Not hyped, I don't "play games" these days.

For a game that now claims is mostly about exploring and is hyped up to 11 it seems about damn time

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I want to like this game but every world I see in videos has this strange sameness to it. I get the felling this will be a huge area to explore but all you will find is slightly different versions of the same place with new random names.

I'll wait for the reviews, but the key thing for me is "would I be able to play it off-line"? I don't want to buy a game that only works as long as a server is running.
  • Octagon7711Octagon7711 Member LegendaryPosts: 9,004
There will be an offline mode but you won't have shared discoveries with other players and no meeting other players.

Whats the point of this game?  To explore randomly generated planets?  Why, for what purpose?  That's like buying an mmo just to explore the landscape and it having no content, that would go down well!

Randomly generated sounds awful, what if I find an amazing planet and tell a friend about it.   Does it mean they can't come and check what I found because it no longer exists after I log off?

If all the universe is randomly generated and then stored, that sounds kind of cool.  You could make forum posts about what you find and others could then go find it based off your co-ordinates etc but it doesn't sound like that's what this is.

This sounds like a complete waste of time, then again I also thought the same about minecraft and pokemon go so who knows.

You can play it completely offline.

Everything is procedurally generated in you game client, you don't "play on a server".

to be clear the world is randomly generated for all players so that planet you find is findable in the same location for everyone.

The thing is however is that this is pretty much standard for games that have random generated maps now anyway so its not radical in of itself nor is it something that hasnt already been done and is fairly common place now. Although to be fair for people who avoid Early Access games like the plauge might have no idea this is happening in many gmaes now

Off hand this sounds like a very hackable game.  I expect to see tons of exploits. Unfortunately.

There's a big difference between randemly generated and procedurally generated.

now there is a hole that will go nowhere productive

exploit what?-who cares? you play the game alone-(you will be cheating yourself) its not like a co-op thing. nor a multiplayer game.its not competitive.

its all about exploring- not about braging rights...imo.

    -looking forward to this game!

As with any game, there will be those that will compete.

Who will be the first to get to the center of the galaxy ?
Who will be the first to get to the center of TWO different galaxies ?
Who will be the first to explore planet type X that has an extremely deadly atmosphere ?

Friends will compete with each other, and the more dedicated nerds will take it to Reddit, of course... :D

What we have with the Milky way Galaxy is reference points X,Y,Z but with this game having so many planets will I be able to look at a map or have a friend send me a screenshot from their phone to show me their location, will that do me any good. or I guess I should ask will this galaxy(ies) have a frame of reference point.

I remember reading that there is a loose story or at least a set of goals that lead to an ultimate goal, which reveals something important about the essence of the universe. Maybe I saw it in a dev. Video or something. Can anyone confirm or clarify for me?

There is no "personal story" or quest thread or any such mechanism, but there is general background lore that places things in context.

The idea is that your start on the outer edge of the galaxy and then attempt to reach the center, because there's something important there. Nobody knows what that thing is.

All we do know is that the journey becomes more and more difficult the closer you get to the center. More powerful animals and NPC's are encountered, and more and more extreme and inhospitable planets.

NMS also has a definite "Survival Game" aspect.

Play Starbound or Terraria. They do the whole random generation of worlds for you to explore... but after that there's still actually things to do, not just pet/shoot a cow and fly to the next useless planet lol.

Really? Then I have to ask, if you don't play games, why are you on the forums of a site dedicated to a particular sub-genre of games, you know, those things you don't play
Not being mean or anything, I just don't understand and would like to.
