Well I guess this is ok for console peasantry, but all they are doing is upscaling 1080 to 4k. Since all titles have to be backwards compatible they have to be playable on the old ps4. This really is much to do about nothing. The new ps4 wouldn't get decent frame rates at true 4k anyway. I guess consoles will have to wait a few more years for what pc gamers have already had for awhile now. Sucks for you guys.

It isn't all that necessary though that's the good thing. If you have a 4k TV and really want HDR support those would be the main reasons for it. And a little bit better graphic support.

Its not a little bit better it's twice as powerful as the original PS4. If we were talking about a PC we would be going from bottom range to mid range.

Is it worth the money, yes if you can afford it and want to experience sonyVR at it's finest.

this is of course after they forced No Man's Sky into being a turd on normal ps4...

They talked so much about 4K and HDR but the Xbox One S already has it. Right Now.

Scorpio is not out yet and the One S already does what Sony Pro is going to do. (Minus the very powerful graphics bump)

Plus the Playstation 4 Pro will not play 4K BluRay but the Xbox One S already does and so will the Scorpio.

Kind of underwhelmed as a current PS4 owner.

You really don't understand, aren't you ? The 4k BlueRay is a limited market (yet) and Sony didn't want to risk by adding it and also increasing the console price ( See PS3 ) . They did exactly what they needed to do and that is support for VR, 4k games , HDR , increase in graphics a lot , etc .

That , I am very happy to see, because it seems they keep the console primary for gamers! In terms of games, PS4 was already better at handling games in comparation with Xbox One. Now that Xbox One S didn't upgraded the graphics and remained on the old chip from Xbox One, PS4 PRO with his double graphics in comparation with PS4, will just smash Xbox (One or S), in terms of games.

And that is all about when it comes to consoles , games! If you want to watch movies, media, etc , just use other alternatives. PS4(PRO) is for gamers!

Not going to buy it unless my current ps4 breaks down. As long new games are playable on the old one I see no reason to change.

Unless you have a 60" or larger monitor and sit less than 10 feet from it you won't be able to tell the difference between a 1080p and a 4k picture.  4k is for really big monitors or TV's.  Not the stuff we play games on, so the 4k is pretty much just marketing hype.

The graphics bump though should provide better fps etc.

The above obviously spoken by someone with only 1080p and no reference comparison to 4K. You couldn't be more wrong.

And to Wizardry above that, so wrong. It's not hype or trend, it's not similar to VR. It is the absolute natural progression of visual fidelity in our output devices. No different than 1080p that you now take for granted.

I dont know why people are bent on a newer generation console. Did they really think the " 10 year lifespan" was gonna last?

I build a new gaming PC every 3 or 4 years if not sooner. Why should a ps4, which costs about 1/ 3rd of what a decent gaming PC costs, not have an upgraded option for people who want one.

To me buying a new console at $400 bucks every 3 years isnt bad at all. If you cant afford one then just dont buy it, all the same games will work and be connected to PSN with the older models.

I will probably end up picking one up sometime or another, wont be day one tho.

Firstly - @SBFord, I wish you had not closed the thread in the Hardware section, in what appears to be an attempt to drive traffic to this article. Those discussions take a very different view on things than a general discussion tends to, and you just killed it in one fell stroke.

That being said, I was pretty excited about a 4k version - but it doesn't support 4k Blu-Ray from what I'm hearing, and that kills half the excitement for me.

I don't get this outrage over a better version of the Playstation 4. It baffles me why in this day and age people get so angry when they wanted to buy something earlier and when something better comes along they are are infuriated for not waiting to get the better version.

I like to see people get in a tissy over Vive vs Oculus

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I'm guessing you don't own a 4k display? Nothing you said, except your last sentence, is true.

People are weird like that, they often do not do things on necessity but more so to be part of some hype trend, the IN thing, sort of like everyone owning cell phones now and treating them better than their children, hugging it holding it,cuddling it.
It would be like some dude coming up to me "hey look i bought 50 lottery tickets",i would be like  "yeah good job, good investment ...lmao".

