Rank Your Top 3 Best Looking MMOs

After playing ESO on the free weekend and gushing over how good looking that Game is, it got me thinking about what other mmos are really good looking that I have no idea about, what better way to find out than to see other people's opinions.

My Top 3 Best Looking MMOs:

GW2
ESO
BDO
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

    1. Star Citizen - Not actually out but even just the testable stuff that's out looks 10 times as good as any other MMO.
    2. ArcheAge - The prettiest MMO that's actually out I've played. Can't compare to BDO because I never tried it. Hands down better than ESO and GW2 though.
    3. EVE - Consistent graphics updates have kept this aged game looking very sharp. It helps that there are less moving characters and more solid unchanging objects.

Interesting, sounds like I'll have to play Archeage at some point just for the graphical experience

I'd say obviously Star Citizen for me; not out yet but very strong on the art/design section.

I think overall BDO does have a good design on the game world / characters.
And GW2 while graphically weak, the game world is still very well designed.

Try it December 10th. There is a big expansion coming out then and they are releasing a new server that you have to have a new account to play on. It's a freemium game and while I don't suggest playing without a sub if you really like it, there is no harm in trying it for free.

If you really like customizing your character's face though, expect to spend considerable time making your character. Both character appearances I've made have an uncanny resemblance to me IRL because I took a couple hours making it so.

For me the best looking MMO's out there are:
    ArcheAge
MU Origin especially the Magic Knight
Scarlet Blade sadly it was closed. I haven't got the underwear unlocker for this game.

Top 3, for me i would say the best looking game is BDO, for all its faults, and it has a shed load, it is a beautiful game, and as a trader travelling the roads between the cities i saw a lot of it, the day/night cycles, the weather, the towns and villages, just stopping at a farm to pick up some trade goods, the detail of the game is amazing, for all of that i have to rate it as my 1. best looking game out there.
For 2nd and 3rd i am torn between Eve Online and FFXIV:ARR, as each is spectacular in its own right, but in completely different ways, so i'll put them as joint 2nd.

    1. BDO
    2. Eve Online/FFXIV;ARR.

  • RidelynnRidelynn Member EpicPosts: 7,383
FFXIV ARR takes the cake for me, it still surprises me occasionally.

I kinda like WoW's stylized graphics, especially with the new updates. It's not photorealism or anything, but I think they do very well sticking to their theme, and have great attention to detail.

And I wouldn't disagree with Eve either, I always thought the ships and stations looked amazing.

BDO,  Project Genom (I like the atmosphere, although it's not complete), and unlikely as it is, I like the fun nature of trove (Don't crucify me too bad).  I know it isn't great graphics, but they nailed what they went for IMO and I enjoy them for what they are.

    1. World of Warcraft (I know its kinda cartoony. But it came out about the same time EQ2 did and looks 1000x better. Its graphics/artstyle makes it so the graphics don't age nearly as fast as "realistic" graphics do. Because of this, it runs great and also looks great. Legion and Draenor areas both look AMAZING. Downside is typical lame basic character creator)

    2. Star Citizen. I've only played alpha and it looks amazing. While it IS realistic, but because it uses Cryengine...even Crysis 1 still looks amazing to this day, especially with some mods added. Downside? My PC runs it at 10-15 fps on lowest settings lol. But holy cow does star citizen look amazing. While I put this at #2, its only because my PC doesn't run the game at even 30 fps lol. Not the games fault obviously (though its alpha, so they haven't optimized things). And because of such low FPS, I can't enjoy how the game looks as much as in WoW. If its optimized and/or I buy a better CPU (because my GPU is really good, but my CPU is junk), there wouldn't be a game that exists that looks better, singleplayer or otherwise.

    3. Runescape. Just kidding lol, thats ugly as hell. And its newest version looks uglier somehow. I don't really have any other MMOs I like the look of to put in the top three. They all have issues or just meh, or at very least, tied for "third" because nothing pops out as looking amazing and next gen. I guess EVE for space games used to be in my top 3, but star citizen looks way better.

However. As a bonus 4th one (well kinda third I guess, but meh, not really). Not really my favorite. Black Desert Online. ONLY because of its character creator. I've made some really cool and pretty characters in BDO that I can only make similarily in a heavily modded Skyrim (though modded Skyrim allows vastly better customization). But I don't like the graphics enough to put in a top three...so I really only have two MMOs I like the look of. If any other MMO came out with a better character creator than BDO, I'd never even bother playing BDO lol. And BDO character creator isn't even that great to begin with. My modded skyrim has a better character editor than BDO lol.

All the other MMOs either aged horribly, or look like not my type. Nothing that pops out as amazing, unique or next gen.

GW2, Black Desert and FFXIV for me.

I don't believe realistic art style = better graphics. Two different things.

  • joeri123joeri123 Member UncommonPosts: 247
    1. FFIV, I loved how the game looks for the short time I played. Couldn't  get over the slow combat sadly :(
    2. GW2 art style of the worldscape. Characters not so much, they are ugly and the animations are meh.

Can't really put a third. I find ESO boring looking + bad animations.
BDO is /puke, pop-in textures make me nauseous.

    undisputed:

    1) ESO
    2) ArchAge
    3) Guild Wars 2

    1) BDO, the only MMO that does both characters AND enviroments to a very high standard.
    2) FF14. Encredibly strong art design brought to life beautifully animated. Too much loading screens and small areas are keeping it from the nr. 1 spot for me.
    3) ESO, best enviroments out of all but lacklustre characters and armour.

Honourable mention goes to Project Genom, it is shaping up to be VERY pretty.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

FFXIV because it is more than just environment.I can accept BDO as number 2.
After that there is nothing worth noting, all those games are doing things with graphics that i don't like, especially with lighting and fog effects.

Yes realistic is better than cartoony, the difference being is that it is still about the QUALITY,you can still have bad quality realistic graphics but imo cartoony is ALWAYS low end quality, simple reason is low res textures, often looking like 8-16 bit graphics. Then people often make excuses using terms like cute or holds better over time, well yeah lol crap will look crap forever,of course it holds better over time.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Not an easy task, for instance do many Korean games look great but have very little variation in armor and in some cases you more or less just look the same as everyone else with the same class and sex at your levelrange. Do that get points off? Same with variation of zones and mobs.

Also, certain games look good but therefor have really small worlds (like AoC, when it released it looked way better then any other MMO but the zones were really small and the framerate sucked).

Then you have art and aesthetics Vs polygon count...

So what are the factors we should judge?

    1. Guild Wars 2 : Best animations and environments I've ever seen in an mmo
    2. Black Desert : Character models and overall graphic quality are just amazing.
    3. Dofus : This game is 12 years old and had quite a few graphic revamps in the past but it is still looks like a piece of art.

Not sure if it counts but ARK:Survivel Evolved.   Yeah the developers make a lot of stupid decisions but the graphics are still silky with everything is on ultra.

Other than that no mmorpg really comes to mind, I find none of them to be really good looking even on max graphics.

Your right, Ark doesn't count, if we included games from PC gaming in general, then the list of best looking games would change dramatically.
