My life in The Elder Scrolls Online didn't start too well. After logging into my character - who transpires to be a level 15 night elf - I accidentally shot a guard with my bow. Entirely unintentional as I tried to discover how to turn my HUD on, I'd only be in Daggerfall for 60 seconds and already had a bounty on my head.

Doh! Wood Elf :D - old habits die hard ;) In all seriousness, I'm a total beginner when it comes to The Elder Scrolls Online. I haven't played it since launch and only then played it briefly for a couple of days. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the game besides what I'm learning through play - I've also intentionally avoided trying to read up on the game externally to get a total beginner experience.

The typo, I get. But why tune out after you see a new player gets a bounty on his head? That's the idea of a column exploring how ESO feels to a newbie.

Except for the occasionally "its dead", "pvp sucks" comments, people usually say alot of good things about this game.
ESO seems to be one of the few games that are always worth giving a try and don't cause you too much trouble even if you are late to the party.

I liked the article, as i generally like it when people share their newbie-experiences with any game.

About time to fix the animations, so that i can have my newbie experience, too!

I played it for 2,5 years, and I don't reccomend t if you want to play an MMO game. It's not a real MMO, it's solo questing park zone with no end-game (well, you have trials, hightly unbalanced pieces of crap). BUT, if you like to run around solo or with friend, then give it a try. Otherwise, don't.

Couldn't disagree more. In fact, I think ESO has become the best playing TES game of the series. More content, more story, freedom, better crafting, multiplayer, soon housing. It's like 3-4 TES single player games wrapped in one.

    But that's just IMO.

That is a nice thing to say but the pvp sucks and the game is dead.

I should have mentioned that i was talking about 3rd person view and my beta experience.
In the beta, i found them to be rather wodden/stiff/clunky and just not well rounded altogether. The character's overall posture looked awkward to me. This played into combat as well and made fights feel like everything was not really "connected" too well.
2H combat and greatsword swinging looked like the sword had no weight to it. My nightblade used the same animation for a variety of attacks and it seemed like there was a lack of variation in animations in general. It's like everything shares the same handful of moves. Walking, strafing, bow shooting...it all looked like in a title of rather low quality.

Zenimax seem to have the same bad luck in this department as Bethesda previously had with Fallout or Skyrim.

Other than that, there was alot that i liked about the game, esp. the immersive environment and character building. Not sure if it lead up to cookie cutter/FOTM builds anyway, but in beta i had the impression that the game provides a huge diversity in builds and very interesting possibilities.

I just reinstalled yesterday (played almost a week past launch before uninstalling). Animations still seem clunky and there just feels like a lot of ability lag. I'll try giving it another couple of days to see if it catches.

I don't think its quite as alive feeling or as beautiful as Skyrim, but I agree that the game brings a lot more to the table than the single player games. Despite some of the posts here making it sound like its all solo or only play with a friend, its as solo as you want it to be. There are plenty of activities that require playing in groups. If the world felt just a little bit more random with a pinch of more aliveness to it, I would still be playing now..but NOTHING can take me away from the Witcher 3 right now, including my Oculus Rift lol.

I restarted after reading this article. The game is popping, I just did a quest in the middle of nowhere, and like 30 people were there, pretty insane considering before you couldn't find anyone around for hours

Do I need to sub yet? I am just doing the zone I left off in only level 16 as of now
also is there a MMORPG guild around?

    Welcome to ESO, Lewis!

Since you're asking for advice, I'll happily offer you some. I have been playing ESO since it went buy-to-play.

    1. Spend some time in your Settings menu. Particularly, read all the setting possibilities in the Gameplay, Interface, and Nameplates subcategories. There, you'll find settings to always have your skill bar visible, show floating incoming/outgoing damage/healing, show player names and health bars overhead, or not, auto-loot, there's even a setting that prevents you from attacking innocent npcs (so you don't have to worry about accidentally shooting anyone again).

    2. For build help, check out Deltia and Alcast. If you Google their names, their sites will pop right up. They both make lots of build videos for all the classes in ESO. Deltia is a little more new-player friendly, but either way, if you get a vision of what you want your endgame build to look like you can be working towards that as you level.

    3. If you're on PC, there are indeed LOTS of worthwhile addons. I play with 23 on! Your best bet is to download the Minion addon manager from esoui.com. You can search addons by popularity or most recently updated. Some addons just make life easier, like "Skyshards" which shows all Skyshard locations on your map, so you don't have to guess at the cryptic hints given in on the achievements page (of course, some people like hunting for them like that, in which case, don't get that addon). Others can give you more info in your UI, like FTC and Srendarr. This can take you out of the immersion a bit though, so it's a trade-off. Most effects in combat have visual cues that you will learn just by watching your character or enemies, but it's nice to have something like Srendarr or Buff Timers to show you when your buffs/debuffs or long duration attacks are about to fall off so you can be ready to apply them quickly. I believe ZOS is working on developing a buff timer option for all platforms, but it will be a while before they release it.

