I was at GDC, and even knowing a couple of the people at Bioware they had nothing to tell me because even within the company very few people know anything about the MMO that will be developed in Austin.

They haven't filed for any new trademarks recently. They just abandoned "Start Citadel" trademark claim. Which was only filed for in early 04, for a unique IP game.

They did KOTOR so the possibility is there. I think it is more likely that it is Unique IP myself; but then again I know nothing anybody else doesn't know.

    That's classic :D

Gotta love community managers with a sense of humor. Makes it much easier to like them.

Also, breaking into the game industry in a position OTHER than entry level is near impossible, and even getting in entry level is very hard, depending on position. Artists are almost always in demand, but writers, programmers, and management staff (lead positions) are pretty much left to those with experience. Good luck, you'll need it.

    Richard Garriot said at GDC.

"When I started with UO it was very easy to quickly find a better programmer than me. It was very easy to find a better artist than me. I have to this day not hired someone I would consider a better designer than me."

"People passionate about games that have artistic talent become artists, those with a talent for programming become programmers. Those that are neither artistic or good at programming call themselves Game Designers."

I would say that artists and programmers were certainly the most sought after at the GDC recruiting stations. But all facets of the industry were represented. We are going through a growth explosion right now from what I can see.

Wow, what a bunch of hypocrites you all are.

Talk about flames galore.image And I mean flames. Guys, if hes leaving, then say goodbye. If you dont like him or he has a bad history, then why even bother coming into this thread? If this is just a troll, then why are you falling into the trap? I hear you guys preaching to stop flaming people but yet I see a whole mob practically after this guy. Let him die in peace, for heavens sake.

I am sorry for going off-topic here (wel lit was a flame anyway so ::::15::), anyhoo, how faceted is the industry? Is it possible to benefit from both concept design and modelling when applying for position, for example? would it have something to say at all that one can do two things? I dont know much about game industry and how they it reqruit and organise work-force, so any link regarding this would be appreciated too :)

    thanks in advance

There are times to sugarcoat things. This ain't one of them. People don't just give away their respect, it has to be earned. The fact that Supernerd made a thread like this makes it obvious he expects our respect. We're just clearing it up for him.

CONGRATS! Nerd I hope it all works out for you. Just remember me when you get your name in lights.

And since no one else has stated the obvious classic, it falls to me to do so.

The fragmentation grows with the size of the company really.

Although I would never try to sell myself as a jack of all trades.

To a recruiter that usually spells "I don't know what I want to do" or "I can't do anything very well"

You want to target a specialization, then list ancilliary skills (those that help you carry out your specialization) then list 'other' skills.

Most companies in my experience hire specialists (especially when it comes to 3D) for example texture artist, rigging, modelling, environments, effects, hard surface organics etc.. Even if you end up being a generalist your job still has a defined speciality.

Please forgive any typos, trying to get my baby to sleep as I type this.

Having spoken to a couple of people (I did not spend too much time with recruiters as I was there representing the company I work for). The average GDC attendee has a few years experience already which is why recruiters hit it hard (there are of course students there too, but the majority have 3+ years experience). If game design is your interest grab a level editor for something like NWN, Unreal etc.. And create something UNIQUE. Something with an engaging story line or new levels of interaction. Bioware for example has hired around 15 people from the NWN modding community to date.

Look at market trends and explore those. For example emrgent behaviour, and exploratory gameplay are hot topics. This is the concept of a game engine having player interaction opportunities that were not deliberately put in to the game, but are discovered by the player either accidentaly or through intentional exploration.

A very simple example of this is some of the physics in HalfLife 2. A deliberate form of this is the explosive barrels being used to kill the sticky tongue monsters. A better example would be the next Might and Magic game in which the ice spell led to monsters falling off ledges.

The example used by the chap giving the talk at GDC was a ghost recon video of a player that gets an NPC to say "A trap what does he think he is dealing with, Amateurs?" then the NPC kicks down a  trapped door and is sent hurtling down an elevator shaft on fire. This level of interation was not intended by the developers, but was discovered and explored by a player.

Yeah, I can't understand for the life of me why he'd want to work on a MMO that'll be free by 2007 anyway. ::::12::

I do not see a need to explain why this was locked.  Keep down the flaming.  Yeah, that would be great.
