Why MMO over Multiplayer?

Why are we trying to re-invent terms?

Single-player games rely more heavily on compelling stories to draw the player into the experience and to create a sense of investment.

multiplayer game has several players,[1] who may be independent opponents or teams.

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are a combination of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual world.

There are many terms that describe the type of game and it's intended use. Games like LOL are massive in nature but merely multiplayer in action and single-player in development.

I prefer MMOG/MMORPG because I like people. I like teaching, being taught, exploring, conquering, crafting, building and bowling.

(There is not a single game in existence that can satisfy all things I like under one title. So, this is why we choose one type over another -for instance.)

I also play chess on the sanctioned world league...Can't get that in WoW.

Sometimes, I just want to not deal with other people...I breakout my SKYRIM and just in case I change my mood, there are others a mouse click away.

Anymore questions? Find me at Helbreath USA -Level 200 Mage.

    MMO = an adventure (ideally)
Multiplayer = ususally, a waste of time, like World of Tanks. A pointless "Sisyphus" task usually.

Only multiplayer game that is good, is the Sa-Matra Wasteland mission in Arma 3 (has its own laucher).

@gamer54321 The main difference between the two is persistence.  Multiplayer games suck because the world does not "continue" without you.

HMMM... good topic. There are games like dragon nest that's a dungeon base so you wouldn't see any player on open world that much. And dungeon has limited number of player slot per instance. But you see, MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online so player population is essential to make it work because if there is like less than 50 players in-game the economy of the game is not that good there will be scarcity in items and eventually game will die. Also, players are like athlete they love to compete with one another for domination. That's why there are factions and guild systems in-game. Like in MU Origin there are some guild who dominate crystal mine and there are some who dominate castle siege.

I liked MMO because the drama . When the drama gone , i gone .

LOL... /agree!   MMOs without drama are boring!  Guilds without drama are boring!  Groups, Raids, Clans, Kinships, Fellowships, Pods, Hives, Events, etc without drama are boring!

    Sz  :)
Ah see. I like a guild to be chill internally but to have external drama to deal with together. That's the perfect storm for me.

You have a bunch of chill guys you can hang out with whenever you log on but you still have that enemy that "must die" to give you a reason to care about the game.

I pretty much can only play MMO's now. Besides NHL games, and that is pretty rarely as well. I love the community aspect of MMO's, and  to know that I never will truly "beat" the game for years if ever.

Imagine taking a vacation to Paris. Now imagine only 6 people live in Paris. Not much fun. That is why I like highly populated mmos. The people are a big part of the content.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Both gametypes have their advantages. Playing something fun with some friends is always nice but it is hard to get everyone together for all sessions.

Meeting new people can also be very fun and in MMOs there will always be others around.

I don't think I would say one is better then the other, they are just different and I play both types of games.

    Persistence.
Being able to play/roleplay a unique character.

When it comes to the number of players: The more the merrier.
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.