    4. Combat in ESO uses a global cool-down system based on character animations. Skills themselves don't have a cool-down, but if you fire one skill and then immediately try to fire another, the second won't start until the animation for the first one is over. You can perform "animation cancelling" by blocking, bar swapping, or roll dodging, and this can help you to fire skills slightly faster. It does take some practice to get your timing right, but after a while you learn the pace at which you can reliably fire abilities. You can also "weave" your regular weapon attacks between your skills. By hitting your left mouse button just before using a skill, you get an attack in that will hit almost at the same time as the skill, increasing your overall damage output over just hitting skills alone. One of the attractions of the ESO combat system is there actually is some player skill involved in learning these timing and action combinations, and it really does amount to a pretty sigificant difference in damage.

    5. Join some guilds ASAP. You can be in up to five player guilds at once, and there is no reason not to get in some right away. Just say you're looking to join a guild in zone chat, particularly in the capitol city zones (Grahtwood, Deshaan, and Stormhaven) and you're bound to get some invitations. This will give you access to guild traders to sell items to other players and a guild-specific chat channel. People are usually more likely to help you out (like making you armor, etc.) if you ask in guild chat as opposed to zone chat, though (as you found) there are plenty of helpful people in zone chat as well.

Hopefully you'll find some of these tips helpful in your journey. Happy adventuring! :)

Hello and welcome back to ESO. I played the game from release to about a month into the game and I really enjoyed it but I had other games gathering my attention, so I quit the game. I decided to give it a go again about 8 months ago. Far before One Tamriel, The Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood updates....and I was hooked. I love crafting in any game and I am a bit of an online hoarder and collector. 8 months ago I heard of crafting items with Traits and crafted sets (which I highly suggest looking up). I have been researching traits and crafting powerful armor and weapon sets for friends and guildmates for months and in ESO, helping others makes the game seem much more alive. The game had a lot of players when I joined but I can easily admit that One Tamriel has flooded (in a great way) all of the zones with Life. There are helpful players to group with everywhere and the game is set up so that you don't have to be in a group to be helped by anyone in the area. As long as each person that hits a target does at least 1/4 of it's maximum health in damage before it dies, everyone gets experience and loot from that target (if it drops any loot). That's another way that the game encourages helping each other. Joining 5 guilds can be a great, awesome thing. Especially if you find at least three amazing ones. Although I really want to talk about the guilds I am in I won't but I highly suggest joining two large Trading guilds so that you can easily buy and sell goods to other players. Going to the ESO official forums and looking at the Guild Recruitment pages and the Character Mechanics forum and even quest forums can help you when you are lost, and typically people answer within minutes. In ESO players that *want to help are every where. This game is far, far from dead. It lives and thrives in every aspect. I highly suggest checking our Deltias and Alcast websites as well. They are awesome players and extremely helpful, even in the forums.

Yes... It held your attention and you got 2.5 years of enjoyment, but wouldn't recommend it. This made me laugh.

ESO is the best AAA MMO on the market. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I SO want to like this game and have tried starting up and playing it several times - both on PC and PS4. Last time was during the 2 week double-XP Halloween event. I just cannot get passed how static and generic, in my perception, the game is. To me, it's just super boring and I'm honestly really bothered by my own opinion but I just have to face that it's sadly not a game for me :(

I have found in my lifetime, that the beauty of hating stupid people is, that it crosses all racial boundaries.

I'm going to be frank: anyone who says the game is "dead" isn't playing the game. Even though I am American I play on the Euro server. It is packed during normal playtime hours. The cities are bustling. Zone chat is voluminous. I had to create separate chat tabs for 3 of my 5 guilds.

In my experience it is the most polished MMORPG on the market, and quite possibly of all time.

To date (this could change) the cash shop has been brilliantly executed.

For $15 a month you get access to all the DLC and the Craft Bag. The craft bag alone is worth it if you are a hoarder/ into crafting.

Even if you simply buy the game and never spend another penny, the base game will easily entertain all but the most ravenous of content devourers for 2 or 3 months.

I wish more online games were this good. TESO shines a light on how malnourished the genre truly is.

ESO is actually a good game.
I criticized it in the past because it wasn't Skyrim Online.
I still think they could have done a much better job if they made a Sandbox rather than a Themepark, but to me that's the best Themepark at the moment and with One Tamriel (Mobs Scaling) the game got much better.
The Cash Shop is absolutely spot on, and if you subscribe you don't need the cash shop at all (You get 1500 free crown monthly anyway if you want to buy extras).

  • LheiahLheiah Member UncommonPosts: 190
Your in for a wonderful experience. In all honesty, just play the game, it will all come in time. There's nothing that can't be undone. There are some QoL addons out there, but each one you install will remove an aspect of the game the designers intended, so tread lightly in that area until you are certain that is what you want to do.
