked awful and everyone always said the same thing, but when release rolled around nothing had been improved especially not graphics or animations. You don't do that stuff then redo it and redo it again. Why would you?
No clue^

Sadly quite a few people expect everything in one go. I've sat through so many real alphas like this one and understand that it will have its time. The reason most mmorpgs that come out suck when it comes to pvp is because they want to make it look pretty. Well Shadowbane , DAoC and UO had some of the best pvp with complexity balance and growth. EVE online has some of the best strategic pvp around and these games mentioned don't focus on making it pretty at first.
Core mechanics, balance, bugs, content, UI, all come before any work on graphics.
It's a real alpha. And beta has been delayed multiple times. A good thing. And there are multiple beta phases at that.
Now to the main point they are building and using their own engine instead of an off the shelf one that was never designed for an mmo and results in hacks and cheats galore.
I'll take less than perfect up close characters in an mmo engine with hundreds of players on screen fluidly any day.
graphics could be average , so we could get a free lag mass pvp game
If this is true, it would be worth it. 100 people battles always sounds great but are usually lag-fests.
If they can figure out a way to make these kind of battles playable for most people, that would be pretty great.
They have tested and have had over 300+ people and bots in one area with zero graphics and zero network lag. And no that was not with them just standing still or moving around. This was with them actually fighting each other and with different dyes on all the armor.
But it is worth noteing the current models and animations are just place holders atm. Atleast that is my understanding. The graphics are always improving and getting better from the videos.

They posted a update sometime in Dec of last year
http://camelotunchained.com/v3/evening-update-wednesday-december-23rd-2015/
Where they reached 3k backers and bots in a small area before they started to encounter issues.
We all remember the SWTOR Tonka-toy lightsabers from beta right?
I mean holy crap were those bad lol
