This is why good old games like AO and UO are still around and kicking, they have fantastic gameplay. Even WoW isnt that great in the graphics department but holy crap can Blizzard tell a great story. The lore behind WoW is fantastic.

I'd rather have both be pretty good than have one be stellar and the other crap.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story. So PM me if you are starting one.
Gameplay is most important, great gameplay with acceptable graphics beats great graphics and acceptable gameplay any day.
But that said, graphics matters as well. A great game with 15 years old graphics will still fail badly if we are talking about MMOs. You might get off a turned based strategy game or something minecrafty with that crappy graphics but a new successful MMO can't look older then a regular game from 2010 or so.
Gameplay come first, otherwise the many great indie-games i'm playing wouldn't be so much fun to me.
As to the graphics... i think for me its more about "artstyle". I have seen games with great graphics that did not appeal to me and i love some games that have not top-of-all-things graphics, but an art style that totally draws me into their world.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; graphics means jack if your game play only attracts players for 2 weeks before they move on to another game. What's the point of putting all the work force on creating real life graphics on a game when you know 95% of the player base won't be able to run it properly unless they put all graphic settings to bare minimum? And since all the work went in to graphics and not game play, it's normal people say graphics suck along with game play, because they had to set everything to minimum in order to launch the game properly without any issues. Yes, BUG CONTROL is part of game play, if your game is filled with bugs due to graphical over sights, then it will affect game play experience for everyone not running a 5,000$ rig.
I've got to have both. Bad graphics or bad game play are not for me. I prefer modern graphics, anything less feels like going backwards to me. A game with non-intuitive, slow, or awkward combat mechanics feels more like punishment then fun.

If a game is beautiful and boring, it's not a good game. If a game has good mechanics but looks like poop, then it's not a good game either. There's a balance between gameplay and art-style. I get so tired of lazy devs pulling out the 8-bit graphics because they can't be bothered to have an art-style.

Yea .. Gameplay for sure , is why i still play UO , and frequently revisit AC , AO ..... etc ...
And wow ... overwhelming votes for Game play ... Devs pay attention ...........
Being a developer, wrong.... Game play does not sell....So understand how business works in game development, graphics sells.....I want game play as much as the next guy, but it doesn't always sell, graphics sell....... So that is why AAA companies even go for graphics first......I don't agree with this I would rather have game play, but to many people today whine if the game has bad graphics.... even if the game play is amazing...

Lazy?? priceless...... Love for you to make a game....I'm begging for some of you Mister know it alls to make a game....I challenge you to make a game with amazing graphics and game play....and with your own money...since WE developers are so LAZY....
I think a game should have both stellar graphics and gameplay. I expect nothing less in 2016. If a game does not have that balance maybe.....no...in my opinion there is no excuse, no one over the other. Go all the way or don't go at all I say. Yin and Yang my friends, Yin and Yang....

Well, It's more like getting your audience's attention is what makes money and of course, what better way to do that than... graphics. Nobody says "*throws money at screen*" at a design doc like the do of a graphical demo.

The question wasn't about some imagine how it is in the land of fairies and rainbows type of question. I felt we were asking what is important to each of us not what do we imagine is important to the industry. But it is great you got to toot your own horn!

So gameplay >artstyle > graphics for me.
What's more important, eating or food taste? Duh!

The question can push the intellect to the limits sometimes. Can you try to work out a better answer?

It's too bad graphic quality depends on how much money you have rather than how far we've come.
I will be waiting for your game to be released..
