I do play strategic civ games like Civ 5 , beyond earth and looking forward to Civ 6.
Also No Mans Land .
IfI am burnt out I just stop MMO completely for few months and then recheck.
But sadly lately only playing GW2 and Archeage and that's also because I don't want to let go of the beautiful housing system it has.
Other than that I like to watch scifi/horror shows so lots of them latetly , the Preacher , Stranger Things ( this one is recommended ) , Supernatural, dark Matter, Z Nation, Outcast,Containment etc etc etc.
Also got a dog from Animal Survival Center a year ago.absolutely in love with him so he ends up dragging my ass outside everynight for 1 hour.
Totally agree with the "play other genres" solution. If a game bores me I quickly abandon it -- there are too many great games out there to waste time on mediocrity.
It's a balance though, as sometimes games are at their best when you get a little more invested in them. I abandoned Witcher 3 in the first few hours since my first 2-3 sessions with it were really boring and frustrating. Recently I've gone back to it and have been enjoying my time. (Still despise the fact that developers are occasionally clueless when it comes to PC game control design; a player's hand naturally sits on the left side of the keyboard, so things like "Hit Enter to Continue" are really dumb, especially when important hotkeys are non-changeable as W3's seem to be (all menu items, including the frequently-accessed inventory and character menus)).
Certainly it'll be worth coming back to WOW for Legion. I don't know I'd recommend coming back earlier (though Demon Hunters apparently unlock tomorrow for those so inclined). I'm re-subscribed myself and half worry that I'm shortening how long the next expansion will amuse me by learning all the updated class rotations. I keep sessions pretty short/casual though so maybe that'll help.

I feel the same way. I'm burned out on MMO's in general. The last 2 I played was WOW and KOTOR. Wildstar before that. Maybe I haven't played the right ones I don't know. I mostly play PS4 games of late.
One thing's pretty amazing tho: the amount of time you suddenly start to have when you're not glued to the screen doing dailies/dungeons/raids/crafting and what not. MMORPGs really do distort your perception of time.
I play other games, for me gaming doesn't have to be MMO exclusive and I can live without playing one. I still boot up SWG once in a while though. Just invest your time in what you enjoy.
I don't play MMORPGs anymore. Hopping through diffrent MMOs over and over is pointless as problem is not with any specific game but persists through whole genre either due to design tendencies, technology and/or financial constraints of creators.
What do I do?
- Video games wise - mainly single player games + some non-MMO multiplayer games on occasion
- Other - find new hobbies and leisure activities, interesests, improving oneself, looking for opportunities in life, etc
At some point i came to realize that this genre will not recover.
I gave up on it, now playing different games altogether, mostly singleplayer. Having more fun, thrill and most of all IMMERSION than i have had in recent years with mmorpgs.
I posted it in another thread already: the more i play other games, the more i notice how far behind this genre is in terms of development, innovation, mechanics etc... Although i still like some of the mmorpgs, i can't spend more than a few weeks on any of them -while the other games i'm playing keep me hooked from start to finish and even for a 2nd and 3rd run through.
Like the OP, i spent the last years waiting for a mmorpg that sucks me in and brings back the old feeling. It won't happen, because my standards have changed while the genre hasn't and won't. People are complaing about WoW clones and once a game does anyhing in a different way, people complain about it being different. Everyone is yelling for a game that is not WOW or asian crap, yet nobody is able to adapt and ready for a change.
Have fun with that 4 weeks Legion kick and nothing to do after. Have fun with these Pantheons, Shroud of the avatars and other b-ware crap that won't survive a year with their 10k players. Have fun with kickstarted amateur titles that barely make to the finish line and into their own niche, $150 alpha access frauds and buying your way up to fun through the cash shops and lockboxes. Keep on worrying about bag space, character slots, name reservations, housing upkeeps, travelling mechanics, resource points and all these other "inconvenience on purpose"- systems that devs have build for you to make you pay and string you along on streamlined paths.
In the meantime i'm out for adventures in wonderful worlds in games that overwhelm me with content, surprise me with intelligent design and offer things to do that i haven't done this way in any other game before. Instead of logging into these groundhog days of mmorgs, repeating the same day every day through dailys, arenas and token grind.
I feel the same way about the mmo slump. I've been trying new indie games, but they can't keep my attention. I log into gw2 everyday just for my free shit then i gtfo. I might check out legion, but surprisingly i've been really enjoying hearthstone.
I've been feeling VERY burnt out lately. Lately being the past year or som sadly. I've been meaning to share my thoughts with likewise minded people. I keep chasing the original MMORPG high, but it's a vicious circle.
How do you deal with this? Do you jump through mmorpgs? I would do that, but I feel like I'm wasting time, while the perfect mmorpg is waiting out there. I know, sounds sad, lol.
What I do:
Guild Wars 2: Since I'm a semi-vet in this game, I seldom fire it up and do PvP or build something or spend gold on gem shop and hoard more cosmetic stuff. Don't seem to care about any new content tho. Sad
FFXIV: I've recently made a post about it. I login, do roulette, MAYBE do one story/job quest. Can't seem to push through more. Logout.
ESO: Would be a good game. But the dungeon queue for DPS is insane. Also the game feels a bit empty. Do 1 or 2 quests. Logout.
I was thinking: should I go with WoW? But then I think: you know, it's too old. Plus it's very mainstream and has got too much content to catch up on.
Then I scroll endlessly through Game List. Tera? Nah, new, better stuff's coming out. RIFT? Ah man, perfect MMORPG... until Trion fucking spat on the playerbase with their PAY TO HAVE FUN. Yeah, I miss RIFT dearly.
Should just probably go through single-players games like ploughin' Witchah 3. Yeah, that game's good. Many other games around as well. Until... the perfect MMORPG comes out? Is it going to be Crowfall? Project Gorgon? CoE? *insert other upcoming mmorpg name here*? Ah, sometimes it's tiring to think about all this.

