SWG will never work as "Six Flags Online: Star Wars" (my new pet name for Chris's SWG vision) here's why:
a.) Not everyone can be Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo ect.......and the more people try, the more they will become aggrivated by the fact that they cannot. This is an MMO, if you make these Heroic characters the same as the player characters, you've removed the Hero from the Heros. It becomes "You too, man in bathrobe wearing Star Wars undies, can be Luke Skywalker! Join millions of other Luke Skywalkers as you all attempt to beat millions of other Darth Vaders!"
b.) By removing the "Virtual World" from Galaxies, they are effectively signing their own obituaries. They have proven from the very infancy of this game that content comes to them like relief when constipated. They can't write it, they can't implement it, and they are changing the game from a system where it didn't matter much, to a system where it's the ONLY thing that matters. The quests suck, they are ill-contrived, they are pointless, and they don't work half the time.
c.) By the simple action of removing these professions that you claim to hate, they have proven that they are innept at developing a MMO. You NEVER remove professions from a live game. It's the ultimate sin they could make. They make this sin even worse, but admitting they are not skilled enough to code the original system. NEVER admit that. Hire more people, hire better people. NEVER admit to paying customers that their money isn't good enough to afford proper development on their game. It's like saying "Well, we know you paid for this house, but we decided it wasn't enough to put the roof on it, so here are some tarps. No no, you don't have to pay us more, we just don't want to finish it."
d.) The movies are linear. MMOs are non-linear. Never the two shall meet. In order to make a long lasting MMO that stands the test of time, your going to have to make sure that your content isn't LIKE watching a movie. Lets face it, we all watched Star Wars a million times. George Lucas is a master and Star Wars is a masterpiece. Star Wars Galaxies however, was not written by George Lucas. It's story line is far from engaging, and it's downright annoying by the 2nd time you run through it. Imagine watching the Legacy Quests over and over as many times as you've seen the movies. Want a barf bag?
c.) Players will be willing to let developers lead them around by a hook in their nose as long as the content they are offering is good and interesting. SWG offers nothing of the kind. ANY quest in the game at the moment is of poor quality at best. We played them cause they were there, not because they were some great storyline that drew us in. There is nothing else to do, yeah, we're going to do their sh@tty quests.
d.) Basically what I see happening is the new development team wants to change the game into a system that requires no work on their part. They want everything pre-determined. They want people to walk through it like they are walking through "Six Flags Online: Star Wars". Making everyone walk the SAME paths, and everyone do the SAME quests. Everyone gets the SAME gear and everyone fights the SAME way. The more they make the SAME, the less they have to tinker with. Now this may seem logical from a business perspective, but not the business of games. People, and when I say this I mean ALL people young and old, don't want an MMO where their sole objective is to zoom around looking at the pretty pictures. Which, in a 5 year old engine, aren't all that pretty anymore. People need INVESTMENT in order to feel IMMERSED. And I don't mean by investing years of time. I mean that my 2nd week of play I was so freakin excited to get my hands on an FWG5 pistol. I'd been scouring for days, and when I finally found a great one, I loved it. You don't get that now, everything is handed to you, nothing is worth a damn. You don't get excited like you used to over the simple things that made this game great. THAT is what gave you IMMERSION. Running around doing Han Solo's dirty laundry list in order to get a COMPLETE set of new gear is NOT IMMERSION. You have no connection to those objects, you have no connection to this cardboard cutout Han Solo. It's just cheesy.
On the same topic, I watched a friend try out SWG after the NGE (against my better judgement). He started a character, thought that whole proccess was very cool. Gets to the newbie station. "Hey! There's Han Solo!" I said, yep that's him alright. Know what he says to me? He says "Why would Han Solo talk to ME?" I laughed my ass off. Out of the mouths of babes right? Why WOULD Han Solo talk to some random dude who happens to pop up in front of him. He's F-ing HAN SOLO! He doesn't TRUST anyone!. My friend never finished the opening station before he uninstalled and went back to AC.
That and much much more are my reasons for not wanting to keep the new SWG Devs Idea of a Star Wars MMO alive. I hope it suffers a worse and more debtfull death than E&B.
Originally posted by n2k3156 Originally posted by MeFartsSmell You know I like this game and still enjoy playing it, but the simple truth is that this game was always a problem for most people from the get go. Most people who played this game based it on the movies and thats it, you can and will never be able to make a Star Wars MMO in or around the time line that the movies are set in. Everyone has there own take on the movies and how and what they should be, and example is the Jedi, die hard fans feel they should not be in the game because there were no Jedi, however in the EU, there were many Jedi who survived the purge and the Empire, and etc... I feel this game will stay alive, but it will never go back to the levels it was before, and it wont attracted to many new players due to the fact the game is old. Actually, I have to dispute this a tad. I've been ingame since launch to the NGE, and I have a unique perspective as such. Within the first few weeks and months of SWG, people only jokingly compared SWG to the movies. No one really cared about continuity or "star-warsyness," we were all having fun just learning this awesome new game. I know that everyone says we just say pre-CU was good because it was so long ago, but it really never had any of the huge problems post-CU. Changing the game was a terrible idea from the get-go. Sure it needed work, but it was progressing. The CU stopped that progression, and the NGE retarded it.
i want my game back i paied good money 2 play not this nooblet game no one likes. $WG now have 2k players and it suck big time. i want my game back and that game is the pre-cu

