What does 2016 tell you about 2017 MMO's?

KopogeroKopogero Member UncommonPosts: 1,685
One can tell a lot from what is to come based on what has happened and still happening through a year as well as the previous years. So, based on 2014, 2015 and so far in 2016, where do you see the biggest change/shift with MMO's and what do you think this will mean for MMO's in 2017?

I think many now are making more MMO's due to the technology available that has edge over outdated MMO's like WOW as well as the fact they know it no longer has that control over the market as it used to. The fact that also consoles have a far more powerful hardware now makes MMO's far more profitable by how they can reach out to bigger market without sacrificing in too much graphics.

We've already seen this many years ago with DC Universe Online and FFXIV and more recently with the The Division. One thing I do respect though is games like Star Citizen who have this enormous budget not caring too much about the console market. They just care to bring the best possible experience and I think this is a bold move that I've always respected.

I believe in 2017 Star Citizen will be the next MMO king followed by one great MMO. I have a hard time to know which will be the 2nd most popular MMO due to the sheer size of MMO's that are coming, but if anything I know 2017 will be the year where you'll be spending more $ on MMO than 2016 and IMO that's a good sign.

2017 will be the year of kickstarter projects and Korean imports. I doubt well see another proper tripple A MMO from a western studio any time soon.

@R3d.Gallows Star Citizen is a triple A MMO from a western studio coming with 125+ mil budget. I think this is the main reason why other AAA's are not happening currently in the west.

If 2016 shows me anything, I expect that the 2017 MMOs will be released around 2020.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

That the MMOs released will continue to mostly suck

Don't get too excited, Kopo. I'm sure you'll make it through without spending money on them. Gotta keep that streak up! ;)

On a more serious note; I think many MMOs like FFXIV and ESO have now shown developers that it IS entirely possible to make money from console gamers as well, and that quite a few of them don't mind paying for subscriptions.

Which might renew the interests of western developers in the genre.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

    Same thing 2015 showed us.

I think Bless will be a big surprise. I also think CU will make a big impact.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

What I saw around 5 years ago is many popular companies in the west releasing similar MMO's with big budgets in the same time while also WOW was still super popular that end up hurting themselves, which is why we haven't seen them release anything new since. In fact you can see where they are now and what they are doing.

Yes, I'm talking about Trion with Rift, Funcom with The Secret World, Bioware with SWTOR, SOE with DCUO, etc. All of these MMO's came very close to one another within a year or so, all themeparks, all with raids just like WOW.

The long pause in 2014, 2015 and to extend 2016 in production of MMO's in the west has allowed Asian MMO's to reach out this market like FFXIV, ArcheAge, Blade & Soul and Black Desert. I mean if you also look at all other super popular games like Skyrim that came in 2011 and other similar genre games like Marvel Heroes Online as well as Path of Exile afterwards, it just shows the size of the market by how most of these games are still running.

@blueturtle13 I really envy you. I wish I was as excited about games (specifically the modern ones) as you are. Sadly, when you play too many for too long, you kinda get burned out and in the same time you know more what makes you happy and what doesn't. I also know that if I spend $ like you what I want is a long way from coming...but hopefully I'm wrong.

So find a game to play. There's always one out there to log into. I've got FFXIV Atm. If not that, I can play SWTOR, if not that, I can play WoW, if not that, I can play GW2, if not that, I can play ESO.
    Honestly, it's not that hard.

True but one could hope one of the crowdfunded games work out. Still, the only really high budget AAA game will see anytime soon will probably be Lineage eternal.

I have not heard that Undead lab have stopped working on their zombie survival MMO though but neither have I heard any news about it the last 2 years but if it still is in production it would be the only western AAA game at the time (it is funded by Microsoft). I wont hold my breath that it releases but at least there is a slim chance.

I don't think we'll see many surprises 2017 besides a few kickstarter games that go into beta, I seriously hope at least one of them delivers a fun experience (my bet is Pantheon but I don't count out Shards, CU or Crowfall yet, all of them do have at least some experienced people working on them).

I seriously doubt it. Im not even sure theres much of an overlap between general MMO audience and people waiting for SC. The lack of 3A MMOs in the west is due to the fact that 1: a lot of big studios have already tried their hand at making one and werent that successful, and 2: you can make comparable money with a lot less risk and significantly lower investment in other gaming genres.

I don't think we'll be seeing SC release in 2017, or at least if it does, i doubt it will be feature complete, although how incomplete probably depends on what exactly 'minimum viable product' entails.
I don't think anyone seriously expects SC to really release much before 2019.

The MMO will be strong but the MMOrpg will be lacking.

I don't define "great" as in which game has the most population. Sure population has a factor but if a couple hundred thousand play the game I'm good to go. I define great as in do I really like every aspect of the game, am I hooked, etc. Star Citizen is going to be a game changer for sure. I don't care if it doesn't attract millions of players but mmos need to go back to old school roots in early 2000s(not including WoW). Because besides Star Citizen I don't see mmos being that different. After 2004, the only noticeable mmo change to me is STO.

MMOs releasing throughout the years have mostly been the same. One thing that will always keep me puzzled is why people value population numbers so much, I thought thats the dev's not the player's job.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

I like how you just literally listed the same mmo 5 times as examples. There really isn't any mmos out there for him right now he just has to wait for the indie developers to come out with their mmos. For example, The Repopulation,Divergence Online, Star Citizen. Even though they had to restart development on the repopulation to make it on a new engine that game is the most promising imo.

MMORPGs will have absurd business models surpassing mobile. Stuff that were jokes at developer panels will now become reality.

2016 tells me that we have reached the bottom line in regards to innovation in the genre. It can't get any worse from this point on. I am looking forward to the mmorpg that promise to bring back social aspects and oldschool elements. 2017 we need you now !
