The problem is also that many crowd funded MMORPGs are not producing good products as it is so people just are not longer taking a chance.  This is what happens when we have countless crowd funded MMORPGs instead of a handful at best.

I'm also not sure that using Indiegogo was the best choice. Given his name, Smedley might have been able to pull off a funding round with Fig -- it looks like a fantastic game and one that a lot of people would play "despite" the 8-bit look.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was looking good. I was even thinking...I gotta donate, the price is lower then what I think it should be. Then I saw the part about permadeath and closed the page. I think permadeath is why the the game did not get funded.

To those who know anything about the gaming industry, the name 'Smedley' does not echo with the ring of quality. From SWG to Landmark, everything turns to shit when explosed to 'That touch of Smedley'.

Personally I overlook the name Smedley for this game as he is not developing it alone and still looks fun with friends.

I backed it, but I must admit probably 1 reason this probably didn't reach its goal or even really that close to it was because the middle tier packages just did not offer anything worth getting.

I know how they said they didn't want to give away "exclusive" founder items and stuff which I can respect, but most people are not gonna pay additional funds to buy it for friends (they can buy it for themselves when they want to) or for a t-shirt, soundtrack and wallpaper pack etc. This made it so most just bought the base 15$ game and your gonna need a lot of people doing that to get a good number of $$$.

    [mod edit]

Matrix Online - at the time, one of the world's most immensely rich cinematic IPs, run into the ground and taken offline within three years.

SWG - gigantic, true open world MMO with Star Wars IP destroyed almost overnight by New Game Enhancements designed to make it like WoW.

Vanguard - bought half-finished from buddy; neglected and under-resourced; still managed to limp along with hardcore of supporters until SOE decided to 'monetise' it. Instant collapse in revenues, shuttered.

FreeRealms - got four million to sign up, had to be cancelled because of crass strategaic planning by someone...

Everquest Next.... My god! Do I really need to go on?

And what do all these catastrophic failures - and I could name many more from POTBS to Landmark - have in common?

Why, that pie-faced failure, John Smedley.

Who the hell is gonna give 200k to a game that looks like that. It's 2016 FFS!! The legend of Zelda looks better smh...

    I dont get it.
He says they need 200k to make the game.
    Only gets 94k.
Then he says the game is still going to be made.

Most obvious conclusion is that they didnt need any money at all.

Since it seems everyone here does not know.

John already secured $2.8 Mil. in funding for this title. This was just a final opportunity for some additional funding to get some extra content for EA and the like.

This is why John states that the game will still be made. So, yes, they did not "need" any of this money to complete the title.

Dont care. Will play it and bet it will be good.

Its basically smaller scope version of EQN

Anyone that thinks the name John Smedley inspires confidence has been living under a rock since the turn of the century. This is the same guy who had his plane grounded because trolls were threatening to blow it up. That's about the level of respect and love this guy has in the gaming community. They would have raised more money if they had left his name out of it completely. Most people credit him with the downfall of SoE, and with it the Everquest franchise. RIP.

I find it so funny to see the picture endorsing FFXIV right above this horrible looking game, they look like one was made with millions and modern while this looks like 1980 and with a $2500 budget.

"confidence" ???Certainly not, when i see Smedley i see a guy trying to sell crap, treating us like some dummies that he can pull the wool over our eyes.
I am just really sad that while others "years ago",mainly because of SWG saw how terrible this guy is,for me it took too many years and too much money lost to realize it.
I would bet anything that even Daybreak is feeling bitter that they were coerced by Smedley into buying a failing business.Of course DB would not admit it at this point because that would admit they are failing, however ask them what they think of John a couple years from now.
What really bothers me a LOT is that the EQ series was imo pretty much Brad, yet John got the money and brought the people together but we never hear brad's name mentioned.IMO Brad tried VERY hard with VG,weather some feel he succeeded with little money or not,he is still imo a MUCH bigger man than John will ever be.

Don't think I can bring myself to play a game that looks like this but I wish Smedley all the luck.

I am quite enjoying seeing Smedley get a taste of the real world when he doesnt have Sony backing him with millions of dollars.  It cracks me up when people defend him because they liked a game or two that SOE made while he was there.  He was a terrible CEO, he lost a ton of money for Sony and that is why his division was sold off.  He is so disconnected with gamers it is almost laughable.

I hope he ends up suffering from the curse of the soft poo for a few months.  That might clear out some of his BS.  I'd like to think this has all been a humbling experience for him but I dont think someone with that much hubris can ever wake up.

The Curse of SWG keeps following Smedley. :pleased:

I hate the permadeath garbage. I'm trying to play a game, not a race to the grave simulator.
Smed inspires the exact opposite of confidence in me. There are plenty of reasons for that, and all of them were his doing. I can be suspicious of what he did as CEO, but that's not exactly something I'm privy too. However, his actions I have seen show him to be an unstable person with an anger issue, and poor judgement.
This game is extremely retro/pixel jaggie mess, but it might still be interesting. Again, the permadeath is a total turnoff, but I 'might' be willing to try the game. But with this much retro without anything I can see to give it some oomph, I doubt it will do well.
This being yet another funding failure, and after the last failure him having said they secured all the funding they needed via some other means, it makes me even more nervous about it ever coming to market in a playable complete form. (Just go read the kickstarter on it if you don't know the message I'm talking about.)
Yes it's true, I have a very bad opinion of smed, but I'm willing to give the actual devs some credit and see what they can do despite him.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

But multiple failed funding rounds is majorly discouraging for the devs

This was for free promotion and marketing. They were already funded. Any funds from this campaign was gravy.

Each to their own, but for those who are complaining about permadeath, lucky you, there's plenty of non-permadeath games for you to go and enjoy. Permadeath the the main reason I did back this one, very exciting for those of us not scared of a real challenge :p

8-bit retro styles is the rage with indie titles, most successful crowd funded titles have retro styles. That's not what is driving people away from this, it's the name Smedley....
