Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: Preview

DanaDana Member Posts: 2,415

The GDC Previews are not done yet. Today, we take a peek under the hood of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. April Jones, the new PR Queen at Sigil Games met with us at E3 and let us in on a few secrets.

image“Adventurers are going to need diplomats,” explained Jones, citing an example where a group finds a dungeon that is simply too well defended to enter by brute force.

This ties into a theme of interdependencies in Vanguard. It opens up a range of new ideas that require players to work together to achieve goals. Adventurers may find they need a diplomat to get into the dungeon, then a crafter to fully harvest the rewards at the bottom.

“[Non combat classes are] a lot more integrated with what players need and use than other games I’ve played,” said Jones.

a lot of PvPers are going to be unhappy if there are no PvP servers at launch.  personally, i think the game will better for it.

"If all you do is solo, then it may be best to look elsewhere."

kk. I soloed often in EQ and had a great time.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Niche product, no pvp, limited solo content, more or less forced grouping.
NO thanks i have had enough of that with DDO.

    Diplomats...good idea...

But how exactly are you going to make the diplomats useful and interesting in that raiding concept.  I hate the raiding myself, but I see this new diplomat thingy as problematic with raiding.  Are you going to need 3 diplomats to actually make diplomacy while you raid?

That is a...slippery road to say the least!  And since all the best rewards are in the raiding aspect of the game, you will have many diplomats wanting to acquire their stuff, which mean wanting to raid...

    *grin evilly*

Me I will go back to hack and slash some mobs in the meanwhile!  Later.

What exactly looks old mate? Can you elaborate a bit.

Better, can you actually tell us which game in developement looks like a breath of fresh air, compared to vanguard.

I don't know if you read all the features Vanguard has to offer.
Compared to previous MMOs not only it looks better than older games, but I can't see any future game with better concept of those offered by Vanguard.
The diplomacy sphere itself  it's something that no other game has even thought to implement, and will give a little bit more depth to the usual hack and slash system, where every advancement is dictated by how big your sword is rather than your IQ.

Whether those features will be implemented properly or not, it s something we will see in few months but the ideas are not old by any means.

This has been my #1 most anticipated mmorpg since I first started following it.  And I must say the more  I hear about the features, the more impressed I am.  Brad Mcquaid and Co. are truly at the head of the class with all their well thought out and innovative ideas.  It will be refreshing to have a great game come out that is not stuck on "easy" mode.

After playing Everquest for too, too long, I wasn't really looking forward to another offering from House McQuaid. The more I hear about it, the more it sounds like everything that sucked about EQ taken to the next level, I'll be passing on this one.

Hero's Journey, "mate". Nothing else comes even close.

Vanguard has a severe death penalty with corpse runs and does not use instancing. Fresh air straight from the 90's...

Sounds exciting but I am worried about "If you want to solo, find something else" line. I dont want EQ all over again

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

At least there is some chatter about the game.. It's been all dried up for a few weeks.  The more marketing people talk the sooner the games comes out.

Everything I've read from Sigil seems to be frank and honest, just reading the honesty in the game FAQ was enough to make me decided to at least try the game when it comes out.  The diplomat stuff sounds great.

Just sounds to me like you're spouting your opinion as fact.  I want a
severe death penalty and no instancing so it sounds to me like Sigl are
just giving us all the facts.  Move on.

*I DO think that Hero's Journey looks great, any game that says they will have roleplay servers gets a look from me.  I'm looking foward to both games for different reasons.

Ok, I am open to discussion, you might be right.

Can you please list those refreshing and amazing new ideas of  Hero Journey?
    I am curious mate.

Damn right! Thats what we need now.

The current model is broken (any time a game like WoW comes out where you can get to 60 in 2 weeks, the games are broken), We need to fix it by going back to the initial model, but still advancing on THAT. That is what Vanguard is doing, instead of trying to innovate off of thinks that are broken in the first place like instancing and no penalty, easy mode...

This game has peaked my interest for a long time now, it looks great, and has some refreshing game elements. This will appeal to an older audience, and all the better for it.

    Can't wait.

If they can pull off what they are promising this one will be awesome.  Solo content isn't non-existant.  They've said many times that they're aiming for 60% group content, 20% raid and 20% solo.  That's not forced grouping.  I've played DDO , and it is NOTHING like vangaurd.  Vangaurd has no instancing. Thus putting the MMO back into the genre.  This is not a game for pvp...they are talking about possible alternate rule set servers but they are an after thought.

All i can say is please go read the info on their site.  Imho this game is the only one on the horizon worth playing.

I am looking forward to playing Vanguard, the screen shots on the site look really good, and the mere fact they guys from the orginal EQ are on the Job, makes it that much more exciting to look forward to. :)

Agreed. Especialy about the "If you like to solo, go play elsewhere" part.

The ONE thing I hated the most of EQ is running around in circles, LFG. If I tried to make a group, usually took so long trying to fill the "Holy Trinity" necessary for a decent group that the players I already invited start leaving and the group breaks up and I log out frustrated to all heck.

No thanks, not again thank you.

If you like to solo, go play WoW for 59 levels. Better yet, play Oblivion, it's 100% solo and a great game! We who like to group and co-operate will miss you, but we'll get by.

Guys, don't listen to Brad or Anarchy...

Be happy, Bioware will rip the MMO market.  Marks my words, 80% NA players will play in the MMO Bioware is currently making by 2009!

Big company are sticking to enforcing mistakes.  Bioware won't (or I quit MMO style completely if they corrupt that company as they corrupt a D&D product with the DDO name).  You have just no idea how strongly it will wipe the market.

    Don't care for tiny enforcers...

    Bioware for president!

I just apply the logic 1 step further...if you want to group, find something else.

    I will.

100% of the end game resolve around raiding...I have no time to waste.
