Don't go with AMD cards because I had a Sapphire Card fail after 1 year of use
Following that logic i used my AMD Radeon HD 6950 for almost 6 years and it still works fine, i just needed an upgrade. It sucks that you had a bad experience with AMD but that doesnt mean everyone has. But OP said he wants Nvidia so he'll find good deals there for sure.

Yep you can't take one experience and assume the entire line is bad.  The ATI 3470 card in my wife's desktop (she doesn't game, but the onboard video kinda crapped out on her motherboard) is... 9 years old.  The GTS250 in my system hooked up to my living room TV is 8 years old and going strong.  I had a Nvidia 8600GT die when it was 2 years old, and a Radeon 6870 die when it was 4 years old.  So I have seen good and bad with both of them.

And if you read all of the thread, the OP is now looking at both brands.  I personally don't care which brand he gets, all I want to see is him get a card that does what he needs it to and is a good deal.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

Usually is it not AMD or Nvidias fault that a card fails but MSIs, Gainwards, EVGA, ASUS or whoever that made the card.

Now, if anything is AMDs/ATIs fault is it the drivers, they are better nowadays but they were terrible some years back.

To avoid cards that die after a year you need to look on the fans and heatsink of a card, heat is the thing that usually kills a GFX card (well, and clueless overclockers who takes things too far but technically is it heat there as well). There are of course other things that can die as well, particularly if you have a crappy PSU.

Some people prefer AMD cards, other Nvidia while a lot of people just buy who is leading at the moment. Neither companies have always been at the top. But it doesn't matter that much, it is far more important to get the right card for your budget and use then who made the GPU.

I have killed an Nvidia card myself once, it was bit overclocked and the fan failed, burnt out in an instance (when I changed the fan to one I had lying around it kinda worked but started to draw out lines everywhere, had to get a new card but things like that happens).

Like some others have said wait till after the new cards release if you can.  But never buy a first generation hardware release either, just asking for problems there too.

If you can't wait I would say get a GTX 970 if it will fit your system.  I picked up a MSI GTX 970 for about $250 with a rebate a little while back, think the original price was around 320 or so then, was a great buy.  Just keep your eyes open for sales, you can get really good parts that way.

After all the replys (i really appreciate them all !!!) I´m thinking on waiting untill new cards are released this summer and then go for a GTX 970 or even a 980 if they drop the price a little.

I also have an eye now on the upcoming GTX 1970 if they are in the 300-400$ range!

Thanks so much for the advice :)

how do I say this without creating a hole that someone will attack me on. oh well here goes nothing I saw a video of a 'real' benchmark comparision between 980 and 1080 and it although better it appeared to not be as that impressives as many of the PR shows suggest. Having said that the VR technology is what interests me but I am not sure if that is also not just hype. My conclusion is that if not for VR then 980 is absolutely the way to go

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