Just leave the MMO genre for a bit. I normally go back to my steam library to finish some games bought during sales in the period i was tied to MMO. Problem with MMO genre is usually very high time demand and i have it the way that all other games feels like waste of time because things can be done in that online thing you play.
Now i am facing same decision because of BDO new system which while may not be p2w (please don't discuss here what it is) it for sure is very arguable thing.
I only have time to play 2-3 hours of games a day. Currently focusing on finishing up Witcher 3 and its expansions. After that I'm gonna pick up some of the myriads of single players in my library that still need finishing. That's honestly the biggest challenge: there are so many games out there and coming out in the future that it's extremely hard to finish or even start anything.
MMO's are no longer really on the foreground for me. I'll probably return to play PS2 again, that was the one I spent most time in recently. Sometimes I come back to try another MMO that I haven't ticked the "played" box for. Most recently Blade&Soul, but it felt far too meh, especially in terms of early dificulty and story.
In general, it's gonna be hard to hype me up for anything these days. Especially MMO's.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
I like to occasionally work with ideas that maybe could become a great mmo one day.
One idea is a Cyberpunk 2020 ish game, and the other is a medieval fantasy game.
I also like tinkering with a transport ship model for Star Citizen, however with CIG not showing how they make models (partly because they haven't made up their minds I guess), I will have to wait until I can hope to finish it.
I tried WoT and World of warships, but the simplistic game play becomes really annoying, so I recently uninstalled both games.
SW:TOR broke my MMO back - it made me realise just how much time I was wasting playing sub-standard games and that I was essentially an addict. So, I took a step back, analysed what I actually enjoyed about MMOs, then quit. The sort of gameplay I enjoy in MMOs is still my favourite type of gameplay from any genre, I just can't find a game that has it.
So, I sit and wait, keep an eye on the market in the hopes that a game will release that meets my needs, whilst maintaining self-discipline and not committing to any new MMOs just because I feel the need.
Whilst I'm waiting, its primarily single player games. I do gamehop to match my mood, but as they are single player games it doesn't really matter. On the go at the moment:
Total War: Warhammer - For my strategy needs. Generally 2-3hr playsessions minimum, so this game suits when I have time and desire to get stuck in to something.
The Sims 3 - This is my current chillout game. Takes no effort, is ridiculously easy but still fun. Generally have the tv going at the same time
GRiD - Racing game from 2007, nice balance between arcade and sim racing, still looks OK. Can generally jump in, do an event which takes 30m-1hr (4-5 races) then jump out again.
MXGP - Motocross game, play for same reasons as GRiD
DOW2 - I only play last stand mode, but gives me my 40k fix. I have 8 heroes to play with and level up, is fun and rewarding. Generally play for an hour.
Dishonoured - Recently picked this up, seems like a great game but you need patience. Semi-fulfilling my RPG needs but not quite.
I am missing a quality RPG from my current games list. I tend to revisit the final fantasies (have 7, 8, 9 and 13 on PC) but I fancy something new. I just don't like RPGs like Dragon Age or The Witcher, so have been struggling to find high quality RPGs that are different.
Outside of gaming, its important to have other hobbies. When I quit MMOs 3 years ago, I realised I had basically nothing else going on in my life hobby-wise. So, I joined a gym. I took up painting warhammer miniatures again. Later, I took up a new sport (roller derby) which was pretty terrifying to begin with and I still don't like competing in front of a crowd but have made some great friends through it. These days, it means life is pretty busy. I generally only have 1 or 2 evenings a week free and 1 day at the weekend free, so I'm not constantly bored anymore and really appreciate just having free time to game.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
I enjoyed playing cards growing up so I joined Bridge club two years ago. The competitive bridge gaming has managed to satisfy me in a similar fashion that my raiding did back in the days.
What I do miss is the group gameplay with online friends that you had between raids and also the chatter you had when doing casual gaming. That's why i still hope for a new game.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
Leveling a hero in MH. Playing alts in GW2 new living story. Tomorrow will be playing demon hunter. Will be playing Deus Ex on the 23rd. This is my August.

Single player and mobile games. I have finally gotten over my prejudice against playing games on my phone and I have to admit that while most mobile games are garbage, the ones that are good are legitimately good gaming experiences in their own right. And it's nice to be able to plop down wherever - couch, outside, basement, lunch at work - and game for a bit. Having lots of fun with the new Mobius FF game.
Also actually making progress on my backlog of single player games feels nice. I'll take new characters and stories and music over grinding out my 10000000th rabbit/widget/"dungeon" (aka murder corridor), thanks.

Try out The Technomancer, that game is fun
