If they didn't then they'd still have the ability to carry on as normal, just with a 90 next to their name instead of a 1. Would have also given them the ability to use armour and weapons in their shows as well...
I don't know, but it seems like all of you are missing what MIGHT be the most important thing about all of this: The entertainment community spoke, and for once, SOMETHING they said made a difference in what they were being given. Now, I'm sure this is shocking as all hell coming from me, one of the founding members of the SOE Hate Club, but this is as big a victory as Entertainers have ever had. They're not being forced into combat and they're getting back something that was taken away from them that they wanted very much to keep.
A step has been taken in the right direction for once. Those of you who never pursued Entertainment professions seriously as a main might not see this as a big deal, but I do, and I assure you, it should mean more to those who still cling to being entertainers in the game than it does to me, an embittered ex-player.
Is it a trend? I don't know. It's far too early to say. I'd like to think, for those who still play, that it is. But I'm jaded by hearing far too many promises and seeing far too little made good of them. So I can only say "wait and see". And maybe this time there really will be something to see. Who knows.

I completely disagree. Just what is it I am getting back? I've played a dancer since launch and I used to have the CHOICE to be a full entertainer or just play one facet of entertainer (dancer) AND carry a big flamethrower to burn stuff up with. I had several characters, some were full-blown entertainers and some were not. I no longer have this choice, nor do I have any real purpose in the game.
Giving us the chance to have a decent CL along with some combat would have given back part of that without disturbing those who still wanted to play full entertainer. I had full entertainers with no combat skills and they risked being killed if they ran around too much -- now I see many people exploiting the fact that they are non-aggro. This is just as much of an exploit as the AFK entertainer, but I don't see too many on the entertainer forum complaining about it.
It used to be my choice to be a full entertainer or a hybrid. Now I just get to dance in an empty cantina. Please explain what they just returned to me with this decision.

Aunti
P.S. Azhrarn, this was not meant as a flame, I am just so THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED with SOE and tired of way they handle things that I know this came across as being angry. My anger is directed at them, not at you.

As far as I am aware, the vocal majority of entertainers protested loud and long against being forced into a combat role, especially in light of comments made by devs that suggested that the profession would be morphed into some halfassed version of bard in the future publishes. I also recall hearing that a number of favorite dances had already been removed from the entertainer's repetoire, which also made a large number of entertainers very upset.
You may expect (and the expectation IS reasonable) that more should be given back to a much-abused profession, but ANY response that gives the profession something back that has been taken away from it is a positive step. They are at the very least doing lip service now. Which is something you cannot claim has been done for the entertainers since the advent of the NGE. Some would say that this neglect stretches back far before the CU hit, but there are people who would just love to debate that and I don't feel like arguing with people who don't like entertainers in the first place.
Have the entertainers recieved what they are due? No. I think not. But at this point ANY positive action is a big freaking deal. Are we going to get the pre-CU or per-NGE game back? Pigs will fly sooner and if people are still playing the game at all, they are of a cut that should praise any positive step, no matter how small it might be, because they're supporting something that's a ghost of the game it used to be. Is this going to lure me back? Fat chance. It would take a reinstatement of pre-CU to do that and they aren't about to give up on their new monstrosity to please the likes of me or the thousands like me who quit after being used to finance their live alpha tinkering for too long.
PS /chuckle didn't take it as a flame. It's an honor to be debating with the infamous Darth Velveeta.