We all know its just a post to stir us up. Frankly its not worth trying to explain anything to this person of little knowledge of a once proud game.
If he says he was there before (doubt it) and loves the game the way it is now, then thats all we need to know to realize this person is either nuts (and I'm being gentle) or is just trying to stir a hornets nest by his comments.
Therefore, go play your watered down, has-been, playstation type, little game and say no more.

I guess the simplest way to explain it would be like this. I bought and played SWG when it first came out so I could play in the STARWARS UNIVERSE. I liked the fact I could be anything I wanted and explore as I saw fit. All the NGE has done was to force people to live in the STARWARS MOVIES. I dont want to be like lukeskywalker, or Han Solo, Or BobaFett. I played the origional SWG so I could be me, and be apart of the galaxy, not to be forced into playing what i can watch over and over again on the DVD's. If this conecpt is to hard to understand then go back to candyland.

Based on SWG player numbers, yes, it's the minority. Pre-cu X people played, they kept losing numbers since then according to Mr. S himself. This leads to the conclusion that less people like this.
There's an important point that's often missed. No matter which system you use, the type of game you make, etc., a group of people will love it. Fortunately, people have different opinions, and can make their own choices, have their individual tastes.
What original SWG showed, is that there's a decent number of people, that want something that is off the beaten path. Same with UO. They don't want classes, linear stories, cosy worlds. But both UO and SWG failed at realization. The ways of how the world is presented, the society relations, skillsets are all more or less unexplored areas. This leads to much experimentation, and inevitably, due to limited budgets, to bugs.
Many still believe that MMOs are about getting to level x, then pwning lowlevels. But if you take a look around, the demographics are changing. More and more games are coming out (mostly in Asia), that apeal to either true casual players (played with two buttons total), or to different demographics (adults, seniors). SWG did that, and as such fell into conflict between two groups, namely the KOTOR and SW EU approach.
Both have a place, but SOE blew it when they pulled one to replace it with other. I cannot recall a similar case in any industry, where complete product line were changed so radically while having customers still pay for it through the whole process.
Imagine you're using electrical appliances, paying your fee, then one day, they simply change everything to be gas powered (it's more ecologically friendly), but you are left replacing all light bulbs with gas lamps, half of your appliances are useless, and cannot be replaced (gas-powered dishwasher?).
The decision SOE did with SWG fails to meet any business sense, let alone ethics (business or personal).
Consider the following: Blizzard announces, that in order to improve the imersion in the world, they will be removing class-based system, and replace it with skill based. In addition, all the epic items will now be available for purchase from vendors.
Such an obvious flamebait. I'm surprised this has 4 pages worth of answers already. This post is so stupid I wouldn't be surprised if pirrg had opened a new account.
SOE knows what you like... You don't! And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!

This may not prove it, but it's somthing to think about. When the exodus from the NGE started, EVE Online reported a sharp increase in accounts. I live in New Eden, I came from SWG and I can't go to a moderately populated star system (btw, we have 5000) without bumping into a SWG refugee. Not proof, but a good point.
