Warcraft has taken massive profits outside of the US, pushing it into the most successful video game movie ever made.

Trumping the likes of Tomb raider, Prince of Persia,  Resident evil, Angry birds, pokemon, Doom and many more, proving as always that critic scores don't mean shit to real people.

It proves that quality and popularity are two different things, and that popularity varies in different cultures.

Example Justin Biebers music is not well reviewed either by critics and the masses have bought his stuff by the millions.

The critics were not wrong about Warcraft - it does not do well under scrutny used for professional movie reviews - such as script, acting etc...

But none of this matters to the masses abroad.
Critics are paid to find fault, most of which viewers don't see or care about at all.  Especially in a fantasy action flick like this, you aren't getting people who have high movie standards going to see this, just people who want to be entertained and have a blast.   What they do is akin to someone pointing out a brown leaf in a forest of green, nobody else sees or cares it's there.

That's the point I was making, their opinion doesn't really matter anywhere near as much as they think it does.  At the end of the day, reviewers are little more than entertainers these days.

You are right the key is abroad. Not in the US. Domestic take has not been good.
if it mattered there would be a point... it doesn't matter where the money is made as long as it's made, by reports of how much was spent making the movie which was estimated between 150 - 160m making 377m has basically doubled + more the investment they made making it. which i would consider a success.

i honestly think that they will make a sequel, they left it open to it so i believe that they are planning one.

Lets face it, Video games (and fantasy movies) still have a stigma in the US, not so much overseas, especially in Asia.

Or maybe China opened a bunch of new theatres this year and have allowed movies that you would otherwise never see in their country.  Considering they have half the world's population and have one of the most strictest governments.  They are simply exercising their new freedom to watch movies that are usually not even allowed.

We are talking about a country that doesn't allow Google, Facebook, and a whole bunch of other websites that the rest of the world are using every day.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Websites_blocked_in_mainland_China
Are you onto something or just on something?

And we are forgetting that despite how good we think the movie is.  They have yet to make 1 dollar off of it.

It does matter because if the film had done well in the Domestic market, don't think Blizzard is bummed that it didn't, think of how much money they could have had and the one movie could have turned into a franchise like LotR. I seriously doubt beyond maybe another film we will see much more than just the two. Hollywood is fickle about numbers. Tons of movies have done well overall because of overseas box office take but have never gotten a sequel or franchise.
i tend to somewhat agree with this

    https://m.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/4oj5zb/the_industrys_war_on_the_warcraft_movie/

    have a read.

Edit - it's also estimated that most blockbusters making between 50 - 70% of their box office takings internationally.. which is a big market, another article goes goes on to say that despirate warcraft doing poorly domestically it's going to break records for a domestically made movie making it's majority box office internationally...

so depsite being a disappointment domestically it's still making waves.

Just a FYI ( I am just passing this on not stating this as my opinion) - For all the success, they still haven't green lighted  sequel of any kind and it was billed as a trilogy in some countries.  Almost always a sequel would be named or at least be discussed.  Tomb Raider had an immediate sequel announced as did Resident Evil and Mortal Combat.  Universal's lack of a commitment to a sequel is seen as a problem in some circles and the rumor is they are concerned as close to 75% of the movies money came from China.

highest gross does not necessarily mean highest profits.  The budget and marketing were higher than the other video game flicks  which means they need a higher gross to match the profits.

It's a domestic dud but a hit in China.

    True point.

Rotten Tomatoes has the film at a 29% Rotten from critics  //  81% Audience

So if you add them that is 110 out of 200.  Or you could call it 55%...

    Batman vs Superman 27 + 66 = 93 score.  46.5% average.

    Captain America: Civil War 90 + 91 = 181 score.  90.5% avg.

    X-Men Apocalypse:  48 + 72 = 120 score.  60% avg.

    Star Wars 7.  92 + 89 = 181 score.  90.5% avg.

Doesn't seem to be a bias going on.  At least not with RT.  Fanboys will be fanboys...

Even if by some miracle they get 70% of the gross.  They still haven't made 1 dollar.  Don't you need to actually make money before considering a sequel?

Yep, that's why they're called critics and not cheerleaders.

The movie was bad. Had the quality of made for TV. Even than, the story was watered down, no plot twists, characters you mostly didnt care about. I walked away not feeling invested at all.

You don't have to be an expert movie critic scrutinizing film making components objectively to sense that there is something horribly wrong with the film even at a basic story telling level: even though the "origins" story has potential, it is told confusingly and badly.

It's supremely disappointing especially for those of us who are fantasy fans and have familiarity with the subject. It could have been so much better but they totally screwed it up.

    This.
While I did go see the movie for sentimental reasons I normally wont see  a movie with under a 50% critical rating.

BTW unless you were a fan the critics were not wrong, wasn't a very good movie.

Rumor was they need 500million but again that is rumor, normally it is double budget to start making profit. Their marketing in the west is dismal I'm struggling to believe it cost them 300+ million to market it here.

Warcraft is a bit of an enigma considering it was a Chinese invested film and the way money is distributed is quite different than a normal Hollywood production.

Normal is 2.5 times the costs.