Since when was something "too bugged" for SOE to release? LOL

Yes, I agree that taking out the lower versions of the dances was a terrible idea but I disagree that they were being forced into a combat role. Those who didn't want to participate in combat still had the option to be non-combatant, however, they would no longer be non-aggro. Not allowing me to participate in combat in any meaningful way is just that. I am the one who is being forced into a role and I deeply resent it.
In general (to my knowledge), MMORPGs do not have anything resembling this type of profession included in their game. I certainly don't want to argue whether that is fair or right or not tapping into what I think could be a huge market for an MMO looking to include those who would play simply for a social vehicle in an MMO; most don't and I for one am grateful that we've had a chance to explore that aspect in SWG and would like to see it at least continue to be included in the game.
I am of the opinion that many of the entertainers' problems have been brought upon themselves. The arrogance and cliquesh attitudes of the entertainers on the forums are definitely off-putting. I'm tired of them trying to direct my gameplay. I'm tired of them trying to tell me when it is appropriate or not appropriate to /flourish, /smile/ or /inserteffecthere. We actually had one dancer on our server that would run people out of the Theed cantina for /singing.
My father used to tell me if I had time to complain about the way other people were doing things I had too much time on my hands and should look to my own behavior. In my opinion, if someone wants to be an AFK player it's their business. I didn't but that's just me. I don't like exploiters but if I went around yelling all day about exploiters it would just end up ruining my day. I'm sick of listening to the entertainers' whine and I'm hoping the devs don't just decide we're too much of a bother for them to spend time catering to us.
Are there things about the original profession I had gripes with ... sure. Nothing is ever going to be perfect. But I'm tired of seeing the wonderful freedoms I had pre-CU continue to be whittled away at by a small group who have decided they don't like that freedom.
My household used to have 21 accounts. Many of those were entertainers (all of whom I love and some of whom I miss). I hope the Devs won't just throw up their hands and say, "ENOUGH!" and cut us out completely. Unfortunately, I'm afraid we may see this happen. I don't trust SOE's backpeddaling here. I'm afraid this is just an excuse to continue not giving us anything. I hope I am wrong.
Why don't they just let an entertainer pick up a second class, so that if they want to play in combat they can. I mean a person can be a good dancer and a good fighter if they worked hard couldn't they? They could probably do the same for trader for those traders that may want to fight. I can think of probably a couple dozen of new secondary classes they could add for those that wanted something different then what the base class offered. Like if you were wanted to use pistols all the time, you could pick up the pistol class, or if you liked to use carbines, you could pick up the class that specialized in carbines. Maybe even have a class that specialized in the hunting of animals....
Velveeta gave me an amazingly wonderful gift once, when I was most in need of that gift. Velveeta made me laugh. So I'll always love Velveeta, though I never got the pleasure of crossing weapons with her, dancing for her or building something nifty for her. So I owe her.
I think there's a lot of truth in what you say. I've had the displeasure of trading hot words with people who thought their opinion of what a musician should do and be was more important than what I thought being one should entail. I never let one of them chase me from a cantina or stop one of my odd performances. And I did sing. Often. Whether it was "Bestine, Bestine" or "the Girl From Jundland Wastes" broken by random interludes of standup comedy and heavy drinking and spice use, I was, while I was a musician, a spot of local colour that some people enjoyed seeing and I very much enjoyed playing.
Lest you get the wrong idea, I have always been irate over having had my choice about whether or not I wished to engage in any kind of combat revoked. The CU irritated me when it limited my character's flexibility, renderring my original character broken if she was to remain true to the RP of who and what she was (an Imperial Hairdresser who could look out for herself in a tough spot without having to rely on the offers of protection made by suitors, customers and random do-gooders) and the NGE renderred ALL of my play options null and void by destroying all of my hybrid characters. No more dancer-TKs, no more ID-tailors, no more dancing gypsies (scout-dancer), no more farm vetenarians (CH-doc).... everything that I cared to play was invalidated, and worse, had I cared to play the sad options they'd left, well I couldn't do that either because of their horrible combat system's lack of mercy on my hands and wrists.
So you won't hear me thanking them for any of that. But I try to be reasonable and allow room for people who can still play and who want their game to improve. I try very hard not to be angry with them for being at least partially responsible for having had every reason I had to play the game removed or butchered. I'm not always successful, but I do strive to keep that to a bare minimum. And sometimes, like today, I try to be encouraging. Because I'm a big dorkette who actually cares if they get some fun and who while I may hate what has become of SWG, still loves Star Wars.

I'm sad I didn't have the pleasure of meeting you in-game and very sorry I never got to hear you perform -- it sounds like something I would have very much enjoyed.
You don't remotely qualify for the title "dorkette." LOL
My problem with all of this is that they will let yet another PUBLISH go past with nothing of note to add to the game for its long suffering professions. Sure, what meager and ill conceived ideas they threw together were pulled - possibly due to the community speaking but more likely a mix of that and the exploit factor. Whats that amount to? More lost time in the history of this game. Promises made and lost - all of which is on the subscribers' dime.
Imagine what they could accomplish if they actually came to some kind of mutual agreement with the community on something - worked on it and then released it to a prepare and notified public? What you witness today is a prime example of how they are mismanaged and out of touch with their player base. Hell, I am not entirely sure they know who their playerbase is. To them, is it the disaffected long time players whose seen the worst SOE management has to offer and hope each day for the best or is it those mythical WoW millions who will come rushing in once the powers that be find the right combination of bling and glitter?
Simple truth is that this was time spent working on a PUBLISH. Not a patch, not a hotfix or anything else of that like. A publish is supposed to be substance and encourage forward progression in the game. It was squandered and all the Ents got out of it was a typical Smuggler cut and paste - we have bigger and better things to plan for this profession at a later date. Hell, if I were an Ent - I would actually be worried when they actually do sit down to hammer out details for content and revamps. Last time we saw that happen, Rangers found themselves on the other side of the rifles.
You know, I guess I visit this forum and read everyday secretly hoping for one of two things. One is that someone somewhere suddenly realizes that this isn't how to handle an MMORPG and really truly starts to listen and work at the same time. Then one PUBLISH at a time - perhaps the game will get better and things will change. However, having been bitten by the same dog repeatedly and getting the same explanation by its owner repeatedly also has me checking the site for the day when someone puts this dog down.

I think you give them too much credit Sweetie!
That's your opinion and I respect it! But they've had 3 YEARS! to take those "first steps in the right direction". Why now? I think it's because they are at a point where they just can't afford to loose any more subs.
SOE knows what you like... You don't! And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
I don't for once believe they actually had a working version of this even able to push. Anyone play it on test?
I bet they just scuttled something they never even planned on making work just to look like heroes.
"The people spoke out" Yeah.. been there, done that.. they never listened before. NEVER.

If you read between the lines in the posts from the few devs left on SWG, they are saying that there are not enough hours in the day to do much more than provide a few enhancements to Jedi and BH.
It should be obvious at this point that the budget for enhancing this game was severally reduced. I doubt they even have the staff to effectively test what changes the developers would like to make.
This game fell through the rabbit hole, you can try to follow the white rabbit and meet the Mad Hatter (Smed) but there is not much else to look forward to.

P.S. ROFL, Velveeta was a hoot.

Who knows.
NEVER.

It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me.
I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.