I look at 4k like i see the VR hype,a complete waste of money.People all have their individual pumped up kicks, some minute things/ideas get people all excited, everyone is different, for some watching paint dry is exciting, for others spending money on anything new or hyped is exciting, seldom ever makes logical sense though.
That's literally what people said about 1080p displays when they first came out. You could not be more wrong as this is the natural evolution of visual fidelity. 4k displays are cheap as all get out now anyway.

Same! Even worse, we've got 3 in our house. Just bought the most recent this past Christmas. Guess one of my other kids will be getting a fuckin' sweet second-hand Christmas gift this year, lol. My youngest said he wants a PS4 anyway and my wife is always looking for gift ideas for me so sounds like a win-win.

We got the Uncharted bundle edition. I've upgraded the hdd to 2TB too. I've wanted a second one for the main room, but now I want to wait. Both this and the XB1 S seem like kneejerk reactions to technology trends and not thoughtful well planned version increments. They both have a couple of design flaws that are annoying and it makes me wonder if there will be a more polished version sometime next year.

Being completely honest on the situation, though, as long as they created a system that was backwards compatible, I don't care if they ship a new system every 3 years. I'll probably buy it, too. My biggest gripe is that I need to abandon EVERYTHING and start over. This is where the PC still has a considerable edge, in my opinion. I buy my shit on steam and if I upgrade my computer, I just have to re-download, I don't need to shell out another $1000 in games, lol.

Will these hardware revs mean a step towards the idea of backwards compatibility? Who knows. Hopefully.

The Scorpio is going to thrash the PS Pro so your point is moot. Xbox One is also for gamers. Xbox Scorpio is going to be the most powerful console ever.

    PS4 Pro will feature:
4.2 TFLOPS of processing power, HDR and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, PS4 Pro will not support 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. The only way to watch 4K video is by streaming through an app like Netflix or YouTube.

    Xbox Scorprio will feature:

Features 6 TFLOPS of processing power,HDR, 4K BluRay, Project Scorpio will be, on paper, approximately 43 percent more powerful than the PS4 Pro. Dramatically increased memory bandwidth. With more info to come.

So looking at what they both offer and as an owner of both the PS4 and the XBox One, I am more inclined to wait for the Scorpio since it looks to be a better 'step up' in the console cycle than the Pro.

Hard to get excited about any of that when I've been enjoying 11.5 teraflops for well over a year and a half now on my PC @ 3440x1440.

Now that I think about it, neither 4.2 nor 6 teraflops really sound like much power for 4K. There just haven't been enough games to make me want a current gen system yet. Will be interesting what devs do with the new power afforded to them in each system.
  • VyntVynt Member UncommonPosts: 757
The new systems kind of took different paths, neither of which I like.

The ps4 pro can upscale games to 4k, but not play 4k movies. I used my ps3, ps4 for a bluray player probably more than gaming. The 4k market in movies is still pretty slim, so not that big of a deal, but the next 1 better have it.

The xbox1 s can play 4k movies, but not on all 4k displays I noticed, only specific ones. Unsure how big of a deal that is tbh, haven't looked into it. The odd thing though is the xbox1 s won't upscale games.
Then there is the scorpio next year which will do more.

I find it odd people are comparing the ps4 pro to the scorpio when it should probably be compared to the xbox1 s that just came out. Odds are Sony will release another higher end ps4 to compete moreso against the scorpio late next year or early 2018. They just didn't announce it way in advance like Microsoft did.

I could see having an XBox though if it were powerful enough to be my PC gaming platform. Buying or renting movies and media on Win10 is really easy so I could see it for streaming too.
I hope we're coming to a time when an Xbox is really just going to be a Microsoft  branded PC.

I'll have a lot more interest in a console when they are "inclusive" not "exclusive"

I feel like that too. I would actually like to move back to Macs and just use Microsoft and Sony for gaming / media.

In Happy Unicorn Fantasy Land I want one piece of hardware I need to connect to the TV. From that I could launch Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, iTunes, VUDU, Amazon, or whatever other platform I wanted to access.
It would be nice if we could purchase  Playstation, Nintendo OS's etc. for our rigs, where we could just boot up and play the games we like.

One rig to rule them all and in the darkness bind them ;)
